The document discusses Alenia Aermacchi's involvement in the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) program. SESAR aims to modernize European airspace by increasing capacity and safety while reducing costs and environmental impact. Alenia Aermacchi is participating in projects to integrate SESAR solutions onto regional and military aircraft, including airborne 4D trajectory management and airborne separation assistance. The company is also working on interoperability between civil and military data links and accommodating military datalinks in the ATM network. Future work may focus on regulations and technologies to allow unmanned aircraft to operate in non-segregated airspace as part of SESAR extensions.

2. The future Single European Sky
Single European Sky
initiative for the
modernization of the
European airspace
Rationale
•
Fragmentation of the airspace
•
Absence of common standards
•
Obsolescence of current ATM infrastructure/assets
•
Air Traffic Increase forecast
Features of the new system
•
Ability to accommodate more air traffic flow
•
Guarantee an adequate environmental sustainability
•
Increase the safety
•
Reduce the air traffic management costs

4. The Airspace: a resource for different users
Different users with
different needs in terms of
operations and
systems/technologies.
Airliners
Business Aviation
General Aviation
Military Aircraft
Unmanned Aircraft
Rotorcraft
The challenge is to
accomodate the aircraft
diversity with a limited
impact to the overall
system performance.
The aircraft diversity is expected to increase in the future years (unmanned).

5. From the Single European Sky to SESAR
Derived from needs of society and
airspace users
Design Goals for scalable future capability:
Capacity: handle 3 times traffic
Safety: factor 10
Environment: - 10% effects per flight
Costs to airspace users: - 50%

In preparation
Definition Phase (2004-2007) has
defined the ATM target concept
including the different operational
and technological steps to be taken,
the priorities in the modernisation
programmes and the operational
implementation plans.
Development Phase (2007-2016), will: develop and validate new ATM operational
concepts and procedures in accordance with the ATM master plan; develop and
validate new equipment, systems and/or standards ensuring a convergence towards
a single ATM system in Europe and globally interoperable.
The Deployment Phase (2014-2020) will consist in the large scale production and
implementation of the new European ATM infrastructure at high performance

The future
In the future years, UAS will contribute to increase the aircraft diversity.
No regulations exist for UAS they can only fly in a segregated airspace.
Regulations
Operational Aspects
Technological gaps
Complementary Measures
RPAS are a great opportunity for Europe, the European Commission is
highly committed on the matter, i.e. to allow RPAS to fly in a nonsegregated airspace.
In the “SESAR extension” the RPAS insertion will be a topic where the
European Industry will have to focus their effort.

11. Conclusions
The Single European Sky is a great opportunity for the community in Europe
The EC recognizes the important success of SESAR in terms of results and is
pushing for an extension of the programme to achieve the ATM master plan
targets
The challenge to cope with the airspace users diversity inside of the SES is
perceived as a crucial factor for SES success
More effort is needed to explore technologies and solutions for military,
general and rotorcraft aviations, within and outside of SJU (e.g. EDA)
Adequate effort need to be allocated inside and outside SESAR extension
(e.g. EDA, ESA, …) to assure that the necessary activities for RPAS insertion
into ATM out of segregated airspace will be pursued
