Mezirow's theory of transformational learning involves 5 main steps and 10 phases of transformation. The 5 steps are: 1) identifying assumptions, 2) understanding their origins, 3) questioning their meaning, 4) developing alternative behaviors, and 5) meaningful reflection. The 10 phases involve experiencing a dilemma, self-examination, critical assessment of assumptions, exploring new roles and actions, planning a course, acquiring new skills, trying new roles, building self-confidence, and reintegrating new perspectives. The process involves recognizing, analyzing, and deliberately changing assumptions through rational discourse and reflection.

Hello everyone: Today I will be presenting one of the adult learning theories to you. This theory originated with jack Mezirow and it is called the Theory of Transformational learning.
Discuss definition
Introduction for 5 main steps
These are the five main ideas/steps that lead to transformational learning. There are more details included under each idea.
You must identify assumptions because this will be the source of your transformation. Sometimes these are hard to identify because they have been a part of who we are for so long and we don’t realize their place in our lives.
Think about the assumption (s) that were identified and analyze it thoroughly. Why was this idea or behavior created and why have we continued to carry it with us. What comfort or displeasure does it offer to us on a personal level? There is a reason this has remained with us for so long.
When you accepted this assumption as a part of you, what did it mean to you? Look deep inside of you and think about what it really means to you now? This meaning is a part of why you continue to hold on to the assumption.
It’s okay to let these ideas and behaviors go in order to adopt new ones that will serve you better in your life. Take the knowledge of the previous assumption and make a decision to do things in a different way – one that will be more helpful to you in your life.
Discuss 5 main steps vs. 10 major phases that a person goes into and out of through the process.
There are 10 major phases of transformational learning that a person goes through during the transformation process.
Think about each of these phases. You must have a disorienting dilemma that causes a shake-up in your life in order for you to begin the entire process of transformational learning. Often while we are examining our beliefs, we feel shame or guilt because we begin to see these beliefs (assumptions) for what they really. We realize that these assumptions are unrealistic or not useful to us in our present lives.
