Habit 1
Adapted from Stephen Covey:
“The Seven Habits of Highly Effective
people”
What is a Habit?
Habit
Knowledge
(what to, why to)
Desire
(want to)
Skills
(how to)
Habit 1 is Based on:
I can change using:
 Self-Awareness: ability to think about your very
thought process.
This is why we can evaluate and learn from others’
experiences as well as our own.
Enables to stand apart and examine even the way
we "see" ourselves.
 Imagination: the ability to create in our minds
beyond our present reality.
 Conscience: a deep inner awareness of right and
wrong.
 Independent Will: the ability to act based on our
self-awareness, free of all other influences.
Between Stimulus and Response
“Proactivity” defined
 We are responsible for our own lives.
 Our behaviour is a function of our decisions, not our
conditions.
• We have the initiative and the responsibility to make
things happen.
• Look at the word responsibility- response-ability-the
ability to choose your response.
Reactive Vs Proactive
 It’s not what happens to us but our response to
what happens to us
Determination Vs Opportunity
Proactive person will have self confidence , determinations
Reactive person always wait for opportunity to take an initiative
Listening to our Language
Reactive Language
 There’s nothing I can
do.
 That’s just the way I am.
 He makes me so mad.
 They won’t allow that.
 If only..
 I have to do that.
 I can’t.
 I must.
Proactive Language
•Let’s look at our alternatives.
•I can choose a different
approach.
•I control my own feelings.
•I can create an effective
presentation.
•I will choose an appropriate
response.
•I choose.
•I prefer.
•I will.
Circle of Concern/Circle of Influence
Circle of
Concerns:
Things which we
can do nothing
about
Circle of
Influence:
things which we
can control
Proactive people
focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence
work on things that they can do something
about
their energy is positive, causing their Circle of
Influence to increase
Reactive people
 focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern
 they focus on problems they have no control
over
 their energy is negative/critical, causing their
Circle of Influence to shrink
The Other End of the Stick
Consequences and mistakes.
Consequences are governed by natural law.
Behaviour is governed by principles.
If we had the choice to make over again, we call
these choices mistakes.
Important to immediately admit and correct our
mistakes.
How to be proactive
Making and Keeping Commitments
Commitments we make to ourselves and to
others, and our integrity to those
commitments, is the essence of our growth
and clearest manifestation of our proactivity.
Power to make and keep commitments to
ourselves is the essence of developing the
basic habits of effectiveness
Proactivity 30 days tests
 Try to see…
 How to make and keep commitments?
 How we handle on traffic jam?
 How do we react to irate costumer?
 How do you react to upset relatives?
 How we views a problems?
 Where we focus our energies?
 END
