The Affair of the Slander
The Story
 Banu Al-Mustaliq were preparing to attack
Madinah
 The Messenger of Allah  decided to launch a
surprise attack against them
 He set out with his army
 He drew lots among his wives (custom)
 The lot fell to Aisha 
 She climbed her howdah and set out with him
Cont…
 The two armies met and the battle ended in
defeat for them and victory for the Muslim
army
 During they way back, the army stopped to
rest, Aisha  left the camp to answer the call
of nature then to search for her necklace
 The Messenger of Allah  decided to go on,
the men responsible for raising the howdah
didn’t recognize her absence
Cont…
 She was alone in an empty place, she decided to
remain where she was till they come and fetch her
 While she was sleeping one of the companions
“Safwan bin Al-Mu’attal” passed by her, he said: “To
Allah we belong and to Him shall we return! It is the
wife of the Messenger of Allah ”
 She covered her face, and didn’t speak a word, he
brought the camel and asked her to mount the camel
but did not catch up with them till the following day
Cont…
 When they reached Madinah hypocrites
accused Aisha  and Safwan 
 People in Madinah were divided into four
groups about the story of the Slander.
 The first, which was the majority, neither
believed such incident nor denied what
people were saying; most of them have kept
to their silence.
Reaction
 People of the second group, who were a
minority, strongly denied this hideous lie and
could never even accept it.
 For example: Abu-Ayyub Al-Ansari  was
asking his wife if she would have done such a
thing if she had been in Aisha’s place; She
swore by Allah that she would never have
done it; he told her then that Aisha would
never do it too, since Aisha – being the
Prophet’s wife and thus a mother to all the
believers - is surely better.
Reaction
 People of the third group had nearly the same
attitude as those of the first one, except that
here they helped this scandal to spread.
 This was either through talking a lot and even
writing poetry about it, e.g. Hassan Ibn-
Thabit, or through talking ill about Aisha, e.g.
Mistah Ibn-Uthatha and Hamna Bint-Jahsh,
who was the sister of the Prophet’s wife
Zainab Bint-Jahsh and who always knew that
Zainab was second favored after Aisha to the
Prophet .
Hypocrites behind the Slander
 People of the fourth group, who were the
reason and the origin of this whole thing to
arise and then spread, were of course the
hypocrites of Madinah.
 It is said that the one who carried most of the
slander mission was Abdullah IbnUbai Ibn-
Salul.
Aisha Situation
 Aisha said that she kept weeping for two
whole nights and a day continuously and
could never sleep until she thought her liver
would burst from weeping. The Prophet  and
Aisha really suffered; besides, the Divine
Revelation did not come to the Prophet  for a
whole month.
The Prophet Mohammed  Status
 the Prophet  asked Barira, Aisha’s slave, if
anything aroused her suspicion about Aisha.
Barira denied and swore by Allah on that.
 He  asked his wife Zainab the same thing,
she swore that she knew nothing about Aisha
except good.
 At this point, the Prophet  felt that another
step should be done. Meanwhile, he  can
neither resort to violence by all means, nor
can he  go to people and tell them that his
wife is innocent because there is no Qur’anic
ayah was revealed to support him; i.e. no
tangible evidence whatsoever.
 Anyway, the Prophet (SAWS) stood on the
pulpit and faced to the people saying, “O
Muslims! Who will help me against a man
( i.e. Ibn-Salul) who has hurt me by
slandering my family? By Allah, I know
nothing except good about my family. And
people have blamed a man (i.e. Safwan) of
whom I know nothing except good, and he
never used to visit my family except with
me”.
Aisha Telling the Story
 Aisha said, “on that day I kept on weeping Allah's
Messenger came to us, greeted, and sat down. He
had never sat with me since the day when what was
said was said. He had stayed a month without
receiving any Divine Revelation concerning my case.
 "Thereafter, O 'Aisha! I have been informed such and
such a thing about you; and if you are innocent, Allah
will reveal your innocence, and if you have committed
a sin, then ask for Allah's forgiveness and repent to
Him, for when a worshiper of Allah confesses his sin
and then repents to Allah, Allah accepts his
repentance".
Cont..
 When Allah's Messenger finished his
speech, my tears ceased completely so
that I no longer felt even a drop thereof.
Then I said to my father, "Reply to
Allah's Messenger on my behalf as to
what he said". He (i.e. her father Abu-
Bakr) said, "By Allah, I do not know
what to say to Allah's Messenger".
Cont..
 Then I said to my mother, "Reply to Allah's
Messenger". She said, "I do not know what
to say to Allah's Messenger".
 Still a young girl as I was and though I had
little knowledge of Qur’an. I said, "By Allah, I
know that you heard you have believed it. So
now, if I tell you that I am innocent, and Allah
knows that I am innocent, you will not believe
me; and if I confess something, and Allah
knows that I am innocent of it, you will believe
me.
 By Allah, I cannot find of you an example
except that of Yusuf’s father :
 “So patience is most fitting. And it is Allah
Whose Help can be sought against that (lie)
which you describe”
 Aisha continued, “Then I turned away and lay
on my bed, and at that time I knew that I was
innocent and that Allah would reveal my
innocence. But, by Allah, I never thought that
Allah would sent down a Divine Revelation
that would be recited (forever), as I
considered myself too unworthy to be talked
of by Allah with something that was to be
recited
The Affair of the Slander
 “Verily, those who brought forth the slander
are a group among you. Consider it not a bad
thing for you. Nay, it is good for you. To every
man among them will be paid that which he
had earned of the sin, and as for him among
them who had the greater share therein, his
will be a great torment.”
Leasons
 Hypocrites intention to harm the Messenger
of Allah by accusing his wife 
 Whatever harmed Aisha  would hurt him 
 No one should accuse any Muslim of
committing adultery without evidence.
 Disciplining the Believers for spreading the
Slander
 The punishment for the people who spread
the slander.
Aisha’s Knowledge
 Scholar of Islamic Jurisprudence with a broad
knowledge of Hadeeth
 Urwah bin Al-Zubair said: “ I have not seen
anyone with greater knowledge of Quran or its
obligations or the lawful and the unlawful, or the
poetry or the sayings of the Arabs or the genealogy
than Aishah”
 She narrated 2210 Hadeeth

  • 8. Overview  Her Family  Year of Sadness  Her Marriage  The Love prophet  had for Aisha  The Affair of the Slander  Aisha’s Knowledge
  • 9. The Affair of the Slander
  • 10. The Story  Banu Al-Mustaliq were preparing to attack Madinah  The Messenger of Allah  decided to launch a surprise attack against them  He set out with his army  He drew lots among his wives (custom)  The lot fell to Aisha   She climbed her howdah and set out with him
  • 11. Cont…  The two armies met and the battle ended in defeat for them and victory for the Muslim army  During they way back, the army stopped to rest, Aisha  left the camp to answer the call of nature then to search for her necklace  The Messenger of Allah  decided to go on, the men responsible for raising the howdah didn’t recognize her absence
  • 12. Cont…  She was alone in an empty place, she decided to remain where she was till they come and fetch her  While she was sleeping one of the companions “Safwan bin Al-Mu’attal” passed by her, he said: “To Allah we belong and to Him shall we return! It is the wife of the Messenger of Allah ”  She covered her face, and didn’t speak a word, he brought the camel and asked her to mount the camel but did not catch up with them till the following day
  • 13. Cont…  When they reached Madinah hypocrites accused Aisha  and Safwan   People in Madinah were divided into four groups about the story of the Slander.  The first, which was the majority, neither believed such incident nor denied what people were saying; most of them have kept to their silence.
  • 14. Reaction  People of the second group, who were a minority, strongly denied this hideous lie and could never even accept it.  For example: Abu-Ayyub Al-Ansari  was asking his wife if she would have done such a thing if she had been in Aisha’s place; She swore by Allah that she would never have done it; he told her then that Aisha would never do it too, since Aisha – being the Prophet’s wife and thus a mother to all the believers - is surely better.
  • 15. Reaction  People of the third group had nearly the same attitude as those of the first one, except that here they helped this scandal to spread.  This was either through talking a lot and even writing poetry about it, e.g. Hassan Ibn- Thabit, or through talking ill about Aisha, e.g. Mistah Ibn-Uthatha and Hamna Bint-Jahsh, who was the sister of the Prophet’s wife Zainab Bint-Jahsh and who always knew that Zainab was second favored after Aisha to the Prophet .
  • 16. Hypocrites behind the Slander  People of the fourth group, who were the reason and the origin of this whole thing to arise and then spread, were of course the hypocrites of Madinah.  It is said that the one who carried most of the slander mission was Abdullah IbnUbai Ibn- Salul.
  • 17. Aisha Situation  Aisha said that she kept weeping for two whole nights and a day continuously and could never sleep until she thought her liver would burst from weeping. The Prophet  and Aisha really suffered; besides, the Divine Revelation did not come to the Prophet  for a whole month.
  • 18. The Prophet Mohammed  Status  the Prophet  asked Barira, Aisha’s slave, if anything aroused her suspicion about Aisha. Barira denied and swore by Allah on that.  He  asked his wife Zainab the same thing, she swore that she knew nothing about Aisha except good.
  • 19.  At this point, the Prophet  felt that another step should be done. Meanwhile, he  can neither resort to violence by all means, nor can he  go to people and tell them that his wife is innocent because there is no Qur’anic ayah was revealed to support him; i.e. no tangible evidence whatsoever.
  • 20.  Anyway, the Prophet (SAWS) stood on the pulpit and faced to the people saying, “O Muslims! Who will help me against a man ( i.e. Ibn-Salul) who has hurt me by slandering my family? By Allah, I know nothing except good about my family. And people have blamed a man (i.e. Safwan) of whom I know nothing except good, and he never used to visit my family except with me”.
  • 21. Aisha Telling the Story  Aisha said, “on that day I kept on weeping Allah's Messenger came to us, greeted, and sat down. He had never sat with me since the day when what was said was said. He had stayed a month without receiving any Divine Revelation concerning my case.  "Thereafter, O 'Aisha! I have been informed such and such a thing about you; and if you are innocent, Allah will reveal your innocence, and if you have committed a sin, then ask for Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a worshiper of Allah confesses his sin and then repents to Allah, Allah accepts his repentance".
  • 22. Cont..  When Allah's Messenger finished his speech, my tears ceased completely so that I no longer felt even a drop thereof. Then I said to my father, "Reply to Allah's Messenger on my behalf as to what he said". He (i.e. her father Abu- Bakr) said, "By Allah, I do not know what to say to Allah's Messenger".
  • 23. Cont..  Then I said to my mother, "Reply to Allah's Messenger". She said, "I do not know what to say to Allah's Messenger".  Still a young girl as I was and though I had little knowledge of Qur’an. I said, "By Allah, I know that you heard you have believed it. So now, if I tell you that I am innocent, and Allah knows that I am innocent, you will not believe me; and if I confess something, and Allah knows that I am innocent of it, you will believe me.
  • 24.  By Allah, I cannot find of you an example except that of Yusuf’s father : ‫ن‬َ ‫فنو‬ُ‫نو‬ ‫ص‬ِ‫ُف‬ ‫ت‬َ ‫م ا‬َ ‫ل ى‬َ ‫ع‬َ ‫ن‬ُ‫نو‬ ‫ع ا‬َ ‫ت‬َ ‫س‬ْ‫َت‬ ‫م‬ُ‫نو‬ ‫ل‬ْ‫َت‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ه‬ُ‫نو‬ ‫ل‬ّ‫ه‬ ‫وال‬َ ‫ل‬ٌ ‫ملي‬ِ‫ُف‬ ‫ج‬َ ‫ر‬ٌ ‫ب‬ْ‫َت‬ ‫ص‬َ ‫ف‬َ  “So patience is most fitting. And it is Allah Whose Help can be sought against that (lie) which you describe”
  • 25.  Aisha continued, “Then I turned away and lay on my bed, and at that time I knew that I was innocent and that Allah would reveal my innocence. But, by Allah, I never thought that Allah would sent down a Divine Revelation that would be recited (forever), as I considered myself too unworthy to be talked of by Allah with something that was to be recited
  • 26. The Affair of the Slander  “Verily, those who brought forth the slander are a group among you. Consider it not a bad thing for you. Nay, it is good for you. To every man among them will be paid that which he had earned of the sin, and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be a great torment.”
  • 27. Leasons  Hypocrites intention to harm the Messenger of Allah by accusing his wife   Whatever harmed Aisha  would hurt him   No one should accuse any Muslim of committing adultery without evidence.  Disciplining the Believers for spreading the Slander  The punishment for the people who spread the slander.
  • 28. Aisha’s Knowledge  Scholar of Islamic Jurisprudence with a broad knowledge of Hadeeth  Urwah bin Al-Zubair said: “ I have not seen anyone with greater knowledge of Quran or its obligations or the lawful and the unlawful, or the poetry or the sayings of the Arabs or the genealogy than Aishah”  She narrated 2210 Hadeeth
