2. According to Siemens and Tittenberger “planning the effective use of
technology for learning requires a careful evaluation of context,
determining depth of technology integration, attributes of technologies
planned for use and suitability to subject matter and evaluating planned
technologies against principles of learning” (Siemens & Tittenberger, p.
35-36, 2009).

Learning”. March 2009. http://elearnspace.org/Articles/HETL.pdf.
3. About five years ago my former university instructor asked me if I wanted to
participate in the creation of Notebook lessons for Smart Boards. I would be
using Critical Thinking Consortium’s (TC2) paper based lessons and transforming
them into interactive Notebook lessons. I thought this sounded interesting, as I
was familiar with Critical Thinking Consortium, Notebook and Smart Boards.
I EXPERIENCED…
a lack of clear
vision or
guidance in
what was
expected
a lack of
communication
from the leader
of the
implementation
no research to
base our lessons
on
zero follow
through on
implementation
4. I FEEL…
Teacher access to
technology
A lack of
communication
from the leader of
the
implementation
Student access to
technology
Software
availability
Some of the other
challenges that may
stand in my way of
implementing
emerging
technologies are:
Actual
educational
benefits of using
the technology
Student’s lack of
technology skills
Finding ways to
use technology in
the place of paper
and pencil
5. MY ADVICE…
When implementing any new
technology there should be a
clear and concise focus and
goal in mind. If communication
is not made a priority the
“implementees” will become
discouraged and potentially
abandon the technology.
6. I WILL…
Providing support from
specialists in the area of focus
and time to explore, experiment
and learn the new technology
before implementing it is also a
key factor to success.
Participants in the
implementation of the
technology will clearly know who
they can ask for help and won’t
feel a sense of abandonment
after the initial steps in the
process.
Inspire others to initiate and
implement sustainable
integration of powerful emerging
technologies by:
Having a set plan and goal in
mind when working with others
or alone in trying a new
technology with students.
Once an emerging technology
has been implemented it is
imperative that feedback from all
involved is given.
A set plan will help give purpose
to the endeavor.
This is where drawbacks can be
found and fixed as a group and
will hopefully help in the
avoidance of frustration and
abandonment of the technology
from teachers.
7. I CAN…
SELECT APPS THAT FIT MY DEVELOPING PHILOSOPHY OF
EDUCATION
Choose a learning outcome.
Determine if the app chosen will meet the needs of several learners.
Determine if the app is inclusive of all learners.
•Determine the amount of participants the app can handle at one time.
Determine if the app is user friendly.
Determine if students are able to navigate successfully and follow the
instructions.
Determine if students are motivated to use the app.
When students remember a particular app and ask for it each time
they are using the iPad then it is clear that the app is a success!
I have created a checklist to use when deciding which educational apps meet my criteria for use.
Please find it here
8. I BELIEVE…
1. Through my experience of
researching and identifying emerging
technologies such as wearable
technology, tablet computing and
eBooks I now have a broader sense of
how to implement these types of
technology.
2. Furthermore now that I have
discovered and researched potential
challenges of implementing emerging
technologies I know what to be
aware of and to avoid when trying
new technology not only with my
own teaching but also when
encouraging my colleagues.
I have gained the skill,
knowledge and attitude to
successfully attempt to
implement emerging
technology in my
educational practice.
3. By creating a form to assess apps
for use in my teaching I now have a
greater understanding of what my
educational expectations are of the
apps my students will use.
4. I am more inspired now than ever
to be a leader in implementing
emerging technologies!
