Main goals: talk about 2 main things: 1. creating content. 2. sending content.
Bingo-- Everyone gets a sheet. Go around the room. Each person names one box that they belong in. First person to get bingo wins a prize. Match yourselves with a partner. Super users find a partner with a new user.
Can Someone please describe the online newsroom? Our online newsroom is a blog consisting of up to the minute disaster updates. It offers timely and hyper-localized updates during disasters including photos, audio, video, preparedness info, and press releases. All of the items are available for media distribution. The site is all about you guys in the field. It is your voice from the ground. You are the content creators for the online newsroom, we just aggregate it on the blog. The goal of creating this site is two-fold: to offer public information to the media and the public. But for you guys, it is both your outlet to the public and an information source for you.
You’ve sent in hundreds of photos, videos, audio reports, and press releases. We received a lot of publicity for the online newsrooms over the last year resulting in over 160,000 views on the newsrooms for Ike and Gustav. The content has been great, but now it’s time to focus not just on sending LOTS of content, but on sending lots of really focused content. We want to ramp up the training this year to practice telling stories throughout our content.
Throughout your professional career, you’ve been told not to use the word “I” and you’ve been told to show the big picture. In social media though, we want the inside scoop and the personal perspective. We want to be put into your shoes. So throw away all the rules and let’s get personal. If it helps to conceptualize, think about it as if you were writing a diary entry.
Ask volunteers to read each entry These aren’t quite the format we’re asking you for, but they are great examples of tone and voice.
Here is a list of the type of content that we want you to send us for posting: In just a few minutes we’ll focus on audio, photos, and postcards (and I’ll explain what a postcard is). I just also want to mention that if you would like to do a video along the same lines, you’re welcome to. We’re just not covering video in depth in our class today. Additionally, we know that you are not usually creating press releases during disasters, but please keep in ind that we want those too. So if you’re on a distro list for releases please forward them to us or let us know in some way that they exist and we will track them down.
Consent forms. I know they’re not fun, but they ensure we don’t get sued. Please remember that if there is a face, voice, or name of a non-red crosser used in the content you create, you must have a consent form signed. Tip: Take a pic of the Consent form and send it to us with the photos.
We’ll come back to this page again later but before you create your content, I want you to know what you’re doing with it. As you create your content keep in mind that we’ll want the following information for captions: Next, we are going to cover different types of content and you’ll create some items yourselves. At the end we’ll all share our newly created content and discuss.
Postcards from the field are short, first person snippets of information. Write up a four to six sentence description of your experience for submission to our online newsroom. This is one way that we can tell the human side of the story on the newsroom. Volunteer to read aloud. This is a good example, but not in first person. What I like is that it tells a story and is very personal.
Postcards are new, and none of them have been submitted in the first person, so I created one for you guys to see to get an idea of what we’re looking for. Read aloud. It’s short and sweet, but It tells a personal story while also offering useful information.
Put yourself in your disaster scenario. A tornado has hit. Think about what it is like to be in a disaster, think about all the information you have. Now write a postcard of your own that tells YOUR story. Remember to use the word I, show the small picture, and show your individual work load. Take 10 minutes.
All of the following photos were submitted by amature photogs: Talk about these photos. Why are they powerful? What story do they tell?
What about these photos? What story do they tell? What makes them so powerful? Are they more or less powerful than the photos on the last page? THEY CAPTURE THE MOMENT. Corpus Christi has had 18,518 views.
Take 3 photos for the online newsroom. Take at least one to go with your postcard. We don’t just want a headshot. We want you in action, or a picture of the story you’re telling. 15 minutes.
You don’t need expensive audio equimpent to send us audio for posting on the online Newsroom. You can sign up for a service called Utterli (formerly utterz). It is a really easy and simple way to send audio- its just like leaving a voice message
Where possible make your audio mesh with your postcard and photos. You can think of a postcard as an audio version of the postcard, but please don’t just read your postcard. Tell a story. Ask yourself the same questions you answered for the postcard… What brought you here today? What event has changed you today? Write an outline to stay focused if you’d like. Take 10 minutes.
