About Victoria
I have been in business for over 10 years and a mum for nearly 2 (as of
2013!). I graduated from University with a First Class Degree in
Computer Science but soon found that it did not give me the freedom I
craved to create things and to action my ideas.
I love the freedom that having a business gives me while always having
something to challenge my brain and this gives me an amazing sense of
achievement.
I believe I have the best of both worlds, have not had to give up my
career for my family yet I will always be there when Oliver needs me. I
earn my own money but around a schedule I set. I have created
something for me which I, and my family, can feel proud of.

business lows but together they combine to give me a wealth of experience which I am
thankful for. I want to share this experience with other mums, including you, to help
navigate safely through the pitfalls of running a business around a young family.
I see myself as the stabilizers on the bike on which you will use to start this amazing
journey. I will help to keep you motivated up those big hills, while stopping you from
crashing down after the inevitable wobbles.
My dream is to motivate, inspire and empower fellow mums to look at their options and
to find exciting income opportunities from their existing talents or interests. Something
which will give them the freedom and flexibility that all mums deserve.
Why should we be made to feel guilty when we leave work to pick up the kids when
others choose to work till 9pm? Or guilt when we have to miss our little one’s first Sports
Day because of an unsympathetic boss? We HAVE to find a way for us mums to earn
money, doing something we love, while prioritizing our most important role in the world –
being a mum.

A Quick Word of WARNING
First I need to tell you, one mum to another, that this is not the easy route. There is no get
quick rich scheme and no cast iron guarantees. It is about putting in the hard work now so
you can enjoy more freedom in the future.
You will rarely find true wealth by chasing a monthly pay packet, you need to think cleverly
about your options to give you the best chance at financial freedom. My aim is to help you
enjoy spending quality time with your family, whenever YOU want and to do so without
worrying about money.
There are so many opportunities waiting for you out there, that I wanted to share a few
here and if nothing else plant the seed that there is another way, a way far better suited to
us mums than the 9-5!

Business ideas for Mums
There are so many businesses which are ideal for us mums.
I am looking here at business ideas which
• allow for the level of flexibility we need
• provide a good hourly rate of pay
• would be fairly easy to market as a mum
• do not necessarily exchange time for money (as this is what we are lacking the most!)
• can be leveraged with the power of the internet to maximize your income.

I wanted to write about a few of the opportunities which I have experience
in and can personally help you with. These are businesses through which I
have found my own success and I am here to help you do the same.
Each of the opportunities I will mention tick all the boxes and offer
maximum flexibility and room for creativity. You can take any of the ideas
and make them your own which is half of the fun!

Earn Money Blogging
A personal favourite of mine, but one which is still quite new to me.
I LOVE the fact it takes everything I have learnt about earning money online from running a
traditional business and creates a way in which anyone can earn money while they sleep by
simply talking about things they love!
Sounds too good to be true? Well yes, there is much more to it than that but in a nutshell
you basically create a blog about a topic you enjoy talking about. You write a ‘diary’ about
your love of the topic a few times a week and then as fellow ‘fans’ of that topic visit your
pages to read what you have written they may click on adverts you have on your site which in
turn earns you money.

You can create income from your blog in many ways such as:
• Linking to products you like, and which tie in with your topic and earn a commission
• Using a system called Adsense which allows you to earn money for every click
• Creating a product which takes your knowledge up to the next level. Either a tutorial video,
mini course or e-book
• Partnering with someone who has created a product or service which would be of interest
to your readers and promote them for a commission
• Charging a monthly fee for an advert or listing on your site
• Using your site to promote a range of physical products or services you offer
The trick with blogging is to become the authority in your chosen topic so people searching
for help or information will find you and visit your site.
You also need to make sure there are plenty of ‘monetization’ opportunities using the above
methods in your chosen topic.

Blogging can help build any business or can become a business in it’s own right. There are many
bloggers who earn 6-7 figure salaries just from writing about what they know. This is not an average or
overnight success but has taken them 2-5 years in some instances. Could you create that income from
working 9-5 in the same amount of time?
You can set up a blog for free at www.wordpress.com or www.blogger.com. I am a Wordpress fan myself
but would recommend hosting this yourself rather than the free one they offer. I recommend this
because a) you can include more functionality and is more scalable plus b) it is often against their terms
if you use it for affiliate marketing or commercial use. Don’t worry though you can see how easy it is to
set up a blog using a host I use here

Inspiration Corner
I recently did an interview with a very switched on and
successful mum blogger who went from working in
Starbucks to earning $17,000 a month within just 8
months. She did this through blogging about her life.
All she did was decide she was going to do this and she
did!
You can find more about the business Niamh set up
here. It is quite American, and know Niamh herself
found the videos cheesy but I also know many people
having great success with it. I am not an active user
but it is basically a blogging system with a great
affiliate program and one option.

Make Something
This is what I started doing many moons ago when I first left my job. I made keepsakes for
people locally and earned great money doing it. I still do it for loyal customers now.
You can also create keepsakes, or anything you can think of, and then sell these in craft fairs,
local events, online and through word of mouth.
This is a great business for mums as you can do the ‘production’ of your product in the evening
and can normally take your little ones to appointments.
When selling online it becomes even more ideal as you do not have to be present to earn
money and can fit in the making around your family.

Here are some top things to keep in mind:
When you make things you need to remember that your business is to promote and sell those
‘things’ and not just make them!
One of the key areas people struggle with is pricing and often mistake turnover with profit.
When you price your items you need to ensure you leave enough room to allow for your time,
marketing and business costs and a profit.
You also want to think ahead incase you become too busy to cope on your own. Have you
allowed enough in the price to pay someone to help with production and still make a profit? If
you want this to grow into a business which allows you to step back and be with your family
you can not rely on only you. You need to think big!

If this sounds good to you and something you want to
pursue then the first thing is to think of a product. Is there
something you know how to make, or something you would
love to learn how to make? Can you see a market for this? Is
it seasonal or suitable for gifts. Could it be personalized or
manufactured?
As I mentioned I used to run a local Keepsake business and
now train mums to create local businesses doing just that!

Freelancer
Do you have a skill which others are looking for? If so there are so many opportunities online for
you to promote your services.
You could…
• create a ‘gig’ on Fiverr.com
• sell your services on PeoplePerHour.com
• approach local companies and offer your services
• keep your ear to the ground on Facebook groups and forums and offer your services to
those that need them.
Your hourly rate will depend on your level of skill and the skill itself but I know of many Virtual
Assistants (Personal Assistants who work remotely) who command £40 an hour. How much would
you have to charge an hour to replace your wage?

Assignment 1: Create an Ideas Vault
Create a list of ideas and options available to you. Have fun and DO NOT let the part of your brain
that says “you can not do that” or “ who do you think you are?” stop you writing something down.
If you think it then write it down we can always eliminate it later if needs be. So write as if you are
dreaming and that no one is watching.
All of these will help us to put a picture together of what would make your perfect income
generator.
It is so easy for us to think that we have nothing to offer, nothing to give which others would be
interested in, or no ‘skill’ but NO-ONE in this world has the same combination of experiences and
skill set as you. There will be something unique to you which you can turn into an income
generator I guarantee!

Out of that massive list – what are your three favourite ideas which make your heart beat a little
faster?
Take three ideas and research them a little deeper so…
• What level of competition is there for what you are going to offer?
• What are your competitors doing well?
• What are your competitors doing badly (this is where you can come in and do better!)
• How easy is it to get in front of your potential customers?
• Can you imagine doing this for years to come?
• How can you monetize the idea? i.e. who could you partner with, what products could you
promote…

Can YOU actually do this?
We would not be human if we never doubted our ability. While I want to show some
techniques to help build confidence and tame that naughty man sat on our shoulder fueling
those insecurities I am not sure we will ever be 100% there. It is how we deal with those
thoughts that is important.
What I want for you is to trust in yourself and know that if you decided to do something you
would find the way, in your own way. You may not have all the answers now (who does!) but
half the fun is learning and building an exciting future without knowing the ending.
The trick is to believe that your ending is a happy one and believe with every fiber of your
being that you WILL do this and will keep going until you do.

Important Information
There are some Important things you need to consider when starting your own business.
First you need to register as self employed with the Inland Revenue even if you do not earn much.
It may be that your tax return is zero but you still need to register. Information here
You may also need some form of insurance depending on your business.
You will want to keep on top of your accounts from the start, no matter how small your business is.
You can do this yourself quite easily. I filmed an interview with my accountant for an overview of
everything you need to think about.

Sacrifices
Unless you have lots of free time on your hands (if you do I would love to talk
to you manage that!) then it goes to follow that when you take on something
new like this that you will need to make a sacrifice somewhere along the line.
So perhaps to start creating your dream life you may have to give up on a
favourite TV programme, or at the very least work a way in which you can
watch it while you are doing something which does not require concentration.
For me it is the housework which suffers, but I know that it will always be there
tomorrow and it is a sacrifice I am willing to make ;-)

Finding More Time
Unfortunately I do not own a time machine or the Delorean from Back to the Future so that option
is out but I do have some tips to help you find more time and make the most of the time you do
have. We need to be realistic about what we can achieve as mums as our number one priority
always has to be our babies!
I find breaking everything up into the smallest chunks possible helps as we often have little 15
minute windows which we could easily waste. Also try and set it up so you can do as much as you
can from your phone. Did you know you can even update a webpage from your phone, connect to
someone on Twitter or update your Facebook page! This is ideal if you are ever waiting for an
appointment somewhere.
I make sure I have a clear plan and to-do list so when I sit down to work I look at my list and set to
work without having to think too hard about what I have to do. I always know what is on my list
before any of my ‘work’ hours.

You need to schedule in sacred work time as a
mum which is protected time. This is normally
during nursery time or after the bed time
routine. I make sure when I am busy that I
have eaten tea and am all ready to start work
straight after Oliver has settled. I know this is a
good time for housework but see the page on
sacrifices. You need to decide what is
important at that moment and spend your
time on that.

I wanted to share this video with you as it just proves what
belief can do to change your life. Even when experts tell you
“that’s not possible” why should you believe them?
Imagine how different this chaps life would be if he had just
accepted his ‘lot’ and would you have blamed him?
Are you being told something about what is or is not
possible? If so make a note of it as we will deal with this
soon! The very act of noticing these things is sometimes all
that is needed to shift things out of your way. Oh and
taking action towards your dream.

Marketing is Key
As I said earlier you need to become the marketer of your business what ever that it. The
actual doing is actually a small part! With that in mind, to succeed in any business you need to
know how to find customers who want to buy your product or service. Or if blogging, people
who want to read what you are writing.

Getting Online
I would recommend getting an online presence, no matter what business you are in as is a great
way to attract business. Here are some of your options:

£££: Pay a developer to do the whole thing for you.

Assignment 3: Make a Start
The key to success is to just START and then take consistent action regularly.
Don’t procrastinate by thinking and dreaming. Take positive steps, no matter how small, towards
your dream.
For this to work you need a plan which has been broken down into mini steps which you can just
work through set by step as you tick things off your list.
You also need a clear vision to keep you pulling forward and something to pull on to motivate
you to take this action.
What ONE thing can you do now, even if it is a quick email to move yourself forward? GO AND
DO IT!

Parting Words of Wisdom
Before our little journey together is over I wanted to share this
