What is Happening Here?
•The president, he has signed executive orders
that
•Restrict entry of immigrants from seven
countries into the U.S.
•Authorize the construction of a wall along the
U.S. border with Mexico.
•Signed an order to prioritize the removal of
“criminal aliens” and withhold federal funding
from “sanctuary cities.”
What is an executive order?
• An executive order is an official statement from the
president which tells government agencies how to use
their resources.
• In the case of “Muslim Ban” the order bars citizens of
seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for
a period of 90 days.
• It suspends the United States' refugee system for a period
of 120 days.
• Trump says his "extreme vetting" system will help "keep
radical Islamic terrorists out of the US".
•
Is the executive order legally binding?
• Executive orders are legally binding and are recorded in the
Federal Register, a daily record of all federal regulations,
proposals, and public notices.
• But they can be subjected to a legal review according to the
New York Times, the "Muslim ban" order is illegal.
• The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 banned all
discrimination against immigrants on the basis of national
origin.
• Trump's travel ban is a violation of that act.
Issues
• None of the terrorist incidents suffered by the U.S. in recent
times, including the horrible Sept. 11 attacks
• Were perpetuated by citizens from the seven designated
countries.
• The ban could have other harmful consequences.
• It applies to people who fought alongside American troops in
dangerous situations
• Who acted heroically, saving our men and women in
uniform.
How does it affect refugees?
• The ban completely suspends the United States' Syrian
refugee program, which accepted 12,486 Syrians in 2016.
• Gives preference to accepting Christian refugees from the
Middle East over Muslim refugees.
• Reduces cap on the total number of refugees allowed to
enter the US in 2017 from 110,000 to just 50,000.
Who does it affect?
• The order refers to a statute which applies to seven Muslim-
majority nations.
• Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Iraq, with dual
nationals included in the ban.
• There have been reports of legal US residents, known as green card
holders, being turned away from US-bound flights.
• Green cards are not mentioned explicitly in the executive order.
• Oddly, the ban does not apply to the nationalities of those who
carried out the 9/11 attacks:
• Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.
Who does it affect?
• Approximately thirteen percent
• of the world’s Muslims, or 199.4 million
• out of up to 1.6 billion,
• live in those seven countries
Pew Research Report (2015 )“The Future of World
Religions: Population Growth Projections, 2010-2050.”
Applied
• These people have already been
vetted
• They have visas
• They have Green Cards
• Punishing People that have
followed the rules
• Families are being separated
What the Ban Did
• Suspended the entire US refugee admissions system
• for 120 days
• even though it was already one of the most rigorous vetting
• regimens in the world,
• taking 18 to 24 months and requiring interviews and background
checks through multiple federal agencies.
• Trump has said he wants more strictures
What is Happening?
• Suspended the Syrian refugee program indefinitely.
• The US accepted 12,486 Syrian refugees in 2016, compared
with about 300,000 received by Germany the same year.
• Since the Syrian civil war began, Turkey has received about 2.7 million
refugees,
• Lebanon 1 million refugees
• Jordan 650,000, according to UN estimates.
Banned
• From Entry seven majority-Muslim countries
• Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – for 90 days.
• After perhaps the vaguest of Trump’s orders, there was much confusion
in the first 36 hours over whether legal US residents would be allowed to
enter the US.
• They were initially denied entry, but on Sunday night, the Department
of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that some “legal permanent
residents” who pose no “serious threat” to the US would be allowed in
on a case-by-case basis.
• It is unclear whether this would extend to those in possession of work or
student visas.
• The order would let the Department of Homeland Security ban more
countries at any time
What happens next?
• Opponents of the "extreme vetting" order say they will
launch a legal challenge on two fronts.
• They are expected to argue that the blanket ban violates
the FIFTH Amendment right to due process.
• They will argue that the order's preferential treatment of
Christians over Muslims violates the FIRST Amendment
on Freedom of Religion.
Crime and Immigration
• Research has shown that increases in immigration are NOT
associated with increases in crime.
• Immigration-crime research over the past 20 years that
found no backing for the immigration-crime connection.
• The literature demonstrates that immigrants commit fewer
crimes, on average, than native-born Americans.
• Large cities with substantial immigrant populations
have lower crime rates, on average, than those with minimal
immigrant populations.
Hating Immigrants Leads to Increase in Hate
Crimes: February 28th Speech
• A 2016 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology actually
suggests that communities that recorded significant increases in
immigration had a sharper reduction in crime compared to areas that had
less immigration.
• The Cato Institute, a DC Research Institute, called the president’s research
on immigrants and crime "fairly one-sided," noting that "with few
exceptions, immigrants are less crime prone than natives or have no effect
on crime rates."

Since Election
• University campuses are places where men and women of all races
and religions should be able to exchange ideas and learn from one
another.
• Police are looking into multiple assaults on Muslim women taken
place on university campuses
• Muslim student at San Diego State University was robbed by two
men: Backpack, purse and car stolen
• Men beat Muslim woman
• University of Louisiana, Lafayette with
• "metal object," and tore off her hijab
Mem Fox, 70, Australian author wrongfully
detained at LA airport
• I was pulled out of line in the immigration
line at Los Angeles airport as I came into
the US. Not because I was Mem Fox the
writer – nobody knew that – I was just a
normal person like anybody else. They
thought I was working in the States and
that I had come in on the wrong visa.
• I was coming to deliver an opening
speech at a literacy conference, and
because my expenses were being paid,
they said: “You need to answer further
questions.” So I was taken into this
holding room with about 20 other
people and kept there for an hour and 40
minutes, and for 15 minutes I was
interrogated.
Mem Fox Children’s Book Author
• En route to a conference, where she was to deliver the opening
address at a literacy conference, Fox was ushered into an airport
holding room and told she was travelling on the wrong visa.
• This was incorrect and the US Embassy in Canberra has apologized.
Fox, 70, said that by the time she checked in to her hotel she was
shaking and sobbing.
• “I am old and white, innocent and educated, and I speak English
fluently,” she said. “Imagine what happened to the others in the
room, including an old Iranian woman in her 80s, in a wheelchair.
• “The way I was treated would have made any decent American
shocked to the core, because that’s not America as a whole, it really
isn’t. It’s just that people have been given permission to let rip in a
fashion that is alarming.”
Muhammad Ali's son detained at Ft. Lauderdale airport because he's Muslim
• The son of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali was
detained by immigration officials at Ft.
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
because he's a Muslim.
• Muhammad Ali Jr., along with his mother, Khalilah
Camacho-Ali were returning to Florida from
Jamaica after speaking at a black history event.
Both had valid US Passports.
• Chris Mancini, the attorney for the Ali family said
the incident stemmed from President Donald
Trump's executive order calling for a temporary
travel ban on foreign nationals entering the
country from seven Muslim-majority countries in
the Middle East and Africa.
• "He asked me, 'what is your name?' " Ali Jr.
"Which I didn't think nothing of that."
The 44-year-old American citizen, born in Philadelphia added
that the official asked for the origins of his name. He said, my
father and mother named me.
"He said, 'OK, now, what is your religion?' " Ali Jr. said. "And I
said, 'Muslim, I'm a Muslim.' And I thought to myself, that's
kind of odd. He asked about my religion, and I'm traveling back
into the country from where I came from?"
Ali Jr. said the immigration official questioned him in separate
room from his mother
Donald Trump announces new immigrant crime agency - and
pledges to publish lists of crimes by 'aliens’ The President
claimed that murders were being kept quiet by 'special
interests'
• "I have ordered the Department of Homeland Security to create an
office to serve American victims," he said in the speech.
• "The office is called VOICE — Victims Of Immigration Crime
Engagement. We are providing a voice to those who have been
ignored by our media, and silenced by special interests."
• The Department of Homeland Security clarified that VOICE will
come under the auspices of ICE, and that ICE will publish the list of
crimes committed by immigrants
With VOICE Agency, Trump Continues 'Nativist Demonization' of
Immigrants: New government agency blasted as 'a blatant attempt
to humiliate and scare immigrants'
• "I am establishing the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement
(VOICE) Office within the Office of the Director of ICE, which will
create a programmatic liaison between ICE and the known victims of
crimes committed by removable aliens"
• "To that end, I direct the Director of ICE to immediately reallocate any
and all resources that are currently used to advocate on behalf of
illegal aliens to the new VOICE Office, and to immediately terminate
the provision of such outreach or advocacy services to illegal aliens."
• An executive order from Trump, signed in late January,
also instructed DHS to "make public a comprehensive list of criminal
actions committed by aliens."
U.S. Muslim Vets Vow To Defend Jewish
Centers Under Siege
• The hate crimes, which exploded following the rhetoric of the
president, have had the unexpected outcome of uniting American
Jews and Muslims.
• Muslim veterans are offering to protect the sites any time, anywhere
• A Muslim activist helped raise over $135,000 to repair a Jewish
cemetery in a St. Louis suburb. Tarek El-Messidi said funds will now
be used to help Philadelphia’s Mount Carmel Cemetery, which was
vandalized recently.
• “We must stand together against these acts of racism, anti-Semitism,
and Islamophobia,” El-Messidi said.
No one Wants to be a Refugee
• The United States has a humanitarian obligation to assist refugees
displaced by war.
• Not Charity, Basic Human Rights
• Every Minute, 24 people are displaced.
What is Happening now?
• Ann Donnelly, federal judge, NY blocked action against deportations
based on the order because the government could not guarantee the
foreigners would be safe from irreparable harm if deported.
• AG Sally Yates Fired
• WH Press Secretary Sean Spicer: “Either get with the program or they can
go.”
• Some faculty members are calling for a boycott of academic conferences
in the United States in reaction to an executive order, signed on Friday by
President Trump.
• Undermined: whistleblower protections for federal employees
What can Happen Now?
• President Trump's Department of Justice has several options to
challenge Thursday's ruling by a federal appeals court, which refused to reinstate
the temporary travel ban targeting seven majority-Muslim countries.
• 1. Go the Supreme Court, that would be difficult, 4-4 Tie?
• 2. Go to Appeals Court, 3 Judge Panel:
• This could be difficult, because the San Francisco court is the most liberal in the
country. 18 of the judges were appointed by Democratic presidents compared to
seven appointed by Republicans.
• 3. Go back to Washington State, Judge James Robart:
• The ruling from the 9th Circuit only deals with the temporary restraining order
issued by District Judge James Robart on Feb. 3.
• 4. Go Write a New Executive Order
Sense of Upheaval – DHS and Ethical Code
• State Dept Memo: A dissent memo complied by several officers in
• State Department, which blasts the Trump administration for endorsing a
policy
• “which closes our doors to over 200 million legitimate travelers”
• and “runs counter to core American values of nondiscrimination, fair play, and
extending a warm welcome to foreign visitors and immigrants.”
• “We are better than this ban,” the memo adds. 900 Signed it.
• Ethics: Government workers must put loyalty to the LAW and the COUNTRY
• ‘above loyalty to persons, party, or Government Department’.
This is the time for true leadership.
Should CEOs Speak Out on What Is Right and Wrong?
America is a society at war with itself.
• What Should Leaders Do?
• First, forget “sides” and go to first principles: every great company has
a clear sense of societal purpose and guiding values.
• Have conversations about the actions that the people want to take
• Be encouraging to people to shape what kind of society they want,
directly.
Schools Protect Immigrant Children
• Chicago Schools Say Immigration Officials Can't Enter Buildings
Without Warrants & Offer Parents Safety Tips
• The new guidelines came from Chicago Public Schools Chief Education
Officer Janice Jackson, who told principals to deny federal
immigration authorities access to their buildings without a criminal
warrant.
Witnessing Islamophobic Harassment?
Action Steps to Take
• 1. Engage Conversation
• Go to them, sit beside them
and say hello
• Ignore the Attacker
• 2. Pick a Random subject and
start discussing it
• The Weather, a movie, etc.
• 3. Keep Building Safe Space.
• Keep eye contact with them
and do not acknowledge the
attacker’s presence
• The absence of response from
you two will push them to
leave the area shortly
• 4. Continue the conversation
until the attacker leaves
• And escort them to a SAFE
place if necessary.
Keep Your Eyes Wide Open
• The corporation that deports immigrants has a major stake in Trump’s presidency,
“There’s a lot of money to be made.”
• If Trump’s plan to deport 2 or 3 million more immigrants comes to pass, ICE will
almost certainly turn to private industry.
• CSI Aviation, Trump has stake in this company, has received more than $300
million dollars in contracts to provide the Department of Homeland Security with
air passenger service.
• In fact, nearly every step of the detention and deportation process has become an
opportunity for private businesses to cash in. The detention facilities are not only
operated by companies, but the services inside them — healthcare, food, phone
systems — are contracted out to specialized firms.
• ICE has relied on private flights to deport immigrants for migrants from Central
America. ICE Air has contracted with commercial airlines and charter flight
companies operating out of four U.S. airport hubs to take people either back to
their country of origin or to another detention center within the United States.

yourself
•Don’t Just Stand By
•We the People, Are Greater than Fear.

Immigration Ban 101

  • 1. Executive Order Impact Issued: January 27, 2017 Wafa Hozien, Ph.D. Educational Leadership Central Michigan University Hozie1w@cmich.edu Thursday, March 2, 2107 Note: Special thanks to Cara Evangelista, research assistant.
  • 2. What is Happening Here? •The president, he has signed executive orders that •Restrict entry of immigrants from seven countries into the U.S. •Authorize the construction of a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. •Signed an order to prioritize the removal of “criminal aliens” and withhold federal funding from “sanctuary cities.”
  • 3. What is an executive order? • An executive order is an official statement from the president which tells government agencies how to use their resources. • In the case of “Muslim Ban” the order bars citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for a period of 90 days. • It suspends the United States' refugee system for a period of 120 days. • Trump says his "extreme vetting" system will help "keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the US". •
  • 4. Is the executive order legally binding? • Executive orders are legally binding and are recorded in the Federal Register, a daily record of all federal regulations, proposals, and public notices. • But they can be subjected to a legal review according to the New York Times, the "Muslim ban" order is illegal. • The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 banned all discrimination against immigrants on the basis of national origin. • Trump's travel ban is a violation of that act.
  • 5. Issues • None of the terrorist incidents suffered by the U.S. in recent times, including the horrible Sept. 11 attacks • Were perpetuated by citizens from the seven designated countries. • The ban could have other harmful consequences. • It applies to people who fought alongside American troops in dangerous situations • Who acted heroically, saving our men and women in uniform.
  • 6. How does it affect refugees? • The ban completely suspends the United States' Syrian refugee program, which accepted 12,486 Syrians in 2016. • Gives preference to accepting Christian refugees from the Middle East over Muslim refugees. • Reduces cap on the total number of refugees allowed to enter the US in 2017 from 110,000 to just 50,000.
  • 7. Who does it affect? • The order refers to a statute which applies to seven Muslim- majority nations. • Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Iraq, with dual nationals included in the ban. • There have been reports of legal US residents, known as green card holders, being turned away from US-bound flights. • Green cards are not mentioned explicitly in the executive order. • Oddly, the ban does not apply to the nationalities of those who carried out the 9/11 attacks: • Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.
  • 8. Who does it affect? • Approximately thirteen percent • of the world’s Muslims, or 199.4 million • out of up to 1.6 billion, • live in those seven countries Pew Research Report (2015 )“The Future of World Religions: Population Growth Projections, 2010-2050.”
  • 9.
  • 10. Applied • These people have already been vetted • They have visas • They have Green Cards • Punishing People that have followed the rules • Families are being separated
  • 11. What the Ban Did • Suspended the entire US refugee admissions system • for 120 days • even though it was already one of the most rigorous vetting • regimens in the world, • taking 18 to 24 months and requiring interviews and background checks through multiple federal agencies. • Trump has said he wants more strictures
  • 12. What is Happening? • Suspended the Syrian refugee program indefinitely. • The US accepted 12,486 Syrian refugees in 2016, compared with about 300,000 received by Germany the same year. • Since the Syrian civil war began, Turkey has received about 2.7 million refugees, • Lebanon 1 million refugees • Jordan 650,000, according to UN estimates.
  • 13. Banned • From Entry seven majority-Muslim countries • Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – for 90 days. • After perhaps the vaguest of Trump’s orders, there was much confusion in the first 36 hours over whether legal US residents would be allowed to enter the US. • They were initially denied entry, but on Sunday night, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that some “legal permanent residents” who pose no “serious threat” to the US would be allowed in on a case-by-case basis. • It is unclear whether this would extend to those in possession of work or student visas. • The order would let the Department of Homeland Security ban more countries at any time
  • 14. What happens next? • Opponents of the "extreme vetting" order say they will launch a legal challenge on two fronts. • They are expected to argue that the blanket ban violates the FIFTH Amendment right to due process. • They will argue that the order's preferential treatment of Christians over Muslims violates the FIRST Amendment on Freedom of Religion.
  • 15. Crime and Immigration • Research has shown that increases in immigration are NOT associated with increases in crime. • Immigration-crime research over the past 20 years that found no backing for the immigration-crime connection. • The literature demonstrates that immigrants commit fewer crimes, on average, than native-born Americans. • Large cities with substantial immigrant populations have lower crime rates, on average, than those with minimal immigrant populations.
  • 16. Hating Immigrants Leads to Increase in Hate Crimes: February 28th Speech • A 2016 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology actually suggests that communities that recorded significant increases in immigration had a sharper reduction in crime compared to areas that had less immigration. • The Cato Institute, a DC Research Institute, called the president’s research on immigrants and crime "fairly one-sided," noting that "with few exceptions, immigrants are less crime prone than natives or have no effect on crime rates." • Ferraro, Vincent. (March 2016). Immigration and Crime in the New Destinations, 2000–2007: A Test of the Disorganizing Effect of Migration. Journal of Quantitative Criminology • https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10940-015-9252-y
  • 17. Since Election • University campuses are places where men and women of all races and religions should be able to exchange ideas and learn from one another. • Police are looking into multiple assaults on Muslim women taken place on university campuses • Muslim student at San Diego State University was robbed by two men: Backpack, purse and car stolen • Men beat Muslim woman • University of Louisiana, Lafayette with • "metal object," and tore off her hijab
  • 18. Mem Fox, 70, Australian author wrongfully detained at LA airport • I was pulled out of line in the immigration line at Los Angeles airport as I came into the US. Not because I was Mem Fox the writer – nobody knew that – I was just a normal person like anybody else. They thought I was working in the States and that I had come in on the wrong visa. • I was coming to deliver an opening speech at a literacy conference, and because my expenses were being paid, they said: “You need to answer further questions.” So I was taken into this holding room with about 20 other people and kept there for an hour and 40 minutes, and for 15 minutes I was interrogated.
  • 19. Mem Fox Children’s Book Author • En route to a conference, where she was to deliver the opening address at a literacy conference, Fox was ushered into an airport holding room and told she was travelling on the wrong visa. • This was incorrect and the US Embassy in Canberra has apologized. Fox, 70, said that by the time she checked in to her hotel she was shaking and sobbing. • “I am old and white, innocent and educated, and I speak English fluently,” she said. “Imagine what happened to the others in the room, including an old Iranian woman in her 80s, in a wheelchair. • “The way I was treated would have made any decent American shocked to the core, because that’s not America as a whole, it really isn’t. It’s just that people have been given permission to let rip in a fashion that is alarming.”
  • 20. Muhammad Ali's son detained at Ft. Lauderdale airport because he's Muslim • The son of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali was detained by immigration officials at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport because he's a Muslim. • Muhammad Ali Jr., along with his mother, Khalilah Camacho-Ali were returning to Florida from Jamaica after speaking at a black history event. Both had valid US Passports. • Chris Mancini, the attorney for the Ali family said the incident stemmed from President Donald Trump's executive order calling for a temporary travel ban on foreign nationals entering the country from seven Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East and Africa. • "He asked me, 'what is your name?' " Ali Jr. "Which I didn't think nothing of that." The 44-year-old American citizen, born in Philadelphia added that the official asked for the origins of his name. He said, my father and mother named me. "He said, 'OK, now, what is your religion?' " Ali Jr. said. "And I said, 'Muslim, I'm a Muslim.' And I thought to myself, that's kind of odd. He asked about my religion, and I'm traveling back into the country from where I came from?" Ali Jr. said the immigration official questioned him in separate room from his mother
  • 21. Donald Trump announces new immigrant crime agency - and pledges to publish lists of crimes by 'aliens’ The President claimed that murders were being kept quiet by 'special interests' • "I have ordered the Department of Homeland Security to create an office to serve American victims," he said in the speech. • "The office is called VOICE — Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement. We are providing a voice to those who have been ignored by our media, and silenced by special interests." • The Department of Homeland Security clarified that VOICE will come under the auspices of ICE, and that ICE will publish the list of crimes committed by immigrants
  • 22. With VOICE Agency, Trump Continues 'Nativist Demonization' of Immigrants: New government agency blasted as 'a blatant attempt to humiliate and scare immigrants' • "I am establishing the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office within the Office of the Director of ICE, which will create a programmatic liaison between ICE and the known victims of crimes committed by removable aliens" • "To that end, I direct the Director of ICE to immediately reallocate any and all resources that are currently used to advocate on behalf of illegal aliens to the new VOICE Office, and to immediately terminate the provision of such outreach or advocacy services to illegal aliens." • An executive order from Trump, signed in late January, also instructed DHS to "make public a comprehensive list of criminal actions committed by aliens."
  • 23. U.S. Muslim Vets Vow To Defend Jewish Centers Under Siege • The hate crimes, which exploded following the rhetoric of the president, have had the unexpected outcome of uniting American Jews and Muslims. • Muslim veterans are offering to protect the sites any time, anywhere • A Muslim activist helped raise over $135,000 to repair a Jewish cemetery in a St. Louis suburb. Tarek El-Messidi said funds will now be used to help Philadelphia’s Mount Carmel Cemetery, which was vandalized recently. • “We must stand together against these acts of racism, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia,” El-Messidi said.
  • 24.
  • 25. No one Wants to be a Refugee • The United States has a humanitarian obligation to assist refugees displaced by war. • Not Charity, Basic Human Rights • Every Minute, 24 people are displaced.
  • 26. What is Happening now? • Ann Donnelly, federal judge, NY blocked action against deportations based on the order because the government could not guarantee the foreigners would be safe from irreparable harm if deported. • AG Sally Yates Fired • WH Press Secretary Sean Spicer: “Either get with the program or they can go.” • Some faculty members are calling for a boycott of academic conferences in the United States in reaction to an executive order, signed on Friday by President Trump. • Undermined: whistleblower protections for federal employees
  • 27. What can Happen Now? • President Trump's Department of Justice has several options to challenge Thursday's ruling by a federal appeals court, which refused to reinstate the temporary travel ban targeting seven majority-Muslim countries. • 1. Go the Supreme Court, that would be difficult, 4-4 Tie? • 2. Go to Appeals Court, 3 Judge Panel: • This could be difficult, because the San Francisco court is the most liberal in the country. 18 of the judges were appointed by Democratic presidents compared to seven appointed by Republicans. • 3. Go back to Washington State, Judge James Robart: • The ruling from the 9th Circuit only deals with the temporary restraining order issued by District Judge James Robart on Feb. 3. • 4. Go Write a New Executive Order
  • 28.
  • 29. Sense of Upheaval – DHS and Ethical Code • State Dept Memo: A dissent memo complied by several officers in • State Department, which blasts the Trump administration for endorsing a policy • “which closes our doors to over 200 million legitimate travelers” • and “runs counter to core American values of nondiscrimination, fair play, and extending a warm welcome to foreign visitors and immigrants.” • “We are better than this ban,” the memo adds. 900 Signed it. • Ethics: Government workers must put loyalty to the LAW and the COUNTRY • ‘above loyalty to persons, party, or Government Department’.
  • 30. This is the time for true leadership. Should CEOs Speak Out on What Is Right and Wrong? America is a society at war with itself. • What Should Leaders Do? • First, forget “sides” and go to first principles: every great company has a clear sense of societal purpose and guiding values. • Have conversations about the actions that the people want to take • Be encouraging to people to shape what kind of society they want, directly.
  • 31. Schools Protect Immigrant Children • Chicago Schools Say Immigration Officials Can't Enter Buildings Without Warrants & Offer Parents Safety Tips • The new guidelines came from Chicago Public Schools Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson, who told principals to deny federal immigration authorities access to their buildings without a criminal warrant.
  • 32. Witnessing Islamophobic Harassment? Action Steps to Take • 1. Engage Conversation • Go to them, sit beside them and say hello • Ignore the Attacker • 2. Pick a Random subject and start discussing it • The Weather, a movie, etc. • 3. Keep Building Safe Space. • Keep eye contact with them and do not acknowledge the attacker’s presence • The absence of response from you two will push them to leave the area shortly • 4. Continue the conversation until the attacker leaves • And escort them to a SAFE place if necessary.
  • 33. Keep Your Eyes Wide Open • The corporation that deports immigrants has a major stake in Trump’s presidency, “There’s a lot of money to be made.” • If Trump’s plan to deport 2 or 3 million more immigrants comes to pass, ICE will almost certainly turn to private industry. • CSI Aviation, Trump has stake in this company, has received more than $300 million dollars in contracts to provide the Department of Homeland Security with air passenger service. • In fact, nearly every step of the detention and deportation process has become an opportunity for private businesses to cash in. The detention facilities are not only operated by companies, but the services inside them — healthcare, food, phone systems — are contracted out to specialized firms. • ICE has relied on private flights to deport immigrants for migrants from Central America. ICE Air has contracted with commercial airlines and charter flight companies operating out of four U.S. airport hubs to take people either back to their country of origin or to another detention center within the United States.
  • 34. What You Can Do •Tell people to contact organizations like ACLU and CAIR •Sign petitions •Support and stand up for one another
  • 35. If you See something, Say Something •It is now your responsibility •If you see discrimination in your daily life •Take Action, Stand Up to the Oppressor, vocalize yourself •Don’t Just Stand By •We the People, Are Greater than Fear.
  • 36. Call Congress •Tell Them You are against this Executive Order that keeps immigrants out. •This is not what the United States stands for. •That the U.S. does not discriminate against religion and national origin.
  • 37. Today’s Message • Call Congress, Speak Out, Vote in every single election • Believe and Love Each other • Love Your Neighbor as Yourself Mark, 12:31 • Keep your eyes on the News
