Physicians Mutual, a 117-year-old Nebraska-based insurance company, had worked on modernizing its systems for over a decade. In such a complex industry, any IT refresh can seem like a never-ending journey. The existing application architecture made it difficult to scale or refresh applications individually. Everything was bundled, forcing the IT team to take a "one size fits all" approach that limited legacy modernization and business agility. To "untie" the bundle and create a more agile and responsive environment, the IT team determined that containerization and Dev/Ops were the answer. In 2017, the company piloted a microservice architecture and an automated pipeline on Docker Engine (CE) to deliver the new corporate API. Following the successful pilot, the company relaunched 11 mission critical services on Docker Enterprise, paving the way for a complete transformation of the company's application architecture. This talk will walk through the critical parts of a tool chain that forms the service delivery platform, a robust, secure solution with Jenkins as the main orchestrator that scales with many teams and hundreds of pipelines. I will show a tool chain with Git, Jenkins, Jenkins Job Builder, Puppet, Graphite, Logstash and more that is proven in battle. I will share insights and details on good ways of building a platform for pipelines that recognizes the individual teams needs for fast feedback, traceability and visibility in the delivery process.

Watson developer cloud delivers Watson Cognitive services as micro services on the cloud that are being used by many IBM Watson customers. The micro services were packaged in ova at the first release. There were some drawbacks in ova deployment in the cloud. We gradually switched to use docker. As a result, the service deployment time and start up time are significantly improved. It also greatly simplified our continuous delivery process since our services run on both Intel and Power platform and we have offerings on our public cloud, dedicated cloud as well as customers’ on premise cloud. With minimal deployment time and quick startup time, Docker makes our dynamic creation of service instance on the fly per customer request possible.

With the rapid advancements in the cloud computing techniques and growing maturity of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) in the DevOps space, attaining a zero downtime while deploying the latest updates to the applications and databases, has become a new norm in the IT industry. Blue-Green deployment model is a DevOps technique which helps to achieve a zero downtime by seamlessly switching to new version(green) when it is fully ready while the original version (blue) is still running. Making duplicate copies of entire cloud infrastructure at a rapid pace is only possible when it is written as code, rather than manually configured. Terraform is a declarative programming language which helps in writing infrastructure as code.In this session -1.We will provision a new AWS VPC, public and private subnets and security groups using Terraform code.2. We will then create a Document DB cluster from scratch and create a new DB using snapshot, by running the Terraform.3. We will then demonstrate the creation of an AWS Fargate based ECS cluster using Terraform script and then run a java based micro service on it, that uses AWS Document DB as the NoSQL database. 4. We will then simulate the Blue Green deployment model by creating an AWS Lambda function which deploys the latest updates and rolls back to the older version with zero downtime.

DevOps has been an emerging trend in the software development world for the past several years. While the term is relatively new, it is really a convergence of a number of practices that have been evolving for decades. Unfortunately, database development has been left out of much of this movement, but that's starting to change. As database professionals, we all need to understand what this important change is about, how we fit in, and how to best work database development practices into the established DevOps practices. One of the cornerstones of the DevOps methodology is source control. When most people think of source control, they picture a tool - either a traditional, centralized system like TFS, or a newer, distributed system like Git. Source control is more than a tool, though; human processes and practices also play a critical role in an effective source control (and DevOps) implementation. In this session, we'll talk in depth about both types of source control systems and how you can effectively use source control for your databases.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
