3. Summary of ideas for Rhythm and
Beat
The chosen genre for both of my magazine is Hip Hop this is because it
appeals to a wide amount of of the audience that read music magazines.
I have chosen the colors red white and black for Rhythm and for Beat I have
chosen white, yellow and grey. This is because they are interesting colors
when incorporated on a page. The white symbolizes pureness and the red is a
bright up beat color. The black is a contrast to equal out the bright and the
dark on the page.
The target audience for my magazines is 15-20 year olds. This is because
statistics prove that that age range like hip hop more than other age ranges.
The price of the magazine will be placed at 99p this is an affordable price for
the majority of people that read the magazines.
The magazine will be a4 size. This makes it easier to take to other places
because it can be put in a bag easily.

For the color scheme I am going to be
using bright colors this is because they are
a connotations for hip hop which is a
happy upbeat genre.
The three main colors that I will
be using are red and white.
This is because those colors are
joyful welcoming colors.
The target audience will be
15-20 year olds. This is
because hip hop is more of
a grown up music genre
because of explicit language
in some songs.
The content that is going to be implicated
into the magazine needs to be age
appropriate and appeal to the correct
target audience.
The masthead

interesting
colors and a
well chosen
font that best
suits the name
of the
magazine. This
will make it
easier for
people to

magazine
when they see

The images that I
will use will only
be images that

audiences
attention and
intrigue them
into reading the
magazine.
The images being used in the
magazine will be age appropriate
for the target audience so the
reader wont be put off reading
the magazine.
The magazine will be released once a month. This is so the magazine contains
a lot of information that has happened in the previous month.
On every page there will be brand
identity, this means that there will be
logos in the top right of the page. It
will be in bright colors. This is so the

7. I have chosen this font style because it is easy to read and it is
easy to remember. This is good because then when people see it
in the shops they can recognise it easily.
The reason why I have chosen this font style is because it is bold
and stands out. It is good to have this feature on a title page
because people will find it easier to see the magazine amongst
other magazines on a shelf.

10. Mood board conclusions
The reasons why I have chosen
this collection of photographs
as a conclusion is because they
include the artists life style and
what they own for their car.
This makes people more
interested when they see it
because it might be something
that the reader did not know
about the artist in specific. I
have also included images of
the individual artist because of
their posture and what they are
wearing.
11. Rough sketches- FRONT COVER OF MAGAZINE
The Masthead is advertising
the Brand of the magazine,
located at the top of the page
to draw the audience’s eye,
bright and simple consisting
of a few letter.
Cover Lines covering more of
the content within the
magazine and offer more
information from across the
whole genre. These will cover
all aspects of the magazines
genre to ‘Inform and Educate’
(Katz) the audience on the
whole genre, enticing them to
purchase and read on.
It is essential to have a Barcode
visible on the front cover, this
includes the price the magazine,
the issue number, and social
media connections. I have
located the barcode at the
bottom of the page to not
distract from main cover and to
be easily scanned for the
company’s selling the product.
Main Headline introducing the
star on the main image and the
double page spread that is inside.
Enticing the reader to purchase
the magazine to read on,
persuasive pull quote taken from
the interview captures their
attention and creates continuity
throughout the magazine.
A Puff Promotion is encouraging
reader participation as they will
have to enter the competition.
Also, offers their audience
something for free if they win
which is related to the genre of
the magazine encouraging
purchases as the reader will want
to own the prize.
Strapline is always placed
below the masthead, catchy
slogan unique to the brand and
remember able by readers.
Social Media icons included in the barcode to
promote technical convergence but also
promote the brand’s franchise and encourage
audience participation
Main Image will cover the
background and layered under all
verbal codes. This is first glimpse
of artist within so has to be bold
and mysterious.
12. The centrality of the Main Image is because it
grasps the attention of the reader. It must relate to
the text and will be a mid shot or long shot,
differing the image from the front cover.
The Headline is bold at the top of the page, this is advertising
the main story or artist. This introduced the content of the page
and ties the image and text creating clear strong anchorage of all
the information.
I have added the Logo
on this side of the page
so that it increases the
advertisement of the
magazine company
reinforcing the brand
identity and continuity.
Interview - This
interview will be
introducing the artist,
outlining what
upcoming events they
have, how the joined
the music industry
and their music. This
format allows the
reader to personally
connect with the
subject and give gain
direct knowledge
about the subject.
There will be a Pull Quote
in the middle of the text
taken from the interview.
To enticed the reader to
There is an Addition
Section the bottom of
the page for other
photos to do with the
main Image. This
gives the reader a
variety of images of
the artist and add
more content behind
the genre of music.
Rough sketches- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Drop Capital will be
at the beginning of
the interview to tell
the reader where to
begin from. Will be
the first letter of the
interview this will
also be in the
masthead font to
create continuity.
Social Media beneath the interview to encourage
reader to use the other media platforms of the
magazine to gain further knowledge. Also, a
sentence encouraging reader to view whole
interview on a Facebook and website page.
Page Numbers on
both sides of the
double page spread
along the spine side by
side will allow readers
easier access to the
information.
13. Finalsketches
These are the final sketch layouts that I have chosen as a base for the magazine Front Cover and Double Page Spread. This is due to
the spaced layout therefore easy accessible to read. It also is a simple design, based from other popular magazines of this genre
and therefore is appealing to the reader visually. It includes all the conventions of a music magazine and will be focused on the
content within the pages which is what the reader wants to be ‘informed and educated’ (Katz) and ‘Personally identify’ (Katz) with
the information.
As denoted in the final sketch of the front cover I would have the masthead at the top of the page for clear visibility and the main
image as the background in the center of the page to make sure the audience know who is being featured, similarly the same
reason my headline is centrally positioned. I would use puff promotions and social media to expand the consumer ship. The
additional cover lines of related content will be to the left side of the page over laying the main image to highlight the variety of
content within.
The double page
spread as denoted by
the final sketch will
include the masthead
to create continuity
and brand
identification. The
usual conventions of a
double page spread
such as drop capitals
and pull quotes will
also be included to
entice the readers in
and the text and
image will be separate
to make the page
appealing as other
magazines format is
similar.

21. Form and Style
The form and the style of the magazine has to be professional and age appropriate
for the target audience. The Masthead and other bold titles will be in a bright color
so it helps with the recognition of the company. The masthead will be in a bold font
that is easily recognizable to the reader if they see it again in a shop.
Furthermore The main image will also overlap the masthead so the reader is aware
that the person in the picture is the main subject in the specific article of the
magazine. Throughout the magazine I will have product placement on the pages, in
places that the reader will see easily, this increases the advertisement and
recognition of the company.
Furthermore I will use interesting images that will incise the reader into reading the
magazine, I will also use interesting cover lines with well known artists so people will
want to read more about it. The colors that I will be using for Rythmn is red, grey
and black and for Beat I will be using yellow and black.
Rhythm BEAT
22. Target audience
Katz’ theory: according to Katz my magazine will ‘inform and educate’ the audience. This is through using interesting language and images in
order to attract the audience into reading the text. For example within the magazine it consists of interviews with famous people that are well
known, the use of well known celebrities attracts more people that are interested in the specific celebrity. Furthermore if my magazine use
well known people then people will enjoy reading the article more, this is how the magazine is able to inform and educate the audience. The
use of interesting images creates a diversion for the audience because it is enabling them to sit and read an interesting magazine and escape
reality for the duration of reading the magazine.
Hartley’s: Hartley's theory highlights that my magazine should consider Age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nation and family.
They should make sure that the magazine getting published is age appropriate to younger people whop read the magazine, this
means no sign of gore or sexual images. It is also very important that they consider different races before publishing the magazine
this is because there might be some controversial language used that might offend certain people because of their race or
ethnicity. Another thing that it says s gender and self image. These are really important because there might be contexts that
could make people feel they are lower than other people because they are a male or female. Also people might look at their self
differently after looking at a model in an image
Maslow: Maslow's theory mentions 4 different potential outcomes for a reader after reading a magazine these are; social
climbers, care givers, explorers and survivors. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in society.
This is important because it gives the audience confidence and a drive to do well in life. Caregivers is when the audience
sympathies with the characters situation. This is important because it gives the audience a chance to escape reality and be
engrossed into a magazine. Survivors is when the audience members want security and routine. This is important because they
have security knowing that the magazine will be published on a set date.
Sources: http://documents.mx/education/katz-hartley-and-maslow-theory.html
The target audience for my magazine is 15-20 year olds. This is because statistics prove that that age range like
hip hop more than other age ranges, this is therefore a larger audience.
The reason why I have chosen a larger audience is because the magazine will get more sales if they enjoy
reading the magazine. Furthermore it will increase the development of the brand and increase recognition
when people see it on the shelves at a store.
23. What will I repeat?
(Steve Neale – 1980)
front cover
• I will be repeating the bright to dark colors in
the masthead because it is different and more
interesting then a solid color.
• I will also be repeat the use of overlapping the
masthead with the main image, the image will
also be a mid shot which just includes the top
half of the person in the image.
• The way the side headings are laid out also
looks good so I will be repeating some of the
techniques the magazine ‘VIBE’ have used to
highlight the other stories.
24. The main image is something that I will repeat, I want it
to be a whole body picture with an outfit that suits the
genre of music that my magazine covers.
I will also have product placement on my magazine double
page spread that promotes the company this will be located
on the top left of the magazine so people can see it clearly
when they see the main image
I will have the social media links for the website located
at the bottom of the screen so people know where to find
the magazine on social medias like Facebook, Twitter or
Instagram
What will I repeat?
(Steve Neale – 1980)
double page spread
25. Magazine of Inspiration
Main image: the main
image is a mid shot of
Eminem. A mid shot is
when you can just see the
top half of the subject and
nothing else. the subject
(Eminem) is a well known
artist and will catch the
readers attention because
they will recognize his face.
A mid shot of the artists
reveals a sense of authority
in the magazine. This is also
conveyed in the masthead
this is because Eminem is
overlapping the masthead
which denotes that he is an
important person.
Masthead: the mast head is in two different colors and they are faded into one another. This makes the
the Masthead look more interesting and attracts the readers attention. The masthead is also in a very
bold font which stands out to the reader.
Cover lines: the
reason for side
headings is to give
the reader an idea if
what is in the specific
magazine article.
Main headline: the
reason for using a
pull quote on the
front cover of a
magazine is to
intrigue the reader
into reading the
magazine.
Coverline: Addressing
the reader this is
used to entice the
reader into reading
the article to find out
the answer.
26. Double page spread of Inspiration
Main image: a long shot camera angle of Bruno mars the reason for a long
shot is to help set the scene and reveal what is around the artist, this
therefore draws the attention from the artist to to other objects in the shot.
Brand identity:
the use of the
letter V is brand
identity for the
company VIBE.
The reason why
they do this on
every page in the
magazine is
because it
increases
advertisement of
the magazine and
helps with the
recognition of the
company.
Title: The use of this
Interesting title is
used to pull the
reader into reading
the extract . The
reason why it pulls
people in is because it
is using play on words.
Furthermore it is in
bold and large font
which catches the
readers attention.
Bold headings: bold headings are used to highlight to
the reader where another paragraph starts and what it is
about.
What I will repeat.
For my magazine I will be repeating the large image on the right hand side of the double page spread. It will be a long shot and have the
subject with another object. The reason why I will be doing this is because it makes the page look a lot more interesting and more
welcoming to read the extract. I will also be using play on words in the title and making it big and bold. This is because it catches the readers
attention and will intrigue them into reading the extract. Brand identity will also be used on the page like the VIBE magazine. This is because
it will give the magazine a professional look and will increase the advertisement of the magazine.
Drop capital: shows
reader where to
start reading and is
it the same font as
the masthead
creating continuity.
27. Conclusion
I have generated ideas for two magazines named Rhythm and
Beat. I have created hand drawn drafts and graphic layouts in
order to covey how I was going to layout the magazine front
cover and the double page spread. It also highlighted how the
rest of the magazine would look like if I did every single page. In
addition I have included final ideas for the color schemes for the
individual magazines and I have also highlighted the costa and
other implications in the magazines like the masthead style, font,
images and target audience.
