Edgar Allan Poe
January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849
2. American author, poet, editor and literary
critic, considered part of the American Romantic
Movement.
3. He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts
He was orphaned young when his mother died shortly after
his father abandoned the family.
Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of
Richmond, Virginia, but they never formally adopted him.
4. He attended the University of Virginia
for one semester but left due to lack
of money.
5. After enlisting in the Army and later
failing as an officer's cadet at West
Point, Poe parted ways with the Allans.
6. His publishing
career began
humbly, with
an anonymous
collection of
poems, Tamerl
ane and Other
Poems (1827).
7. In 1835, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old
cousin.
In January 1845 Poe published his poem, "The
Raven", to instant success.
His wife died of tuberculosis two years after its
publication.
8. Poe called her "Muddy."
Although there is some debate
as to whether or not she was a
positive influence on
Edgar, there seems no doubt
that she cared for him like a
son and that Poe certainly
thought of her as a mother.
The poem "To My Mother" (first
published July 7, 1849) is
clearly dedicated to her.
9. "The Raven"
"The Raven" is a narrative poem by American writer
Edgar Allan Poe.
First published in January 1845, the poem is often
noted for its musicality, stylized language, and
supernatural atmosphere.
10. “Nevermore!” (c)
It tells of a talking raven's
mysterious visit to a
distraught lover, tracing the
man's slow descent into
madness. The lover, often
identified as being a
student, is lamenting the
loss of his love, Lenore.
"The Raven" was first
attributed to Poe in print in
the New York Evening Mirror
on January 29, 1845. Its
publication made Poe
widely popular in his
lifetime, although it did not
bring him much financial
success.

13. On October 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in
Baltimore.
The cause of his death is unknown and has been
variously attributed to alcohol, brain
congestion, cholera, drugs, heart
disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other
agents.
