Crowdfunding Handout
1. Crowdfunding
A brief history
In 1997 the rock band Marillion crowdfunded the tour which promoted their
seventh album, raising $60,000 through the internet. This is believed to be the
first online crowdfunded project.
The first crowdfunding website appeared in 2001 and by 2012 there were 500
crowdfunding platforms online. That year marked a milestone, with the first £1m
crowdfunded project.
