Postcard halves: Allocate half the number of postcards as the total number of participants.
Cut each card in half using zig-zag scissors or making a zig-zig cut. Mix up the cards &
distribute a half to each participant. Participants must then try to find their partner (the
person whose card matches up with theirs). Each partner interviews the other; then, all
participants present their partners to the rest of the group.
Famous Person on your back: Put post-its or sticky notes with the name of a famous person
written on the back of each participant. Ask participants to walk around and as they do, their
fellow participants should try to act out or mime something which helps them to guess who
they have on their back. When they do guess, they can interview the person who helped
them figure it out. Then, all participants present their partners to the rest of the group.
If I had a million Rupees: Ask participants to introduce themselves by giving their
name, grade/standard in school, expectation for the challenge, how they would spend a
million Rupees if they won such an amount. You can make a small bill and write "one million
Rupees" and pass this around as a prop.
Dream trip: Same as above, but instead of how they would spend the money, where would
they go on their "Dream Trip".
Deserted on an island: Ask participants to introduce themselves and as they do, tell their
fellow participants what they would want to have with them if they were deserted on an
island.

Notas do Editor

  1. Technovation wants to close the gender gap for women in technology and business. Over the course of the program young women all over the world will be creating solutions to issues in their community, no longer being just a user of technology but an innovator.
  2. Have all the mentors and volunteers in the room introduce themselves. Have the students introduce themselves if they don’t know each other.Intro next slide: Now we will be going over what Technovation is into more detail.
  3. We are going to watch a short video of the Technovation PSA to give you an idea of what the program is about. IF GIRLS HAVE ALREDY SEEN THIS< PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SKIP.Play the video from YouTube: http://youtu.be/2IV24SB32ag
  4. This year’s challenge is to build an app that solves a problem in your local community. Theme categories include:- Create an app a for local organization- Teen issues (Example: suicide, peer pressure, teen pregnancy…)-Women's issues (Example: domestic violence, eating disorders, underrepresentation…)Your team doesn’t have to pick only one of the categories if there is another community problem that you want to solve. “Community” can be defined however you want it to be. The community you are targeting is something that we will be asking more about when we look at the business plan and marketing strategy. If you want to focus on your school community, age group, or state wide for instance then you are free to do that. Just remember that your market size and target audience will have to be defined.Build up excitement to this idea. Here are apps made by Technovation participants in past years. There are more app examples on the Technovation website.
  5. If you are using App Inventor then you will need a Gmail account to access the program. Please make sure all of your team members are registered as an official team. Remember that the deadline to register is March 1st 2014.
  6. Each week you will work toward creating your final deliverables. These are due on April 26th 5pm PST.
  7. Once again, all deliverables are due on April 26th, , 2014. Only projects submitted by the deadline will be considered for the competition.Technovation judging criteria is heavily weighted toward demonstrating that you are building an APP that will be useful to a particular group of people. To know that your app is useful, you will do research to validate that what you are building has a market and will solve the problem you designed it to solve. One high school team from each region will be selected to come to the Technovation World Pitch event in the San Francisco Bay Area (USA) in June, 2014. One middle school and university team from around the world will be selected to present at world pitch and receive their prize.
  8. Have the girls find the judging rubric in their student workbook on Page 5. Have the girls read the criteria out loud and make sure to point out the opportunity to earn bonus points.
  9. Part of the experience with Technovation is being exposed to other teams and mentors around the world who are working just as hard as you. To stay connected we will be using the Technovation Community where you can post questions, suggestions, meet other teams, and participate as part of the larger Technovation community.
  10. Part of the experience with Technovation is being exposed to other teams and mentors around the world who are working just as hard as you. To stay connected we will be using the Technovation Community where you can post questions, suggestions, meet other teams, and participate as part of the larger Technovation community.
  11. The rest of the time we are going to spend getting used to MIT App Inventor. If you haven’t completed the App Inventor 2 tutorials please take the time to complete those now. This is the list of tutorials that need to be completed to give you an understanding of how to build an app. In order to build your app you will need to understand the basics in these tutorials. To download the tutorial in pdf visit http://www.technovationchallenge.org/curriculum/lesson-1/
  12. Next week we will be brainstorming the problems in your community you want to address with a mobile app. Come prepared with some ideas to share. If you haven’t completed the tutorials today, please make some time to complete them before the next time we meet.
