A space solar power satellite system or SSPS can generates electricity without CO2 gas nor harmful debris with competitive cost. So, it should be attached importance in SDG and ESG programs. The SSPS is a huge system working in space so that several key technologies have to be innovated or verified in space before the final manufacture. I will introduce those key technologies in terms of difficulty in applying to SSPS. In a research and development plan, key technologies with more difficulty should be ranked higher. Antennas are typically difficult ones. It is explained how the antenna is challenging compared with the existing antennas on the ground and in space. Finally, I will show you a R&D plan to put SSPS into practical use in about 30 years.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is experiencing steadily growing interest over the recent years. For good reason, since these innovative algorithms and methods, such as machine learning and deep neural networks, in which knowledge is acquired and applied based on data, enable the automation of a wide range of processes and quickly deliver precise results. AI is also getting more and more popular in the space sector. The Institute of Space Technology & Space Applications (ISTA) at the Universität der Bundeswehr in Munich is conducting research around AI for space operations, science, and technology. An overview of activities and current developments towards fault management, autonomous collision avoidance, autonomous landing, as well as radio science at ISTA will be presented.

Presentation delivered by Dr. Ron Sega, Director of Graduate Programs in Systems Engineering at Colorado State University, to INCOSE Colorado Front Range Chapter on Nov 21, 2013 and Dec 10, 2013. Abstract: A brief history of the evolution of systems engineering will be presented; reviewing its origins in the aerospace industry to the current applicability of systems engineering principles to contemporary, complex areas such as energy systems. Previous practical case-study experience in the civil space and government defense sectors will be outlined to provide a backdrop for the current systems engineering educational activities at Colorado State University where they are applying the systems engineering approach to various complex systems through graduate degree program offerings and increased research activities. A customer-driven Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Systems Engineering program and a Certificate of Completion program in Systems Engineering from the Fort Collins campus began in the Fall of 2008.

Space Situational Awareness Forum Following another very successful conference in London in November 2014, Space Situational Awareness 2015 took place in Hyattsville, Maryland in May 2015, with over 60 SSA experts from all over the globe coming together to discuss the most pressing SSA challenges. With increasing dependence on space-based services, the ability to protect space infrastructure has become essential to our society. Any shutdown of even a part of space infrastructures could have significant consequences for the well-functioning of economic activities and our citizens’ safety, and would impair the provision of emergency services. However, space infrastructures are increasingly threatened by the risk of collision between spacecraft and more importantly, between spacecraft and space debris. As a matter of fact, space debris has become the most serious threat to the sustainability of certain space activities. In order to mitigate the risk of collision it is necessary to identify and monitor satellites and space debris, catalogue their positions, and track their movements (trajectory) when a potential risk of collision has been identified, so that satellite operators can be alerted to move their satellites. This activity is known as space surveillance and tracking (SST), and is today mostly based on ground-based sensors such as telescopes and radars. With a focus on solving the political issues but not ignoring the technical, Space Situational Awareness 2015 the leading gathering of dedicated SSA experts from the USA, Europe and beyond, to discuss and debate the business, political and technical challenges that lie ahead. Take a look at our previous Space Situation Awareness event… Who should attend Space Situational Awareness? Space Situational Awareness 2015 is a community of experts from Government, Space Agencies, Satellite/Spacecraft Operators, Space Lawyers, Space Insurance providers and Defense who are looking to understand and predict the physical location of natural and manmade objects in orbit around the Earth, with the objective of avoiding collisions. How can you get involved in Space Situational Awareness? If you feel that you could add to the debate and discussion at Space Situational Awareness, we’d be delighted to hear from you. Please drop us a line on +44(0)7769157787 or email me at adam.plom@coriniumintelligence.com.

The landslide consists of rock wedge threatening two roads which are important for local transportation. The present work encompasses all the components of an early warning system, including the geological knowledge, the risk scenarios, the kinematic characterization of the landslide, the choice and installation of the monitoring system, the setting of appropriate alarm levels and the definition of plans of civil protection. The focus is on practical and logistical issues met in all these phases and the countermeasures adopted. At present the system consists in 13 wire extensometers, 1 thermometer, 1 rain gauge and 3 cameras. Should a velocity threshold be exceeded by two or more sensors, the attention level would be entered, causing improved monitoring and surveillance. In case the behaviour of the landslide changes and, by using expert judgment and forecasting methods, an imminent failure is hinted, then an alarm is issued and the upper road is closed.

Engineers play critical roles in astronomy, from building telescopes, to designing scientific instruments, to operating observatories. Working together, engineers and scientists answer fundamental questions about our universe. In this session, you'll hear from women engineers making contributions to astronomy by developing a new high resolution optical spectrograph, adapting telescope control software for remote operations, architecting document management and managing critical systems for the next generation of telescopes. You will learn about the different engineering disciplines involved in astronomy, key concepts and technologies shaping astronomy today, and how to find job opportunities in astronomy as an engineer.
