AIMS OF ENGLISH SYLLABUS
The English syllabus aims to extend learners’ English language proficiency in order to meet their needs for English in everyday life, for
knowledge acquisition, and for future workplace needs.
OBJECTIVES OF ENGLISH SYLLABUS
By the end of Form 1, learners should be able to:
i. make friends and talk about themselves, recount experiences and also enquire about the person(s) they are talking to;
ii. make enquiries about services, make a booking/appointment, and fill in an application form;
iii. socialise with friends and in groups make plans and arrangements for joint activities;
iv. obtain information from various text-types such as articles and reports and present the information briefly to others orally and
in writing;
v. read and enjoy poems and short stories;
vi. have a positive outlook and act appropriately in social situations; and
vii. show an awareness and appreciation of moral values and love towards the nation.

BAND DESKRIPTOR
1 Know fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
2 Understand meaning at word, phrase and sentence level.
3 Use knowledge acquired through listening, speaking, reading and writing.
4 Apply knowledge acquired in a variety of situations using some appropriate language conventions.
5 Demonstrate the ability to use language in a variety of situations using largely appropriate language conventions.
6 Appreciate literary works and present ideas critically in an exemplary manner.

KEMAHIRAN BAND DESKRIPTOR

Ask simple questions politely to obtain information and respond to questions appropriately.

Listen and respond to a wide range of texts, by recognizing messages in the text.

Exchange ideas and give opinions on topics of interest with less prompts using correct language
conventions in a face-to-face situation.

Give opinions on topics of interest in public with confidence. Participate confidently in conversations
and discussions.

filling in the blanks adequately, using contextual clues adequately, find meanings of unfamiliar
words from a variety of sources.

Read a variety of texts to obtain information by filling in the blanks adequately , sufficiently find
meanings of unfamiliar words from a variety of sources and using contextual clues, correctly
identifying main ideas, supporting details, and cause and effect relationships.

writing conventions and vocabulary.

conventions, vocabulary and creativity.

Produce a good piece of writing expressing one’s opinions with some creativity, using a wide
range of sentence patterns, writing conventions and vocabulary.

Produce a creative and interesting piece of writing expressing one’s opinions and thoughts
creatively using a good variety of sentence patterns, writing conventions and an excellent range of
vocabulary.

BAHASA INGGERIS TINGKATAN 1 2 AIMS OF ENGLISH SYLLABUS The English syllabus aims to extend learners’ English language proficiency in order to meet their needs for English in everyday life, for knowledge acquisition, and for future workplace needs. OBJECTIVES OF ENGLISH SYLLABUS By the end of Form 1, learners should be able to: i. make friends and talk about themselves, recount experiences and also enquire about the person(s) they are talking to; ii. make enquiries about services, make a booking/appointment, and fill in an application form; iii. socialise with friends and in groups make plans and arrangements for joint activities; iv. obtain information from various text-types such as articles and reports and present the information briefly to others orally and in writing; v. read and enjoy poems and short stories; vi. have a positive outlook and act appropriately in social situations; and vii. show an awareness and appreciation of moral values and love towards the nation.

BAHASA INGGERIS TINGKATAN 1 3 BAND DESKRIPTOR 1 Know fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. 2 Understand meaning at word, phrase and sentence level. 3 Use knowledge acquired through listening, speaking, reading and writing. 4 Apply knowledge acquired in a variety of situations using some appropriate language conventions. 5 Demonstrate the ability to use language in a variety of situations using largely appropriate language conventions. 6 Appreciate literary works and present ideas critically in an exemplary manner.
  • 4. BAHASA INGGERIS TINGKATAN 1 4 KEMAHIRAN BAND DESKRIPTOR Lisan 1 Ask simple questions politely to obtain information and respond to questions appropriately. Listen to and discriminate homophones. 2 Introduce oneself briefly using suggested sentence patterns. Listen to and discriminate homographs. 3 Talk about self, family and friends correctly and display understanding when others talk about themselves. Listen and respond to texts and recall main ideas. 4 Discuss an unfamiliar topic with some prompts using language functions appropriately. Listen and respond to a wide range of texts, by recognizing messages in the text. 5 Exchange ideas and give opinions on topics of interest with less prompts using correct language conventions in a face-to-face situation. BAHASA INGGERIS TINGKATAN 1 6 SKILL BAND DESCRIPTOR Tulis 1 Write a few simple sentences but lack accuracy. 2 Express some ideas in simple sentences, using basic vocabulary with very minimal use of writing conventions. 3 Write a simple text expressing one’s opinions using simple sentence patterns with sufficient use of writing conventions and vocabulary. 4 Write a text expressing one’s opinions with a fair amount of sentence patterns, writing conventions, vocabulary and creativity. 5 Produce a good piece of writing expressing one’s opinions with some creativity, using a wide range of sentence patterns, writing conventions and vocabulary. 6 Produce a creative and interesting piece of writing expressing one’s opinions and thoughts creatively using a good variety of sentence patterns, writing conventions and an excellent range of vocabulary.
