During wartime and periods of conflict, some governments and groups have engaged in agricultural sabotage and bioterrorism by poisoning livestock and food sources. Examples include German agents poisoning horses in World War I, Japan using disease to target enemies in the 1930s, the Arab Revolutionary Council poisoning Israeli oranges in 1979, and a religious cult poisoning salad bars in Oregon in 1984 in an attempt to influence an election. Such acts are intended to disrupt trade, agriculture, and populations.
