A bit of a different topic here as I covered 5 points that I wish someone had told me when I was early in my career.
I went through the reason why you SHOULDN'T focus on creating a personal brand, and why I think social is overrated for the typical professional and a complete waste of time. Just focus on creating the best product you can - meaning yourself and your work output. The rest will follow naturally if you do that one thing... just like the example I gave about Evernote.
Then I went through my top tips for becoming a more persuasive writer, since *so much* of our communication today is written. Writing is a skill that needs to be practiced, just like playing the piano. And a lot of what we were all taught in school is NOT what you should do in a business environment if you want to maximize your effectiveness. Gave the tip to check out the Hemingway app (www.hemingwayapp.com) for a low LOE way to start editing yourself with my tips.
Becoming a better presenter was also covered, and a detailed discussion about salary negotiations and how you can turn the tables and take control in those situations.
I talked at length about salary negotiations, and I've updated those slides to include the most basic points I was trying to make on each (since you can't hear me talking through this deck, obviously).

Negotiating is not something that is disreputable or
shady. It’s not “haggling” - it is negotiating. And in
the professional world, this is perfect acceptable…
even expected (if you’re not a sucker).
This is Jan.
It is Jan’s job to get you signed with the company as
cheaply as possible, but Jan is not super motivated to do
so, because Jan is not spending Jan’s money to hire you.
Jan is spending Jan’s budget.
Negotiating Never Makes
(worthwhile) Offers Worse
There are no exploding offers. If you try to negotiate, the very
worst that will happen is that you get the exact offer they gave
You should negotiate all offers as a matter of course. It can’t
Never Give A Number
This is a trick when a hiring professional asks your salary. They
just want to know so they can add 5% and that’s your offer.
You are not required to give them this information.
Dodge this question with something like this:
“I’m really more concerned with making sure we’re a great ﬁt.
If not, then the numbers don’t matter anyway. If we are a great
ﬁt, then I can be ﬂexible with you, and you can be ﬂexible with
When you get an offer, tell them “that’s an interesting
number,” not a “wonderful” number.
Check with your Peeps
Buy time if you feel boxed into your negotiation or need
some time to think it over. Don’t accept a bad offer!
Since they can’t ask about your marriage situation in
the U.S. all you have to do is say “That sounds
reasonable, but I’ll have to run it by the family.”
