• This year that number has risen to 1200 people a day
• FLORIDA is the third largest state in the U.S. and growing
• U.S. Fastest growing state for the first time since 1957

FLORIDA BMP’S
• WHAT ARE AGRICULTURAL BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES?
• FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND
CONSUMER SERVICES’ BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMP) PROGRAM, A BMP IS
DEFINED BY LAW AS A MEANS, A PRACTICE OR COMBINATION OF PRACTICES
DETERMINED BY THE COORDINATING AGENCIES, BASED ON RESEARCH, FIELD
TESTING AND EXPERT REVIEW, TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE AND PRACTICABLE ON-
LOCATION MEANS, INCLUDING ECONOMIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS,
CONSIDERATIONS, FOR IMPROVING WATER QUALITY IN AGRICULTURAL AND URBAN
URBAN DISCHARGES. ACCORDING TO SECTION 373.4595(2)(A), FLORIDA STATUTES,
BMPS FOR AGRICULTURAL DISCHARGES MUST REFLECT A BALANCE BETWEEN WATER
WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY

New soil moisture probes are expected to save
water for irrigation, keep nutrients out of
groundwater and save money for farmers.
The Nature Conservancy and researchers at the
University of Florida with funding from Mosaic
Company, Inc. have started monitoring water levels in
soils for Southwest Florida farmers who will be able to
access the data via a digital dashboard.
“The whole key is the soil moisture probes are a great
tool for the ag industry to manage their irrigation which
in return manages their nutrients because you are not
pushing the nutrients out of the root zone of the plants,”
according to David Royal, Florida Nutrient Stewardship
Project manager.

• COMMISSIONER’S AG•ENVIRONMENTAL
LEADERSHIP AWARDS 2022
• LEE PEANUT FARMS Lee When Brooks Garland joined Lee
Peanut Farms in 2011, he understood that farming in the
Suwannee River Valley would be challenging. Deep sandy soil,
diverse plant diseases and rising operating costs would make
work difficult. For Lee Peanut Farms to be successful, Brooks
recognized the need to streamline the use of its resources and
inputs, and to implement Best Management Practices.
• GROVES OF PEACE RIVER THE GROVES OF PEACE RIVER
Zolfo Springs, In 2006, third generation farmer Marlon
Pendergrass left the hills of Northern Alabama for the fertile
lands of central Florida. Along with his family, Marlon
journeyed south to join his uncle at the family’s newest farm,
The Groves of Peace River. What began as an opportunity to
expand the family business quickly grew into an unmistakable
passion for Florida Citrus.
• USHER LAND & TIMBER Chiefland Usher Land and Timber,
located in Chiefland is part of Usher Farms, a family owned and
operated timber and cow-calf operation just a mile from the
Suwanee River. Under the guidance of owners Ken and Lynetta
Griner, the operation is growing more than timber and cattle,
it’s growing awareness of the importance of agriculture in
Florida.

Notas do Editor

  1. The BMP manuals are the tool that OAWP uses to enroll agricultural producers in the BMP program. The manuals have 4 sections; descriptions of BMPs, Notice of Intent to Implement BMPs, the corresponding checklist and supplemental reference information. The Notice of Intent or NOI is the tool that producers and staff use to enroll them in the program. An NOI will only be entered when a site visit has occurred. Self-enrollment is not allowed. The NOI allows producers notice the state of their intent to manage their property in a specific manner. The associated checklist identifies practices they will use. Recordkeeping is addressed in each manuals and is denoted by a pencil icon. Sample record keeping forms are provided in the manuals.
  2. North American Fertilizer industry leaders continually place a high priority on nutrient management. In a recent survey, TFI executive committee members were asked to identify industry priorities as a way to check in on the organization’s strategic efforts. Water quality and our ability to reduce nutrient losses to improve water quality continually remain at the top of the priority list. In 2016, industry members helped shape industry goals relative to 4R nutrient stewardship, and the defined vision they focused on achieving was for ‘all plant nutrients to be applied using the 4Rs. Industry efforts collectively focus on research, education, assessment, outreach and advocacy. I’ll touch on all of these today, but lets start with research.
