2. CPR – Why learn it?
It saves the life of a friend or family
member in a medical emergency
Research shows that heart attack
victims have double the chance
of survival if they are immediately
given CPR
CPR can unblock a choking
victim’s airway
CPR aids survival of drowning and
suffocation victims

3. Warning: Begin CPR only if you
have been trained properly!
Determine Responsiveness
If victim appears unconscious,
gently shake him/her and shout,
“Are you OK?”
If no response, have somebody call
Emergency Medical Services (911)
If alone, call EMS before proceeding
to ABCs Call 911 when
victim is
unresponsive

5. A is for Airway
Roll victim onto
his/her back,
supporting head
and neck
Open airway by
head-tilt / chin-lift
maneuver
Look, listen, and feel
for breathing for 3 - 5
seconds
If no response,
proceed to B

6. B is for Breathing
Pinch shut the victim’s nose and
put your mouth over victim’s
mouth making a tight seal
Give 2 slow breaths
If breathing does not go through
(the chest does not rise),
reposition the victim and try
again
If breathing still does not go
through, perform the Heimlich
maneuver to clear airway
If breathing does go through,
proceed to C

7. C is for Circulation
Check carotid pulse for 5 to
10 seconds
If there is a pulse but no
breathing, give 1 breath
every 5 seconds (about 12
per minute) until the victim is
breathing or help arrives
If there is no pulse, begin
chest compressions

8. Remember; begin CPR only
if you have been trained
properly!

Notas do Editor
Joke about the title to draw the audience in but emphasize the importance of CPR as well.
