I am an applied developmental psychologist. My program of research focuses on immigrant adolescent social development (e.g., ethnic identity development, self-esteem, acculturation), academic achievement, Hispanic education, and child and adolescent well-being.I have studied how cultural brokering, family obligation, acculturation, biculturalism and ethnic identity are related to academic engagement among immigrant adolescents. A second line of work examines how physical characteristics like skin color and physiognomy are associated with the acculturation patterns of immigrant youth.
