Part V: Read the following passage carefully, and then choose ONE best option (A,B,C or D) to
complete each sentence. ( 5 ms)
Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of
communication Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of
oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign
language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute
have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of the whole words are
very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally, spelling, however, cannot. Body
language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A
wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies
approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots
read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture
signs also guide, warm, and instruct people.
While verbalization is most common form of language, other systems and techniques
also express human thoughts and feelings.

A. When language is a barrier, people will find other forms of communication
B. Everybody uses only one form of communication

A combination of sewage, salt, air pollution, sun, sand and wind may destroy the huge
statue on the outskirts of Cairo. This statue of the sun god has the body of a lion and the face of a
human being. It is five thousand years old, but it is too badly damaged to be completely saved.
3
The statue has already been dug out of the sad three times. However, the latest problems are
much more serious. First, there are no proper drains and water pipes in the neighborhood and the
underground passages round the statue have become blocked. Too much water has been running
into the stone statue for several years. As a result, tiny pieces of salt have been left on the stone and
have damaged it.
Secondly, air pollution from the increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient
statue. The air is so full of poisonous gases that it is making the stone crumble and decay even
faster.
Thirdly, the statue is being damaged by extremes of temperature. For example, although
the air is very cold at night, during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the
strong sun. Other natural forces such as serve sandstorms also attack the statue.
Finally, the tourists who visit the statue everyday also cause a lot of damage.
1. The statue is in the center of Cairo.
2. Part of the statue looks like a lion and part like a person.
3. The underground passages round the statue are full of waste and water.
4. High temperatures damage stone far more than low temperature.
5. Fortunately, little damage is caused by visitors to the statue.

Paragraph 0:
Imagine for a moment, spending the night on board a large yacht, being roughly
woken in the pitch dark and ordered on deck. Every so often you will be totally drenched, very
suddenly, in salt water. You will be sharing the same cramped space with 14 other people for a
whole year. Your stomach, when not affected by seasickness, will be hit by the competitive
4
tension and nervousness that afflicts all sportspeople. You will be obliged to concentrate without
cease. The slightest loss of focus could cost someone their life.
Paragraph 1:
For the eight crews taking part in the Round-the-world yachting race, this has been
daily life since they left Britain eleven months ago. Now, after racing 50,000 across kilometers of
ocean, they are soon due home. While most of us have worked, slept, taken a holiday, these crews
have sailed and sailed, day after day, night after night, in weather conditions that would test any
human. This is the reality of ocean yacht racing, which bears little resemblance to the popular
image of sailing- the quick sprint around a lake before returning ashore for a meal and a warm
bath.
Paragraph 2:
Racing 20-metre yachts around the world is a story of unrelenting hard work, pushing
yourself to the limits of endurance. But it is also a story of the vastness and beauty of the sea, of
seeing the sun rise and set on hundreds of desolate horizons, and of the supreme satisfaction of
arriving somewhere knowing that wind alone has taken you there.
Paragraph 3:
Unlike the captains, who are professional sailors, the crews all consist of amateur
volunteers who have actually paid for the privilege of taking a year off from their work and
enduring these difficult conditions. On board London Light the ages range from 21 to 65. For the
youngest member, Susan Porter, the trip is about the excitement of both the racing and the
elements ‘Being able to pitch yourselves as a team against a storm gives you a huge sense of
achievement’, she says
Paragraph 4:
Jerry Wallace, a marketing director, found sailing a refreshing change from the selfish
individualism of business. Although he was prepared for the discomfort, the mental stress of long
distance racing was not what he has anticipated, ‘A grand Prix driver has a few hours of focus, a
footballer 90 minutes, but we have been racing for 11 months. This is something I didn’t really
appreciate before I start.’
Paragraph 5:
Inevitably, there are tensions. The kind of people who choose to take part in races
like this tend to motivated and strong-willed. On a trivial level, there are the usual arguments
about things like cleaning, tidying, personal hygiene, even the way people snore. Row on a boat
must be addressed immediately. Left to develop, they get much worse. On London Light they have
done this by having a meeting where problems can be discussed and resolved by majority vote.
Cooperation is the key, and everyone can have their say. The London is one of the few boats that
has never lost any crew early because of a personality clash.

I read several studies about dating. In one American study, the researchers asked a
large number of college students about arranging a date. They focused on dates arranged by
women (see Table 1). (1) ……………………….. the students preferred hints. In a hint, for
example, the woman mentions that she has noticed something about the man or seen him
somewhere. If he talks to her, she can pay (2) ……………………….. attention to him and
act as if he is very interesting. Then maybe she can say that she’d like to talk to him again.
These types of hints were preferred by about (3) ……………………….. the students.
About a third of the women said they wanted to wait for the man to ask. But only
17
three per cent of the men wanted that. This means that almost (4) ……………………….. as
many women as men think that this is a good idea. Such a large difference suggests that a
lot of women are waiting and hoping for something that very (5) ………………………..
men will do. This may be one of the (6) ……………………….. reasons why students think
it is hard to get a date.
Another reason may be their different opinions about asking directly. “Asking
directly” was chosen by the (7) ……………………….. women. More men, almost (8)
……………………….. them, liked this approach. In fact, in another study I read, (9)
……………………….. college men said that if they were asked directly, they would say
“Yes.” An example of asking directly was: “I have some tickets for a concert. Would you
like to go with me?” In my opinion, this example may not provide reliable evidence about
dating. The man may want to go to the concert and say, “Yes,” but he may not like the
woman. Is this a date? I don’t think so. I believe that we need (10) ………………………..
these studies to find out if men and women define “date” in the same way.
Table 1
If a woman is interested in going on a date with a man, the best thing for her to do is
………….
Men agree Women agree
........... ask him directly 30% 2%
………. give him a hint 67% 63%
……….. wait for him to ask

A. Before ozone existed
B. Repair gets slower
C. People ignore warnings
D. Ozone hole a certainty
E. The future is our responsibility
F. The function of the ozone layer
G. Delay reactions
H. Humans to blame
Strange results
In September 1982, Dr. Joe Farman, a British scientist working in the Antarctic, found
that a dramatic change had taken place in the atmosphere above his research station on
the ice continent. His instrument, set up to measure the amounts of a chemical called
ozone in the atmosphere, seemed to go wild. Over just a few days they recorded that half
the ozone had disappeared.
0 D
He couldn’t believe his eyes, so he came back to Britain to get a new instrument to check
his findings. But when he returned the following year at the same time, the same thing
happened. He had discovered a hole in the ozone layer- an invisible shield in the upper
atmosphere- that turned out to extend over an area of the sky as wide as the United States
and as deep as Mount Everest is high. When he published his findings in scientific
journals, they caused a sensation. Scientists blamed pollution for causing the ozone hole.
1
The ozone layer is between 15 and 40 kilometres up in the atmosphere, higher than most
aero planes fly. This region contains most of the atmosphere’s ozone, which is a special
form of the gas oxygen.. Ozone has the unique ability to stop certain dangerous invisible
rays from the sun from reaching the Earth’s surface- rather like a pair of sunglasses filters
out bright sunlight. These rays are known as ultra-violet radiation. This damages living
cells, causing sunburn and more serious diseases. The ozone layer is vital to life on the
surface of the Earth.
2
Until the ozone layer formed, about two thousand million years ago, it was impossible for
any living thing to survive on the surface of the planet. All life was deep in the oceans.
But once oxygen was formed in the air, and some of that oxygen turned to ozone, plants
and animals could begin to move on to land.
3
But now humans are damaging the ozone layer for the first time. In the past ten years,
19
scientists have discovered that some man-made gases, used in everything from
refrigerators and aerosols to fire extinguishers, and floating up into the ozone layer and
destroying the ozone. The most common of these gases are called chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs).
4
The damage is worst over Antarctica, and near the North Pole, where scientists have
seen small holes appear for a short time each spring since 1989. So far, these holes have
healed up again within a few weeks by natural processes in the atmosphere that create
more ozone. But each year, it seems to take longer for the healing to be completed. Also,
all round the planet, there now seems to be less ozone in the ozone layer than even a few
years ago.
5
The first new international law to stop people making or using CFCs was the Montreal
Protocol, agreed by most of the world’s governments in 1987, Since then, there have
been new controls on other chemicals that destroy ozone. The problem is that it takes
roughly eight years for CFCs, which are released when an old fridge is broken up, to
reach the ozone layer. That is why, despite all the cuts, ozone holes were deeper than ever
around both the North and South Poles in 1993. Amounts of CFCs in the atmosphere will
continue to rise for anther five years, say scientists.
6
Every year, the atmosphere will attempt to repair damage to the ozone layer caused by
our pollution. But we are stretching its capacity to recover to the limit. If we stop using
all ozone-destroying chemicals within the next five years, it is likely to be at least the
middle of the 21st
century before the ozone hole stops forming over Antarctica each year.
And, if we are to survive, we all have to face the problem now.

Part V: Read the following passage carefully, and then choose ONE best option (A,B,C or D) to complete each sentence. ( 5 ms) Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of the whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally, spelling, however, cannot. Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warm, and instruct people. While verbalization is most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings. 1. Which of the following best summarizes this passage? A. When language is a barrier, people will find other forms of communication B. Everybody uses only one form of communication C. Sign language is said to be very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally EXCEPT for ………………………………….. A. spelling B. ideas C. whole words D. expressions Part VI: Read the following passage carefully, and then decide whether the following statements are True (T), False (F) or No Given (N) . (5 ms) A combination of sewage, salt, air pollution, sun, sand and wind may destroy the huge statue on the outskirts of Cairo. This statue of the sun god has the body of a lion and the face of a human being. It is five thousand years old, but it is too badly damaged to be completely saved.
  • 3. 3 The statue has already been dug out of the sad three times. However, the latest problems are much more serious. First, there are no proper drains and water pipes in the neighborhood and the underground passages round the statue have become blocked. Too much water has been running into the stone statue for several years. As a result, tiny pieces of salt have been left on the stone and have damaged it. Secondly, air pollution from the increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is so full of poisonous gases that it is making the stone crumble and decay even faster. Thirdly, the statue is being damaged by extremes of temperature. For example, although the air is very cold at night, during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sun. Part VII: Give the correct form of the words in brackets. Every so often you will be totally drenched, very suddenly, in salt water. You will be sharing the same cramped space with 14 other people for a whole year. Your stomach, when not affected by seasickness, will be hit by the competitive
  • 4. 4 tension and nervousness that afflicts all sportspeople. You will be obliged to concentrate without cease. The slightest loss of focus could cost someone their life. Paragraph 1: For the eight crews taking part in the Round-the-world yachting race, this has been daily life since they left Britain eleven months ago. Now, after racing 50,000 across kilometers of ocean, they are soon due home. While most of us have worked, slept, taken a holiday, these crews have sailed and sailed, day after day, night after night, in weather conditions that would test any human. This is the reality of ocean yacht racing, which bears little resemblance to the popular image of sailing- the quick sprint around a lake before returning ashore for a meal and a warm bath. Paragraph 2: Racing 20-metre yachts around the world is a story of unrelenting hard work, pushing yourself to the limits of endurance. But it is also a story of the vastness and beauty of the sea, of seeing the sun rise and set on hundreds of desolate horizons, and of the supreme satisfaction of arriving somewhere knowing that wind alone has taken you there. Paragraph 3: Unlike the captains, who are professional sailors, the crews all consist of amateur volunteers who have actually paid for the privilege of taking a year off from their work and enduring these difficult conditions. On board London Light the ages range from 21 to 65. For the youngest member, Susan Porter, the trip is about the excitement of both the racing and the elements ‘Being able to pitch yourselves as a team against a storm gives you a huge sense of achievement’, she says Paragraph 4: Jerry Wallace, a marketing director, found sailing a refreshing change from the selfish individualism of business. Although he was prepared for the discomfort, the mental stress of long distance racing was not what he has anticipated, ‘A grand Prix driver has a few hours of focus, a footballer 90 minutes, but we have been racing for 11 months. This is something I didn’t really appreciate before I start.’ Paragraph 5: Inevitably, there are tensions. The kind of people who choose to take part in races like this tend to motivated and strong-willed. On a trivial level, there are the usual arguments about things like cleaning, tidying, personal hygiene, even the way people snore. Row on a boat must be addressed immediately. Left to develop, they get much worse. On London Light they have done this by having a meeting where problems can be discussed and resolved by majority vote. Cooperation is the key, and everyone can have their say. The London is one of the few boats that has never lost any crew early because of a personality clash. Part IX : Choose one sentence that has the most similar meaning to the original one(5ms) 1: “ Shall I make you a cup of tea ?” A. Mary wanted to make me a cup of tea. B. He is alleged to take part in the robbery. B. The police suspect him of taking part in the robbery. C. He is thought to be one of the robbery. D. In one American study, the researchers asked a large number of college students about arranging a date. They focused on dates arranged by women (see Table 1). (1) ……………………….. the students preferred hints. In a hint, for example, the woman mentions that she has noticed something about the man or seen him somewhere. If he talks to her, she can pay (2) ……………………….. attention to him and act as if he is very interesting. Then maybe she can say that she’d like to talk to him again. These types of hints were preferred by about (3) ……………………….. the students. About a third of the women said they wanted to wait for the man to ask. But only

Such a large difference suggests that a lot of women are waiting and hoping for something that very (5) ……………………….. men will do. This may be one of the (6) ……………………….. reasons why students think it is hard to get a date. Another reason may be their different opinions about asking directly. “Asking directly” was chosen by the (7) ……………………….. women. More men, almost (8) ……………………….. them, liked this approach. In fact, in another study I read, (9) ……………………….. college men said that if they were asked directly, they would say “Yes.” An example of asking directly was: “I have some tickets for a concert. Would you like to go with me?” In my opinion, this example may not provide reliable evidence about dating. The man may want to go to the concert and say, “Yes,” but he may not like the woman. Is this a date? I don’t think so. I believe that we need (10) ……………………….. these studies to find out if men and women define “date” in the same way. Table 1 If a woman is interested in going on a date with a man, the best thing for her to do is …………. Men agree Women agree ........... ask him directly 30% 2% ………. give him a hint 67% 63% ……….. wait for him to ask her 3% 35% Question 3. Before ozone existed B. Repair gets slower C. People ignore warnings D. Ozone hole a certainty E. The future is our responsibility F. The function of the ozone layer G. Delay reactions H. Humans to blame Strange results In September 1982, Dr. Joe Farman, a British scientist working in the Antarctic, found that a dramatic change had taken place in the atmosphere above his research station on the ice continent. His instrument, set up to measure the amounts of a chemical called ozone in the atmosphere, seemed to go wild. Over just a few days they recorded that half the ozone had disappeared. 0 D He couldn’t believe his eyes, so he came back to Britain to get a new instrument to check his findings. But when he returned the following year at the same time, the same thing happened. He had discovered a hole in the ozone layer- an invisible shield in the upper atmosphere- that turned out to extend over an area of the sky as wide as the United States and as deep as Mount Everest is high. When he published his findings in scientific journals, they caused a sensation. Scientists blamed pollution for causing the ozone hole. 1 The ozone layer is between 15 and 40 kilometres up in the atmosphere, higher than most aero planes fly. This region contains most of the atmosphere’s ozone, which is a special form of the gas oxygen.. Ozone has the unique ability to stop certain dangerous invisible rays from the sun from reaching the Earth’s surface- rather like a pair of sunglasses filters out bright sunlight. These rays are known as ultra-violet radiation. This damages living cells, causing sunburn and more serious diseases. The ozone layer is vital to life on the surface of the Earth. 2 Until the ozone layer formed, about two thousand million years ago, it was impossible for any living thing to survive on the surface of the planet. All life was deep in the oceans. But once oxygen was formed in the air, and some of that oxygen turned to ozone, plants and animals could begin to move on to land. 3 But now humans are damaging the ozone layer for the first time. In the past ten years,
  • 19. 19 scientists have discovered that some man-made gases, used in everything from refrigerators and aerosols to fire extinguishers, and floating up into the ozone layer and destroying the ozone. The most common of these gases are called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). 4 The damage is worst over Antarctica, and near the North Pole, where scientists have seen small holes appear for a short time each spring since 1989. So far, these holes have healed up again within a few weeks by natural processes in the atmosphere that create more ozone. But each year, it seems to take longer for the healing to be completed. Also, all round the planet, there now seems to be less ozone in the ozone layer than even a few years ago. 5 The first new international law to stop people making or using CFCs was the Montreal Protocol, agreed by most of the world’s governments in 1987, Since then, there have been new controls on other chemicals that destroy ozone. The problem is that it takes roughly eight years for CFCs, which are released when an old fridge is broken up, to reach the ozone layer. That is why, despite all the cuts, ozone holes were deeper than ever around both the North and South Poles in 1993. Amounts of CFCs in the atmosphere will continue to rise for anther five years, say scientists. 6 Every year, the atmosphere will attempt to repair damage to the ozone layer caused by our pollution. But we are stretching its capacity to recover to the limit. If we stop using all ozone-destroying chemicals within the next five years, it is likely to be at least the middle of the 21st century before the ozone hole stops forming over Antarctica each year. And, if we are to survive, we all have to face the problem now. SECTION FOUR: WRITING (12 pts.) Question 1.
