Why community management is
emergent as a leadership discipline
1. Companies are moving from hierarchical to networked and collaborative -
companies as communities .
2. Accelerated by distributed work practices better suited to the knowledge
economy.
3. Move to social business systems driving need for community management as
optimal, intuitive leadership
Communities are not:
● Homogenous
● Happy & conflict free
● Group hugs
● Borderless
● Self-regulating
Communities are:
● Diverse
● Contradictory
● Turbulent
● Boundaried
● Human
Community management
= productive communities
Purpose is a minimum
feature set for productivity.
Community is the scaffold.

share the feeling they belong to something, can
influence and be influenced by one another,
and can have their needs fulfilled by fulfilling
the needs of the group.
How do you lead like a community manager?
Create boundaries for identity
Create conditions for vulnerability
Develop rituals for cohesion
Create mechanisms for influence
Welcome (and protect) emotional connection
Calibrate a sense of place
The world needs a new model for leadership.
The old ways generate broken outcomes.
Companies are transitioning to communities.
Work is no longer a place.
Communities [people] remain an orgs most valuable asset.
Community management is the future of all management

  4. So why community management?? COMMUNITY MANAGERS ARE SHEPHERDS OF PURPOSE!!! What are we going to focus on today? How community management techniques and tactics can help you build and sustain better organizations over the long term and make you better leaders. To manage a community, we need to understand its make up.
  5. What re the signifiers of belonging? Can you exact influence? Can you be influenced? Are your needs being met? Are you getting what you needed when you joined? Are the needs of the group being met - and what is your role in that? Shared emotional connection - frequency and quality of interactions.
  6. Using those elements you can come up with this definition of community. So why community management?? What are we going to focus on today?
