Blackboard Analytics for Learn is a key tool within these initiatives. Analytics for Learn provides real-time data that can be used by staff in a variety of roles to support student success. This presentation will outline how JCU is adapting Analytics for Learn, including discussion of initial customisations made to 'out-of-the-box' reports and the development of personalised dashboards, as well as providing an overview of the coordinated approach to the staged 'roll-out' and adoption of reports and dashboards. Mike Larsen and Sherwin Huang led a discussion on feedback literacy and Studiosity's new 'Citation Alert' feature within Studiosity's Writing Feedback function. Explaining that rather than take on another policing role, Studiosity seeks to help the vast majority of students who don't mean to plagiarise, but perhaps do - due to anxiety, feeling rushed, feeling tired. Outcomes: Most plagiarism is unintentional, how can those students be better supported? Recommended action: Studiosity partners can switch on Citation Alert in Semester 2, 2019. This year's Studiosity 'Students First' Symposium was hosted at La Trobe University City Campus, 25 and 26 July 2019.

This mixed methods study explored racial or ethnic minority students who were enrolled in an online course to determine if there was a relationship between their online learning readiness characteristics and their outcomes across institutions. Also, minority student perceptions of what skills and experiences lead to success and how they can be better supported for online online learning is reported. Student surveys were administered using Likert and open-ended items to gather quantitative and qualitative data. Readiness characteristics included student reporting of their technology access, beliefs, and skills (technology access, online work skills, social technology skills, online efficacy), their self-efficacy (self-directedness and organization, achievement mindset, and growth mindset), and their communication (need for socialization, general communication competence, communication with instructor, and communication with peers), and student outcomes gathered included student perceptions of learning, self-reported satisfaction, and academic performance (course grade, instructor reported). Significant findings were discovered from multiple regression analyses indicating that several of these measures of readiness (online work skills, online efficacy, self-directedness and organization, communication with instructor, communication with classmates) positively influence student outcomes (learning, satisfaction, and academic performance). Qualitative findings indicate that minority students report time management, previous online course experience, and online work skills as the most prevalent themes of skills and experiences that positively influence their success. Moreover, they recommend that instructors and institutions provide them additional resources prior to the class to better prepare them to be successful, and that they receive support during the class by instructors and academic support staff. Recommendations are shared.

ABSTRACT Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs. Data driven approaches to teaching and learning are rapidly being adopted within educational environments, but there is still much confusion about what learning analytics is, what it can do, and how it is best employed. This talk will provide a general overview of the field of learning analytics, its terminology and methods, as well as contemporary ethical debates. It will also introduce several open source and Emory-supported analytics tools available to students and instructors to facilitate the achievement of various learning outcomes.

Research Objective: The SAFTINet project was funded by the AHRQ to build a distributed network of existing clinical and claims data that would support comparative effectiveness research (CER), with a focus on underserved populations and healthcare delivery system (HDS) characteristics. Observational research methods are appropriate, but require detailed protocols with a priori hypotheses and analytic plans. SAFTINet research specifically concerns the effects of a discrete set of HDS features (those often included in Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) models) on health outcomes for primary care patients with asthma, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia. Our objective is to present a description of this study’s measurement challenges, and to specify a priori hypotheses, analytic strategies, and plans for addressing bias and confounding for our asthma cohorts. Study Design: An observational, longitudinal cohort study of primary care patients with asthma, with both secondary use of existing clinical and claims data and primary data collection for HDS features and patient- reported outcomes. Population Studied: Our sample consists of 59 primary care practices in 5 healthcare organizations in Colorado, Utah and Tennessee; all practices serve underserved populations. These practices care for about 275,000 patients per year, of whom an estimated 22,000 have a diagnosis of asthma. Principal Findings: We will present the processes used to define and measure the HDS features, covariates and asthma outcomes, along with planned analysis. Challenges include valid measurement of a multi-faceted HDS “exposure” variable, the inability to identify exposure onset, and the non-dichotomous nature of HDS characteristics. To measure HDS characteristics, we created a practice-level survey assessing 9 PCMH domains, including care coordination, specialty care and mental health integration, and patient-centeredness, as well as asthma-specific HDS characteristics (e.g., the use of asthma registries). Asthma outcomes included (1) those available as a result of routine electronic documentation of clinical care and claims administration (utilization indicative of an exacerbation), and (2) patient reported outcomes tools (Asthma Control Test). We used directed acyclic graphs to identify potential confounders of the relationship between HDS characteristics and asthma control, as well as other potential biases. The analytic plan is based on linear mixed effects models. Perspectives of the CER team, the technology team and the community engagement group were considered in the operationalization of all variables. Conclusions: The design of rigorous observational CER observational CER should recognize the need for an intense planning phase. In accordance with good practice guidance for observational studies, an important component of the planning phase is to disseminate and obtain feedback on the research design in advance of its conduct.

Health Datapalooza IV: June 3rd-4th, 2013 APPS EXPO LIVE DEMOS Tuesday June 4, 2013 • 1:30pm - 5:00pm Location: Ambassador Ballroom Asthmapolis and the City of Louisville launched an innovative program to improve asthma management among residents and provide officials with valuable information about the burden of asthma. Preliminary analyses show the program significantly increased participant’s asthma free days and reduced use of their rescue inhalers. In addition, a variety of environmental exposures are associated with the development of asthma symptoms, information that can now inform the city’s public health strategy. This demo reviews the technology, shows how both City and residents put it to work and reveals our learning about its benefits for care and public health understanding of asthma.

Public Health Seminar Series - Monday, August 5, 2013 “Developing a Community of Practice to Bridge Primary Care and Public Health” Communities of Practice (CoPs) are becoming an increasingly popular tool to facilitate problem solving and identify best practices in a variety of fields. Using face to face meetings and/or online discussion boards, a CoP brings together a community of experts and novices all focused on finding evidence based and practical solutions to real world problems. Within public health the CDC hosts a web based program called phConnect to foster collaboration among geographically dispersed professionals who share a focus on specific public health problems. CDC defines a CoP as: “a group of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise by interacting on an ongoing basis.” Learning theory and research support CoPs as a mechanism for developing both professional expertise and professional identity through ongoing engagement and communal problem solving. The UTMB Public Health Program and the Primary Care Plus Program will be developing a Community of Practice using the phConnect tool (www.phConnect.org). Public health faculty and students, Primary Care Plus Scholars, and other interested parties will be invited to join a CoP focused on bridging primary care and public health to identify actions that address local and regional community health problems. In this seminar, Dr. Rudkin will describe the defining elements of a CoP and will facilitate discussion of the purpose and organization of the UTMB Primary Care and Public Health CoP. The planned CoP will have monthly face to face meetings supplemented by online discussion. Technologies will be used to facilitate synchronous participation from remote sites and for asynchronous viewing. Faculty and students will share responsibility for summarizing monthly discussions and identifying action steps.

Strategies for Developing an Academic Portfolio Academic portfolios help nursing students at all educational levels. It allows them to be set apart from others in the job market after graduation. Portfolios provide guidelines for an individual throughout the student’s educational journey, after graduation, and in their career. According to Mollahadi et al. (2018), portfolios provide the best work and show the trajectory of a learner’s educational growth. Utilization of my portfolio will provide understanding, and show advancement, and progress that has been made. It will also aid in providing further guidance on the key areas where improvement is needed and allow for self-evaluations. I will incorporate two strategies to develop my portfolio—using technology and having a social change initiative because both align with my personal goals and those of Walden University (Walden University, n.d.). One of the strategies, I will use in the development of my academic portfolio is the utilization of information technology tools. I will make the document easily shareable and accessible to receive more feedback from peers and instructors. To attain this goal, I will use digital tools to create an e-Portfolio for my accomplishments. Collins and O'Brien (2018) explain that e-portfolios that feature multimedia artifacts and hyperlinks foster interaction and encourage instructors to give positive feedback. Instructor feedback provides well-informed responses that are grounded in experience and competence; hence, it is essential for my growth as a nurse. Thus, my e-Portfolio should be interactive and accessible. In combination with coursework, I plan to initiate a social change initiative which will be part of my final school project. Having a social change will demonstrate my clinical competence and ability to apply the concepts we have learned in class and receive feedback from the society. Nurses have a social responsibility for the communities that they serve which can be linked to one of their main roles as a patient advocates. According to Phillips et al. (2020), nurses are expected to apply a holistic approach to patient care by seeking deeper insights into the root causes of illnesses, such as poverty and other social issues. I am passionate about mental health and its relationship with low socioeconomic status. Also, I would like to initiate a social initiative within the community that will focus on mental health among ethnic minorities in rural areas. This patient population with mental health issues is more likely to lack the resources and ability to access treatment, medications, and quality healthcare. I will develop a program that reaches out to them to create awareness of the importance of mental health wellness and reduce the stigma related to how society views patients with mental health issues and provide unbiased psychiatric care.
