Although library collaboration is common and many libraries collaborate through many organizations, it is a relatively unexamined aspect of library work. Many descriptions exist, but little from the point of view of organization and motivation. We will present a framework for thinking about library collaboration and draw out some of the challenges successful collaborations face. We will also consider how collaboration is evolving and how trends may be accelerated. We will emphasize that collaboration is a set of strategic and tactical choices, that it is very influenced by people and politics, and that collective action poses problems. These dynamics are very much alive in questions around collective collections. We will look at collections as an example of the consolidation vs autonomy dynamic we observe in consortia generally. We also try and provide some guidance about how a collective collections initiative would be shaped – to identify points where decisions and commitments need to be made. We consider retrospective collection coordination (digitization, resource sharing, shared print) which currently tends to be layered over relatively autonomously developed collections, optimized at the institutional level, and prospective collection development (where libraries work together to optimize at the system level through collaborative collection development, licensing and so on). We consider some different dynamics with licensed and purchased materials, as well as institutionally created materials (research outputs, …).

Libraries and related organizations group together in a variety of ways to get their work done. They consort, for example, to lobby, to negotiate and license, and to build shared infrastructure. However, there are other aspects of collective activity that are becoming more important. In fact, I suggest that two are increasingly central to successful library activity: these are learning and innovation. Thinking this way about consortial activity suggests four areas where libraries come together to create scale advantages: capacity, learning, innovation, influence. Some consortial organizations span several of these, some are more specialised. This presentation will consider consortia under these headings. It will also briefly discuss how choices about scope, scale and sourcing are important decision points for consortia when considering their mission and investments.

Tradeoffs in Automatic Provenance Capture
Tradeoffs in Automatic Provenance Capture

Data munging is a crucial task across domains ranging from drug discovery and policy studies to data science. Indeed, it has been reported that data munging accounts for 60% of the time spent in data analysis. Because data munging involves a wide variety of tasks using data from multiple sources, it often becomes difficult to understand how a cleaned dataset was actually produced (i.e. its provenance). In this talk, I discuss our recent work on tracking data provenance within desktop systems, which addresses problems of efficient and fine grained capture. I also describe our work on scalable provence tracking within a triple store/graph database that supports messy web data. Finally, I briefly touch on whether we will move from adhoc data munging approaches to more declarative knowledge representation languages such as Probabilistic Soft Logic. Presented at Information Sciences Institute - August 13, 2015

Meeting an Unmet Need: Extending the Learning Commons Concept Through On-Campus Partnerships and Branding La Loria Konata, Georgia State University Libraries have reinvented themselves to remain relevant in the 21st Century. Establishing a Learning Commons space is an example of libraries using a business model to remain relevant to its clientele – the students. The goal or end result sought for Learning Commons is to become integrated into the academic and cultural life of the Georgia State University undergraduate experience. To achieve this outcome, the Learning Commons department decided to embark on a new journey of collaboration and marketing. La Loria will detail methods used at Georgia State University Library to turn its Learning Commons space into a place. With programming, additional services such as writing support, and marketing, the Learning Commons is slowly becoming an example of library as place. She will describe examples of programming done with the marketing approach used and the outcome of each event; collaboration and partnership opportunities with various campus units such as the Office of New Student Programs and Orientations; and the focus on customer service via improving reference services. La Loria Konata, <llkonata>, is the Learning Commons Coordinator at Georgia State University Library.

Emory’s Robert W. Woodruff Library opened the Research Commons in the fall of 2011. The 5,000 square foot space is dedicated to graduate students and faculty who are engaged in collaborative scholarly work which takes advantage of digital technology. This presentation will focus on the mission, the space, and the way the Research Commons takes advantage of its place in the library. From its location inside the library, the Research Commons is neutral space where interdisciplinary groups of scholars can work collaboratively. Almost all of the furniture is mobile, enabling users to configure the work areas to suit their needs. This open design also allows scholars to see what others are working on and to be inspired by what they see. These unplanned and serendipitous encounters, along with more formal events, allow the Research Commons to establish and nurture an interdisciplinary community of scholars interested in digital scholarship. Housed within the Research Commons is the Mellon Funded Digital Scholarship Commons (DiSC). The mission of DiSC is to work with scholars whether they require instruction on simple tools or need help planning and executing larger projects.

We present an architecture of embedding models, vector databases, LLMs, and narrow ML for tracking global news narratives across a variety of countries/languages/news sources. As an example, we explore the real-time application of this architecture for tracking the news narrative surrounding the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny coming from Russian, French, and English sources.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

The action of the next cyber saga takes place in the mystical lands of the Asia-Pacific region, where the main characters began their digital activities in the middle of 2021 and qualitatively strengthened it in 2022. Corporate espionage, document theft, audio recordings, and data leaks from messaging platforms were all a matter of one day for Dark Pink. Their geographical focus may have started in the Asia-Pacific region, but their ambitions knew no bounds, targeting a European government ministry in a bold move to expand their portfolio. Their victim profile was as diverse as a UN meeting, targeting military organizations, government agencies, and even a religious organization. Because discrimination is not a fashionable agenda. In the world of cybercrime, they serve as a reminder that sometimes the most serious threats come in the most unassuming packages with a pink bow.
