Ever get the impression that Facebook, Twitter and the like are just "for the kids"? How about us old folks, you know, people over thirty. Can we get any value out of this social networking "stuff"? Sure we can. This presentation runs through some of "the stuff" (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN), and shares some considerations for using them in a safe, effective manner, whether it is to build and promote a strong personal brand online, maintain a strong personal and professional network, or all of the above.

Beyond your studies ~ You studied X at Y. now what? HackPra, July 2018 A student's life ago, the author somehow managed to graduate. On the way, he made a lot of mistakes -- and he still does. A few people since called him 'successful', but LOL, if only they knew.... And now, the author will do another (big!) mistake: instead of hiding in shame as he probably should, he'll share his mistakes with anyone bored enough to attend, in the hope that he's the last person to ever look that dumb to commit such mistakes. If you're a genius and you know what to do in life, please skip this. Seriously. If, like the author at the time, you wonder WTF is going on with graduation, professional work and life, then hopefully you learn a few things. Maybe. Btw the author is 42 (WTF - old!). Maybe that will help to provide a few answers.

This interactive workshop shares what libraries have done to renovate their spaces and participants are expected to share their experiences. It discusses the reasons to renovate and change, different innovative methods to do such things, uses statistics and facts about why and how changing and renovating spaces can improve the collection including the forward facing books shelves, remapping layouts/moving furniture, the need for sitting, and the need for fab labs or hacker spaces. Bring photos of your library and help us brainstorm ways to improve and change our structures, hopefully all at low costs!

PF Anderson presents for OLLI-UM on February 25, 2021. Graphic Medicine describes the genre of comics and graphic novels around healthcare, as told from personal and professional perspectives. Many think of comics as for children, but that could be risky with some of these! The personal experiences described can be tender or gritty, and touch on topics such as specific conditions, social justice, dying, lived experiences, resilience. Visual aspects of storytelling take advantage of new literacies, offering insights not possible through other mediums.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
