Introduction:
Every machine works at different speeds. But the
prime mover say motor runs at fixed RPM, say
1440,2800 etc. Hence it becomes necessary to
reduce the speed of the motor. Therefore one
assembly known as GearBox will be used in between
motor and output machine.

Gear: A gear is a cylindrical part having cut teeth on
its periphery , which mesh with another toother part
(gear) in order to transmit torque.
Gear Box: A gear box is a mechanical method of
transferring energy from one device to another and is
used to increase torque while reducing speed.
It is an assembly of
Gears, shafts, bearings, keys, bearing covers, oilrings
, oilseals and a casing to house all these machine
elements.

Gear boxes are widely used in Industries. It is
difficult to make a full list, however the following list
gives majority of applications.
1. Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes
2. Machine Tools e.g.Lathe,Drilling machines,Milling
machines,Grinding machines
3. Sugar machinery
4. Cement machinery
5. Automobiles
6. Material handling equipments

Conclusions:
Gear box is an essential unit of every machine.
Because machine runs with specific speeds/torque
which are to be provided as per the need of
material,tool and customer.
