AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

As a global university, American University (AU) has a long tradition of welcoming students from across the United States and
the world to our campus. At AU, “access” and “engagement” are not merely catchphrases; the spirit of these words permeates
the campus environment. Students who share a desire to understand and shape tomorrow’s world are attracted to AU because
of its culture of engagement and service.

Discover American University:

AU offers a broad choice of majors and minors and preprofessional advising programs in law and medicine. You may
also double major. You have the option to construct your own interdisciplinary major. You can have your major in one
AU school and a minor in another AU school or college. We understand that tomorrow’s careers require an
understanding of a wide variety of fields, and we encourage students to transcend the traditional boundaries of
        academic disciplines.
A short distance from Washington, D.C.’s centers of government, business, research, commerce and art, AU’s 84-
acre (34-hectare) traditional campus is located in one of the most attractive and safest residential areas of the
city. Originally planned by Frederick Law Olmsted, the noted architect of New York City’s Central Park, AU’s campus
was designated an arboretum and garden in 2003.

Of our 100 international students (non US citizens), 41 are receiving AU Merit Awards ranging from $5,000 to $32,000 per
year. Two will receive AU endowment scholarships (Turkey and Cyprus). A total of ten international freshmen have been
admitted to our most prestigious Honors Program. We are honored to welcome one CASP undergraduate awardee from Fulbright
Cyprus, one Trinidadian government supported open scholarship grantee, one IIE StudyAmerica student from India, and many
more talented students from around the world.

By LIZETTE ALVAREZ
The New York Times
Published: June 26, 2009

Seven high school seniors from New York City, each first in their class, met as they prepared for their next chapter. They spoke
about their generation, the city, education, the economy and the future. They are profiled in photographs and audio and
through the texts of their graduation speeches.

Four are from immigrant families — Uzbekistan by way of Armenia, Colombia, the Dominican Republican and Lebanon.

THE CHICAGO SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGY IS CHARTERING THE NATION'S FIRST PH.D. IN
INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

Recognizing a need for more trained professionals to understand and work with global challenges such as socio-cultural
contexts, conflict, poverty, and natural disasters, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is chartering the nation's
first Ph.D. in International Psychology. Designed for working professionals and offered online, this post-master's doctoral
degree will leverage The Chicago School's 30-year pedigree of psychology training rooted in diversity and multicultural studies.

    • A three year, post-master’s program offered in a unique format tailored to the needs of busy working professionals.
Students take one course at a time, progressing through the program in a “cohort” fashion (i.e., with the same group
of fellow students in each of their classes for the duration of the program).
    • Students choose one of two concentrations:
o Organizations and Systems, which is offered online
o Trauma Services, which is offered in a “blended” format that includes both online classes and one weekend in
Chicago during each of the four concentration-related courses.
    • Students engage in two nine-day international field experiences (one in year two and another in year three) as well
as two required weekend residencies that focus on research and dissertation preparation.
    • The program is particularly appropriate for professionals who work or desire to work for multinational corporations,
international non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations (e.g. UN organizations), governmental
agencies, and faith based organizations with international missions.
    • Graduates are equipped with advanced research and program evaluation skills coupled with a rich appreciation for
the individual and group consequences of global events—preparing them to apply psychological principles in the
development of policy; assist individuals and organizations with understanding and collaborating with diverse cultural
populations and all levels of international organizations and functional systems; and design and evaluate the efficacy
        of international programs.

Scholarships and Fellowships AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS As a global university, American University (AU) has a long tradition of welcoming students from across the United States and the world to our campus. At AU, “access” and “engagement” are not merely catchphrases; the spirit of these words permeates the campus environment. Students who share a desire to understand and shape tomorrow’s world are attracted to AU because of its culture of engagement and service. Discover American University: AU offers a broad choice of majors and minors and preprofessional advising programs in law and medicine. You may also double major. You have the option to construct your own interdisciplinary major. You can have your major in one AU school and a minor in another AU school or college. We understand that tomorrow’s careers require an understanding of a wide variety of fields, and we encourage students to transcend the traditional boundaries of academic disciplines. A short distance from Washington, D.C.’s centers of government, business, research, commerce and art, AU’s 84- acre (34-hectare) traditional campus is located in one of the most attractive and safest residential areas of the city. Originally planned by Frederick Law Olmsted, the noted architect of New York City’s Central Park, AU’s campus was designated an arboretum and garden in 2003. Of our 100 international students (non US citizens), 41 are receiving AU Merit Awards ranging from $5,000 to $32,000 per year. Two will receive AU endowment scholarships (Turkey and Cyprus). A total of ten international freshmen have been admitted to our most prestigious Honors Program. We are honored to welcome one CASP undergraduate awardee from Fulbright Cyprus, one Trinidadian government supported open scholarship grantee, one IIE StudyAmerica student from India, and many more talented students from around the world. www.american.edu/admissions/international International Admissions American University Washington, DC, USA Tel: +1-202-885-6000 Evelyn Levinson International Admissions Office of Admissions American University email: levinson@american.edu 111 1 1

  • 3. II. News you can use IN UNCERTAIN TIMES, VALEDICTORIANS LOOK AHEAD By LIZETTE ALVAREZ The New York Times Published: June 26, 2009 Seven high school seniors from New York City, each first in their class, met as they prepared for their next chapter. They spoke about their generation, the city, education, the economy and the future. They are profiled in photographs and audio and through the texts of their graduation speeches. Four are from immigrant families — Uzbekistan by way of Armenia, Colombia, the Dominican Republican and Lebanon. Audio & Photos - Top of Their Class www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/06/28/nyregion/20090628_Valedictorians_feature.html THE CHICAGO SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGY IS CHARTERING THE NATION'S FIRST PH.D. IN INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY Recognizing a need for more trained professionals to understand and work with global challenges such as socio-cultural contexts, conflict, poverty, and natural disasters, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is chartering the nation's first Ph.D. in International Psychology. Designed for working professionals and offered online, this post-master's doctoral degree will leverage The Chicago School's 30-year pedigree of psychology training rooted in diversity and multicultural studies. • A three year, post-master’s program offered in a unique format tailored to the needs of busy working professionals. Students take one course at a time, progressing through the program in a “cohort” fashion (i.e., with the same group of fellow students in each of their classes for the duration of the program). • Students choose one of two concentrations: o Organizations and Systems, which is offered online o Trauma Services, which is offered in a “blended” format that includes both online classes and one weekend in Chicago during each of the four concentration-related courses. • Students engage in two nine-day international field experiences (one in year two and another in year three) as well as two required weekend residencies that focus on research and dissertation preparation. • The program is particularly appropriate for professionals who work or desire to work for multinational corporations, international non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations (e.g. UN organizations), governmental agencies, and faith based organizations with international missions. • Graduates are equipped with advanced research and program evaluation skills coupled with a rich appreciation for the individual and group consequences of global events—preparing them to apply psychological principles in the development of policy; assist individuals and organizations with understanding and collaborating with diverse cultural populations and all levels of international organizations and functional systems; and design and evaluate the efficacy of international programs.
