3. Aerospace Platform and STEPS Project
Synergies between the Piedmont Aerospace District and
the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 20072013 enabled Regione Piemonte to design and fund the
initiative “Piattaforma Aerospazio” for accelerating the
innovation of aerospace technology within the Region and
reassuring its worldwide excellence

4. STEPS Technology Domains
Thales Alenia Space coordinated the overall project that involved Politecnico di
Torino, Università di Torino, Università del Piemonte Orientale, ALTEC and 22
SMEs based in the region
The 3-year reaserch activities focus on the following space exploration enabling
technologies:

8. STEPS 2 - Sistemi e Tecnologie per l’EsPlorazione Spaziale fase 2
The idea is to continue the technological development in selected areas with the
objective to pass from a TRL 3 to 5/6 in order to be ready for possible in-orbit
validations in the short-medium term
In particular the technologies of STEPS have been screened using the following
criteria: quality of the results, effectiveness of the involved partnerships, opportunities
to have in-orbit validation in short/medium time frame, strategic values for their
application in future space projects and maximum utilization of the infrastructures and
laboratories developed in STEPS
STEPS 2 started in January 2013 and will last two years including design of target
flight hardware, development of a ground prototype and functional testing
Total Cost ~ 10 M€ co-funded by EU and Regione Piemonte (POR FESR 2007/2013)
and STEPS 2 ATS
Team: 4 Large Industries, 17 SMEs, 3 Universities and 1 Research Centre

10. Conclusions & Perspectives
• The STEPS 2 project, coordinated by Thales Alenia Space – Italia, involves the Politecnico di
Torino, the Piedmont Universities and research centers, and an articulated network of PMI
afferent to the Piedmont Aerospace District
• The various STEPS 2 partners contribute to the consortium not just with their specific
expertise but also with the relevant results of on-going contracts, making up a synthesis of
the relevant scientific, technological and industrial Piedmont capabilities
• STEPS 2 shows evident transversal synergies with the other two projects of the Piedmont
Aerospace District in terms of competences, technologies, products and infrastructures. This
value is reinforced by the network established within the District with possible strategic
follows-up also in other fields like Civil Protection, Energy, Mobility, Robotics, etc.
• STEPS 2 contributes to increase the competitiveness in the Regional Productive System
promoting PMI involvement in the space sector
• STEPS 2 promotes consolidation of the District’s technological excellences with advanced
technologic spin-offs in other market sectors
• STEPS 2 demonstrates the Piedmont entrepreneurial and research capabilities aiming at
developing strategic technologies that might have the opportunity to be validated in space in
a short-medium term in some of the Space Exploration initiatives that are planned at national
and international levels
• STEPS 2 promotes the general public engagement and young generation education in space
exploration development
