Security The disk arrays of the VTL3500 storage system are protected by the RAID technology, thus preventing the data loss incurred by disk damages. The backup data are stored as data blocks. This design effectively prevents the backup data from wrongly deleted or being affected by viruses. The import and export of backup data are performed under encryption, thus guaranteeing the security of data on physical tapes. Remote replication of virtual tapes are also encrypted, thus ensuring the security of tape data during replication. Users on the control console are classified and allocated different rights, so that a user must perform operations according to the rights. Energy-saving The VTL3500 is designed with the disk soft start and server hibernation technologies. The fans can adjust the rotating speed based on the temperature, thus reducing the power consumption and noise in normal conditions.
HP tapes are not scalable. HS tapes can be scaled to up to 48 TB.
Quantum tapes are not scalable. HS tapes can be scaled to up to 48 TB.
H3C tapes are not scalable. HS tapes can be scaled to up to 48 TB. In the table, the backup rate of HS tapes is based on lab tests whereas that of H3C tapes is announced by the company for publicity purposes.
Effect The IP replication function of the VTL3500 implements remote data-level disaster recovery . The data on the virtual tapes are replicated after de-duplication is performed, thus significantly reducing the data amount to be transmitted and the requirement for bandwidth. The data on the virtual tapes are compressed and then are transmitted on the IP network. Thus, the data transmission is secure and economic.
Application scenario The data of large branches are transmitted to the data center over IP networks, so the amount of backup data is huge. Also, the backup window cannot meet the requirement of customers. Solution Deploy a VTL3500 on each large branch and multiple VTL3500s in the data center and enable the data de-duplication function on all the VTL3500s. Back up the data of the branches to the local VTL3500 and copy the data to the VTL pool of the data center over the IP network. Effect The performance for backing up the data of large branches is improved and the backup window is significantly shortened. The data de-duplication function significantly reduces the amount of data to be transmitted in IP replication, thus reducing the bandwidth consumption.
