ACE Centre fundraising help
1. The ACE Centre Advisory Trust Providing assistive / augmented communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) solutions to severely disabled people since 1984
The ACE Centre Advisory Trust was established in 1984 and is based in Headington (in the grounds of the Nuffield Orthopeadic Centre)
The ACE Centre works with children who have little or no communication due to conditions such as cerebral palsy, head injury, autism, stroke. They provide assessments for children with complex disabilities who require assisted/augmented communication aids in order to communicate and to learn. (Think Stephen Hawking talking computer!) In simpler terms they “assess children’s capabilities in conjunction with their disabilities; what can they do? how much can they move?, what is their cognitive age? etc” For each assessment they provide an occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, special educational needs teacher and assistive communication technologist. This initial assessment takes a whole day and their staff work together with the child, their parents / carers, teachers and therapists to fully understand each individual childs needs before prescribing a communication aid/s which would provide a bridge for the child to begin communicating. Following assessment the centre ‘loans’ the child a communication aid/s to trial at home, school, socially etc to see how well it fits with their lifestyle and needs (this loan is typically for 3-6 months while the local education authority or primary care trust arranges permanent provision, however should the child need the loan equipment for a longer period we are happy to extend the loan). Children are re-assessed periodically, usually at ‘transition points’ such as the move from primary to secondary school, secondary school to university, as their condition worsens or improves or as their needs change – what teenager doesn’t want a mobile phone!. Its not just about communication, for children who have never been able to play, these communication aids can also link to games and toys allowing them to have fun, use mobile phones, access the internet and even turn on the tv! They also provide training on the use of AAC / AT equipment, as well as providing an information, support and advice service to parents, carers, teachers, therapists etc.
