Leonard Maltin describes Metropolis as “a classic silent-film fantasy of a futuristic city and its mechanized society, with an upper-class young man abandoning his life of luxury to join oppressed workers in a revolt.” (Maltin’s 2004 Movie and Video Guide, Penguin Group) In the scene, Shift Change, the workers are seen trudging to work on the machines and back to their underground city. Their heads are down and they move with a very stiff gait. The work they appear to do is very mechanical. Later in the film, workers are sacrificed to the machine god. Moloch. This view is similar to how Taylor viewed workers – as “part of the machine”. Students should be discuss any job experience they’ve had that is similar and ways to improve job satisfaction as a manager.
