- Founded in 2005 following a meeting in Lisbon. Intended to symbolise the idea of young GPs embarking on a voyage of adventure and learning
- Vasco da Gama , was a Portuguese explorer in the European Age of Discovery and the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India.
- Other European GP trainee organisations which come under the umbrella of VdGM existed & many other organisations were being formed
