● Two ultrasonic transducers (sensors) are
installed to the outside pipe wall sending
and receiving ultrasonic pulses
● The signals travel with and against the
direction of the flow
● When there is no flow, both signals arrive
without transit-time delay
● A moving fluid will result in a transit-time
difference between both signals
● The measured transit-time difference is
directly proportional to the flow velocity
● In combination with pipe and medium
parameters other measurement units
are determined
Transit-time method: The “rowing boat principle”
● The ultrasonic pulse -ab- crosses the pipe
quicker with the flow than signal -ba-,
which is sent against the flow
● Applicable for all acoustically conductive
liquids regardless of their electrical
conductivity

Clamp-on sensors for the KATflow series
● Sensor heads manufactured of stainless steel

Ideally both bars are filled up to the same length and as
far to the right as possible.
By moving the sensors on the
pipe, the line between the two
signal bars is moved into a
central position above the
central indication line
underneath the lower bar.
The more central the line is positioned, the better the signal-
to-noise ratio and signal quality.
