scientific research, internationalization and
financing, as well as strengthen cooperation
between the two universities, which have had
a collaboration agreement since 2011.
In the meeting held in the Rectors Hall of the
University Cultural Center, José Williams
presented the four strategic axes of the
Institutional Development Plan: quality
integral education; knowledge generation
and application; linking; and responsible
management; as well as the three transversal
axes: internationalization, innovation and
social responsibility.
Similarly, he noted that, with this meeting,
the possibility of creating links that
strengthen the educational and academic
areas, working groups and research to
address issues of relevance and interest for
both institutions, is opened.
For his part, Ruff Escobar spoke about the
institution he represents, which teaches 27
undergraduate courses, through its four
faculties: Social Sciences; Engineering,
Science and Technology; and Education and
Health.
In that sense, he said that it is a young

9. PRESERVATION OF ANCESTRAL KNOWLEDGE
IN A GUIDE
Mérida, Yucatán, September 18, 2019.- Traditional Mayan doctors and professors of the Autonomous University
of Yucatan (UADY), put together the “Apprentice Guide”, a document to revalue the place of these health experts
within their community , as well as preserving ancestral knowledge and inviting new generations to continue with
this profession.
The "Apprentice Guide" brings together the set of knowledge that traditional doctors consider essential to transmit
to the next generation, because in recent times it is not of interest to young people since doctors do not have
apprentices.
These works were carried out as part of the social project "Revaluation of traditional Mayan medicine in the south
of the Yucatan Peninsula", with contributions jointly by traditional doctors from Tahdziú, Peto and Tzucacab,
including Carmen Díaz and Patenurcio Pool, among others, as well as students and professors of UADY’s School of
Medicine.
The form of education was that students lived with their teacher, in order to know everything related to their
knowledge directly, in addition to collaborating in daily activities.
Among the actions carried out during the project, participants were trained to have a fair income for their services
and their products, in such a way that traditional doctors optimized their production, distribution and storage of
the remedies, explained the head of this social project, Russell Arcila Novelo.
The products they make are remedies that are popularly used for the treatment of various diseases, such as
creams, ointments, teas, to name a few; while the services they provide range from sobados (rubs), massages, bone
accommodation and other ritual types.
The importance of the traditional doctor in the community is that patients can have quality care within reach,
since in some communities it is difficult to access this service, and this knowledge can be complemented with
Western medicine.
The project was carried out for four years in the towns of Tahdziú, Peto and Tzucacab.
10. STRENGTHENING COLLABORATION TIES WITH THE
UNIVERSITY OF CHINA

in creating collaborative ties for the promotion and dissemination of Mayan culture in China, in the framework
of the visit they made to the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY). The president of the Chinese
educational institution, Cheng Daopin, explained that the objective of this first approach was to establish
agreements on specific issues between both universities, such as Mayan culture, tourism, hospitality and
international business.
Before UADY authorities gathered in the Rectors Hall of the University Cultural Center, the president said that
Guilin University was founded in 1985, and currently has nine thousand students from different parts of China.

recognized as UADY”. He also expressed interest in establishing exchanges with academics, and that this be
extended to students and researchers of the two universities. He added that they can share experiences, ideas,
promote mobility and joint work between different research groups and academic bodies.
For his part, the rector of UADY, José de Jesús Williams, emphasized the importance of strengthening ties of
collaboration and stressed, in a special way, the increase of opportunities for students and teachers of both
institutions to participate in the various mobility programs. "In addition to learning the language, be it Mandarin
or Spanish, knowledge of Mexican and Chinese science and culture is essential," said the rector, who stressed
interest in exploring areas of knowledge of mutual interest.
During his visit the president gave the conference "Tourism in China" to students and professors of Tourism, and

of prisoners or released persons to civil society organizations that allow them to fully reintegrate into society, as
well as sell the products they make within the social rehabilitation centers.
"Cassiopeia", meanwhile, is a website that aims to help people with disabilities have the same rights of access to
higher education, so that on that page they can find opportunities to enter universities, among other information
elements.
These two initiatives are supported by the director of the UADY School of Engineering, José Ángel Méndez
Gamboa.

14. UADY´S PLANT NURSERY: AN IMPORTANT REFUGE FOR
NATIVE SPECIES
Mérida, Yucatán, November 11, 2019.- More than 96 species of
plants, with approximately five thousand specimens, are part of
the flora that is preserved and reproduced in the Institutional
Plant Nursery of Native Species of the Autonomous University of
Yucatan (UADY) , located on the Campus of Social, Economic-
Administrative Sciences and Humanities.
With this initiative, the maximum house of studies contributes to
the conservation of biodiversity and the fight against climate
change, since it provides the vegetation with which the different
university campuses are reforested to reduce greenhouse gases
and also relieve up to five degrees Celsius the temperature at the
hottest times of the year.
This is how this university space has become a refuge and
reproductive center for the different native species, among them
the “kiik” or tree of the Mayan rubber, which make up the
botanical wealth of the Yucatan Peninsula, said the head of the
Institutional Plant Nursery and UADY Energy Efficiency
Coordinator, Fernando Herrera Gómez.
Through the reforestation program implemented at UADY, he
added, 1,400 plants have been planted during the last four years in
different faculties and preparatory schools of this house of studies,
and this second semester of the year began the planting of
approximately 900 trees on the Campus of Social, Economic
Administrative Sciences and Humanities.
In addition, the Plant Nursery is used at UADY in the teaching-learning process, as students and researchers carry
out activities related to their educational work in the different careers of the different Campus, according to the
Educational Model for Integral Training implemented in the university ,explained Herrera Gómez.“It is an
authentic living museum, a center for conservation and reproduction of the Yucatecan flora, which also attract a
large number of birds that seek to feed and nest in their branches and also carry out research on different qualities
of plants in the region” commented Denis Marrufo Zapata, who is part of the team involved in the project.
Its conformation has involved important rescue actions, such as those undertaken by Salvador Flores Guido and a
team of collaborators, who have managed to rescue very important species of this flora, among them is the Mayan
rubber tree (Elastic Castile), known by the Maya with the name of “kiik”, a very important plant in their culture,
since the balls with which the ball game was made in the ceremonial centers were made of their latex.Other rescued
and important species in the Mayan area are: the cucumber kat (Parmentiera aculeata), which is almost not
consumed and cultivated, the balché(Lonchocarpus longistylus), which is a sacred tree from whose bark fermented
inmelipona honey the sacred drink of the same name used in the prayers to the god Cha'ak, in which rain was
implored in the days of cannula or drought so that the cornfield flourished and did not dry out. These species
mentioned along with others, such as Ku´umche or Bonete (MexicanJacaratia), Yaxnik (Vitex gaumeri), K´anasín
(Lonchocarpus rugosus), Choch(Pouteria glomerata), and Kanisté (Pouteria campechiana), are distributed on the
sides of the plant nursery trails so that visitors can appreciate them. It also contains other important species such as
palms and cacti, and also has medicinal plants, such as chaká (Bursera simaruba), which in Mesoamerica is one of
the most used to treat various ailments and diseases such as stomach aches, headaches, burns , urinary diseases and
diarrhea. There are honey plants such as the ts´iisilche (Gymnopodium floribundum) that produces the best honey
from Yucatan.
