Neecha Nagaris a 1946 Hindi film directed by ChetanAnand. Written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, it was a pioneering effort in social realism in Indian cinema, and paved the way for many such 'Parallel Cinema' films by other directors. It starred ChetanAnand's wife, UmaAnand, Rafiq Ahmed, KaminiKaushal, and ZohraSehgal. It was the debut for Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravi Shankar as music director. It was based on a Hindi story, Neecha Nagar, written by HayatullaAnsari, which in turn was inspired by Russian writer Maxim Gorky’s ‘Lower Depths'. It took an expressionist look at the gulf between the rich and poor in the society. So... what did the movie do which no other Indian movie has done so far??
It won the “Grand Prix du Festival International du Film“ at Cannes Film Festival. This award is the precursor to the Palme d’Or at the Cannes.

In an epic poem by ChandBardai, there is a storyabout the death of X which is not borne out by historical documents.Y had been taken a prisoner and his eyes were burnt with red hot iron rods as he refused to bow before X.Chand told X that Y was so skilled an archer that he could take aim based only on sound. X disdained to believe this. In the spirit of their usual barbaric mockery, they brought the blind and hapless Y out to the field. Pressing a bow and arrows into his hand, they taunted him to take aim. Chand told that Y would not accept orders from anyone other than a king. Some iron plates were hung, a man struck them with a hammer and Y was supposed to hit them.To indicate where X was sitting, Chand composed a couplet in a language that only Y could understand. Y started shooting at the plates on X’s orders. When he hit the target courtiers said "vah" "vah" and X said "Shabash“. Recognising X's voice and turning in that direction, Y took aim based on the voice and the couplet, he sent an arrow racing to X's throat. X was stuck dead instantly.

X roughly means "God is the ultimate truth". It is the exclusive Sikh term for greeting each other, as the tenth master of Sikhs gave them the jaikara'Jo Boley So Nihal, X'. The saying implies that the one will be happy who says that God is the ultimate truth. In contrast, Punjabi Muslims use "Assalam-o-alaikum", other replies "waaalaikumassalaam" , and Punjabi Hindus use 'Namaste'.As per the Sikh RehatMaryada, or Code of Conduct, Amritdhari (Baptized) Sikhs greet each other with "WaheguruJi Ka KhalsaWaheguruJiKiFateh", meaning "The Khalsa (collective body of all baptized Sikhs) of God, Victory is of God". The reason is that since the meaning of X is set with God directly, to not reply is to condone the existence of God therefore un-acknowledging the divinity. It must be made of utmost importance that though you may not see eye to eye with the person who has greeted you, one must reply back in the formal manner enemy or not, Baptized or not.

The first myth about X is that in the first half of the 17th century, Madho Singh of Amber built his capital here with the sanction of an ascetic Baba Balanath, who meditated here, but said: “The moment the shadow of your palace touches me, you are undone. The city shall be no more!" In ignorance, Ajab Singh, one of the dynasty's later descendants, raised the palace to such a height that the shadow reached the forbidden place. Hence the devastation. The samādhi where Balanath is said to be buried is still there. The second myth is that the charm of princess Ratnavatiwas said to be matchless in all of Rajasthan. In the same region there was a tantrikSinghiaSevrawho was desperately in love with her. One day, he saw the princess' maid in the market buying scented oil for her. He used his black magic and put a spell on the oil which would hypnotize the princess by her merely touching the oil, and she would surrender herself. The princess was herself well trained in magic. She threw the bottle away and it rolled over a stone. As soon as the oil touched the stone, it started rolling towards the tantrik and crushed him. Concentrating all his powers, he spat his dying curse: "I die! But thou too, thou Ratnavali shall not live here anymore. Neither thou, nor thine kin, nor these walls of the city. None shall see the morning sun!” The night was spent transferring the palace treasures to Ajabgarh. In the morning came the tempest leveling everything to the ground.X and its significance??

Roza Bal in the Khanyar district of Srinagar. It is alleged to be the Tomb of Jesus. The tomb consists of a low rectangular building on a raised platform, surrounded by railings at the front. It has three arches at the front and four arches at the side. Inside is a rock carving that is said to show feet bearing crucifixion wounds. The body is buried according to the Jewish tradition of directions and not according to the Islamic tradition. However, the building also houses the burial tomb of a local Muslim saint, Mir SayyidNaseeruddin, who has been buried in line with Islamic directions. The tomb had previously been maintained by local descendants of the buried sage. It is currently maintained by a Board of Directors consisting of Sunni Muslims. SahibzadaBasharatSaleem, a former caretaker (now deceased), claimed to hold genealogical tables that link him as a direct descendant of the buried sage.In 2003, The BBC first televised a documentary that included a section on the story of YuzAsaf titled "Did Jesus Die?"In 2010, the Govt. of India's Film Division has produced a comprehensive documentary film on the subject, titiled 'The Rozabal Shrine of Srinagar'. It has been written & directed by Yashendra.

Krishna placed a curse on X that "he will carry the burden of all people's sins on his shoulders and will roam alone like a ghost without getting any love and courtesy till the end of Kaliyuga. He will have neither any hospitality nor any accommodation; He will be in total isolation from mankind and society; His body will suffer from a host of incurable diseases forming sores and ulcers that would never heal". X had to surrender the gem that he had on his forehead which used to protect the wearer from any diseases, weapons, snake bites, attack from demigods and demons. Krishna further stated that "the wound caused by the removal of this Gem will never heal; The blood will always ooze out from it forming puss with foul smell and thereby causing lots of pain to him till the end of Kaliyuga". Thus, X will suffer to such an extent that he will be in search of death every moment, and yet he will never die. There are various reports of sightings by people of a tall, strong, ailing man with a wound on his forehead begging for medication till today.

There are two legends associated with the etymology of X. The first one is that at the time of yugapralaya (dissolution of cosmos) nothing remained except Lord Shiva with the Y. He started the creation of new yuga from Y.The second one, according to the Puranas, during the meeting of Brahma and Shiva atop Mount Kailash, Brahma failed to show the due respect to Shiva. Angered by this, Shiva plucked one of Brahma's heads. In an act of penance, Brahma came down to Z and installed a Lingam to please Shiva. X, Y and Z??

X is the most common shuffling technique in Asia and other parts of the world, while the overhand shuffle is primarily used in Western countries. The X shuffle is also known as "Kattar" or "Kenchi" (Hindi for scissor). X differs from stripping in that all the action is in the hand taking the cards, whereas in stripping, the action is performed by the hand with the original deck, giving the cards to the resulting pile. About having been denied the Nobel Prize in 1979 X said,"Steven Weinberg, Sheldon Glashow and Abdus Salam built on work I had done as a 26-year-old student. If you give a prize for a building, shouldn’t the fellow who built the first floor be given the prize before those who built the second floor?"There was a controversy involving X and the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2005 too. Several physicists wrote a letter to the Swedish Academy, protesting that X should have been awarded a share of the Prize for the X diagonal representation (also known as X-Glauber representation) in quantum optics, for which Roy J. Glauber won his share of the prize. Speaking to the Hindustan Times, he expressed frustration at the way he was ignored, saying“The 2005 Nobel prize for Physics was awarded for my work, but I wasn’t the one to get it. Each one of the discoveries that this Nobel was given for work based on my research.... The irony of the situation is that in spite of all these facts being available in print, the diagonal representation instead of being referred to as the X representation is dubbed as either the P-Representation (as if Glauber discovered and named it first) or at best as `Glauber-X' Representation.“

Traditionally made during death ceremonies, but nowadays in most festivals in Tamil Nadu, a specific type of vadai called ulundhuvadai is served. This is made of UradDal, which has one of the highest protein contents among all dals (100 gms of urad dhal has 24.0 gms of protein), and is thus one of the main protein sources of the meal. Historians today believe that this food item is proof of a certain change in the habits of Brahmins which took place around 500BC. What change and what was responsible for it?
The Advent of Jainism caused Brahmins to turn vegetarian. The Ulundhuvadai was prepared to make up for protein lost due to the non-intake of meat.

X was originally owned by the royal Gaekwad family, the Maharajas of Baroda. X weighed 25.95 carats (5.19 g) at the time it was found. It was later cut into a pear shaped diamond, weighing 24.04 carats (4.81 g).A popular myth is that X brings bad luck to its owner if it is carried across the sea. It was later sent by the Gaekwad family to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the only female monarch of the Habsburg dynasty. The diamond was returned to the Gaekwad family later, and in 1860, it was fitted to a necklace. The Maharaja SayajiraoGaekwad sold it to an unknown buyer in the early 1920s.The diamond resurfaced in the 1940s, in 1943, the diamond was purchased by Meyer Rosenbaum of Detroit, President of the Meyer Jewelry Company. Rosenbaum later gave the diamond to Marilyn Monroe, who wore it for the shooting of the song Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, and also in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (pic in next slide). X was displayed publicly in an exhibition in 1944.In 2008, the X was next displayed publicly in an the exhibition 'Diamond Divas', organized by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre.

Hyderabad issues: The Government of Hyderabad had made several efforts to organise private bankers to set up a banking company which could issue paper money. The British, however resisted the attempts of Indian princely states to issue paper currency. The acute shortage of silver during the First World War and the contributions of Hyderabad State to the British war effort led them to accept, in 1918, paper currency in denominations of Rs.10/- and Rs.100/- issued under the Hyderabad Currency Act. The currency was designated the OsmaniaSicca (OS). Rupee One and Rupees Five notes were issued subsequently in 1919 and Rupees One Thousand notes were issued in 1926. After the setting up of the India Currency Notes Press at Nasik, Hyderabad notes came to be printed there.

Excerpts from a person’s speech. Who is the person??The only passengers in my compartment were a girl and a boy. I struck a conversation in French with the young girl. She talked about the travails of living in an iron curtain country, until we were roughly interrupted by some policemen who, I later gathered, were summoned by the young man who thought we were criticizing the communist government of @.The girl was led away; my backpack and sleeping bag were confiscated. I was dragged along the platform into a small 8x8 foot room with a cold stone floor and a hole in one corner by way of toilet facilities. I was held in that bitterly cold room without food or water for over 72 hours.I had lost all hope of ever seeing the outside world again, when the door opened. I was again dragged out unceremoniously, locked up in the guard's compartment on a departing freight train and told that I would be released 20 hours later upon reaching Istanbul. The guard's final words still ring in my ears  --  "You are from a friendly country called India and that is why we are letting you go!“

On Christmas Day 1872, a game of rugby between 20 players representing England on a side and 20 representing Scotland, Ireland and Wales on the other was played. The match was such a success that it was repeated a week later — thus rugby had reached India. They formed a club in January 1873. The club joined the Rugby Football Union in 1874. However, when the free bar had to be discontinued, the membership took an appreciable drop. The members decided to disband but keen to perpetuate the name of the club, they withdrew the club's funds from the bank, which were in Silver Rupees, had them melted down and made into a cup which they presented to the RFU in 1878.The cup is of Indian workmanship. The body is finely engraved with three king cobras forming the handles. The domed lid is surmounted by an elephant. The inscription on the cup's wooden base reads: X.The original trophy is in a very fragile state following many years of poor treatment and is not in a strong enough condition to attend functions or go on tours. When won by England, the original cup was put on public display in the Museum of Rugby in Twickenham, where it slowly turns around in a purpose built showcase.Despite the request that the trophy be used as rugby's answer to FA Cup, the RFU refused believing that "competitiveness" ran against the amateur ethos and instead decided that a game should be played each year between England and Scotland and whoever wins should keep it for that year. Matches have continued on an annual basis ever since except during the World Wars. Currently, this game is the annual match between the two nations in the Six Nations Championship. Name the cup which is the same as X.

X is a village in the Uttara Kannada district of the Karnataka. It is believed that Lord Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow here.Legends in the SahyadriKhand of the Puranas indicate that Kerala was reclaimed from the sea by Parashuramawhen he threw his axe, the weapon by which he annihilated the Kshatriyas, into the sea to prevent the erosion of the land stretching from X to the Southernmost tip of India. X is also mentioned in the ShrimadBhagavataPurana.Another reference to X describes how Ravana received the atmalinga from Shiva after a penance at Mount Kailash reciting the self-written ShivatandavaStotram. Shiva instructed Ravana that the atmalinga should not be placed on the ground as it would establish itself where placed on earth. On his way back to Lanka, Ravana stopped for his evening prayers at X. To prevent Ravana from getting a weapon as powerful as the atmalinga, Ganesha, disguised as a Brahmin boy, told Ravana that he will hold the atmalinga until Ravana finishes his prayers. As soon as he received the atmalinga, Ganesha promptly put it down. Ravana tried to extricate it, resulting in throwing the coverings of the Linga to Surathkal, Dhareshwar, Gunavanteshwar, Murudeshwar and Shejjeshwar temples.X is also the name of a town in Nepal with a temple for @.Trincomalee (Ravana’s capital) is referred to as X in Sanskrit.

ShivkarBapujiTalpade was born in 1864 in the locality of Chirabazar at Dukkarwadi in Bombay. He was a Sanskrit scholar and from his young age was attracted by the @ expounded by the great Indian sage Maharishi Bharadwaja. In 1895, the he had designed Marutsakthi based on technology documented in @. His demonstration took place before a large audience in the Chowpathy beach. This historic day (unfortunately the actual date is not mentioned in the Kesari newspaper of Pune which covered the event) was witnessed by the famous Indian nationalist MahadevaGovindaRanade and His Highness Maharaja SayajiRaoGaekwad of Baroda. Historian Evan Koshtka has even credited Talpade as the first man to do it. Maharaja SayajiRao was willing to fund Talpade. But warned by the Government, the Maharaja stopped helping Talpade. It is said that the remains of the Marutsakthi were ‘sold’ to a British company by Talpade’s relatives. Talpade’s wife died at this critical juncture and he was not in a mental frame to continue with his researches. But his efforts to popularize the greatness of Vedic Shastras was recognized by Indian scholars, who gave him the title of VidyaPrakashPradeep. Talpade passed away in 1916 unhonoured. So…what did he do actually??
Talpade used his knowledge of VaimanikaShastra to design Marutsakthi (Power of Air), an aircraft that flew 1500 feet into the air before falling down to the earth. He did this 8 years before the Wright brothers. He used solar energy and created a mercury vortex for his aircraft.Surprisingly the aircraft engines being developed for future use by NASA use mercury bombardment units powered by Solar cells!(Pics in the next 2 slides)

  • 132. Talpade used his knowledge of VaimanikaShastra to design Marutsakthi (Power of Air), an aircraft that flew 1500 feet into the air before falling down to the earth.
