“Kingdom Living”
A Series on the Sermon on the Mount
“Jesus – Are you saying "Anger is the same as Murder?”
Matthew 5:21-26
Jesus teaches us that ANGER is the pathway to destruction,
damnation, and hell
Matthew 5:21-22
21
“You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago,
Don’t commit murder, and all who commit murder will be in
danger of judgment. 22
But I say to you that everyone who is angry
with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. If they
say to their brother or sister, ‘You idiot,’ they will be in danger
of being condemned by the governing council. And if they say,
‘You fool,’ they will be in danger of fiery hell.
2. We so often want to define sin as an outward action. Jesus tells
us that sin is a deep disposition of the heart.
“Our Lord here ranks under the head of murder, even that anger
which goes no farther than the heart; which does not show itself
by an outward unkindness, no, not so much as a passionate
word...
(John Wesley, Sermon 22, Discourse 2, I.8)
Anger Management is not the answer to anger issues... It starts
with a simple, gut-level, honest, out-loud confession to Jesus.
Along with confession to God, comes the humility to make the
first step of reconciliation towards others
Matthew 5:23-26
23
Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there
remember that your brother or sister has something against you,
24
leave your gift at the altar and go. First make things right with
your brother or sister and then come back and offer your gift. 25
Be sure to make friends quickly with your opponents while you
are with them on the way to court. Otherwise, they will haul you
before the judge, the judge will turn you over to the officer of
the court, and you will be thrown into prison. 26
I say to you in all
seriousness that you won’t get out of there until you’ve paid the
very last penny.
The greatest impediments to the Kingdom of God are most often
not attacks from the outside but the conflicts among us on the
inside.
For Personal and Group Reflection
1. Do you harbor an angry spirit just under the surface of
things? How is that affecting you and your relationships with
others?
2. Anger is a normal human emotion. It’s what we do with it that
turns it into danger. What might be a way you can interrupt the
inner turn toward nursing the anger and see that moved in another
direction?
3. Are there relationships in your life right now that are in a
state of conflict? Are there people who have something against
you? What would it take to go to those people and try to make
3. peace?
4. How does your pride keep you from pursuing peace with others?
