Technologies for Health and Well-being Technologies for Health and Well-being (TSB) is a group of excellence from the Institute for the Applications of Advanced Information and Communication Technologies (ITACA), dedicated to research and development of new ICT applications, focused on human health, quality of life and social services

eMOTIVA aims the integration and deployment of the required infrastructure for monitoring and motivating people with dementia in nursing homes. The infrastructure will detect behavior patterns, such as those associated with potential disorders, and also provide mechanisms for personalized motivation.

At the GameDays 2014 conference at TU Darmstadt, Germany, Mario Drobics, Thematic Coordinator "Health Information Systems" at AIT Safety & Security Department, gave a keynote about game-based IT solutions for active & healthy aging. Game-based approaches can be used to support traditional intervention schemes which enable older adults in staying active & healthy for a longer time. These techniques are especially useful as they improve the motivation of the users and thus help to improve the effectiveness of the intervention. TV-based games are often oriented along traditional video games. External sensors like video cameras can be incorporated to provide direct feedback on the activities of the user. This information can also be utilized to reassess the status of the user and monitor his/her training progress. Mobile devices and the large range of available body worn sensors offer the opportunity to design games around daily and outdoor activities. By adding a social level to the games, competition and group efforts can be initiated, giving further motivation to reach a certain goal.

Although entertainment, social connection, and gaming is driving drive the initial adoption of VR and AR technology, the deepest and most significant impact of the next generation of VR/AR technology will be to enhance clinical care and to improve personal health and wellness. VR and AR technology will also help facilitate the shift of medicine to direct personal care. We know from decades of clinical research that VR/AR technology can provide breakthrough solutions that address the most difficult problems in healthcare - ranging from mood disorders such as Anxiety and Depression to PTSD, Addictions, Autism, Cognitive Aging, Stroke Recovery, and Physical Rehabilitation, to name just a few. VR technology can also improve clinical measurements and assessments by making them more objective and functional, and improve medical training such as surgical skill training and procedure planning by applying simulation-based learning principals. Personal health and wellness will be improved by using VR to promote healthy lifestyles and to reduce stress and anxiety. Presentation done by Vicente Traver at IEEE EMBC 2018 in Honolulu. Authors are Antonio Martinez-Millana, Carmen Palao, Carlos Fernandez-Llatas, Paulo de Carvalho, Anna M Bianchi and Vicente Traver. Abstract: Detection of abnormal cardiac events during clinical examination is a matter of chances, as such events may not happen at that precise moment. We therefore propose the implementation and evaluation of a mobile based system that allows a real-time detection of cardiovascular problems related to heart-rate variability. Our approach is to integrate an Internet of Things eHealth kit based on Arduino and validated algorithms for heart rate variability to build a low-cost, reliable and scalable solution. 12 healthy users have evaluated the system in different scenarios to assess the best performing algorithm and the best windowing interval. Finally, a mobile system based on an Android application which integrated the Pan and Tompkins algorithm with a 20 seconds windowing and a module to retrieve real-time electrocardiography through a Bluetooth interface was implemented and assessed. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. 3. eMOTIVA aims the integration and deployment of the required infrastructure for monitoring and motivating people with dementia in nursing homes. The infrastructure will detect behavior patterns, such as those associated with potential disorders, and also provide mechanisms for personalized motivation.
