2. Romans 8:1-4
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those
who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ
Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you
free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the
law was powerless to do because it was weakened
by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so
he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the
righteous requirement of the law might be fully
met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but
according to the Spirit.
3. Romans 8:1-2
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for
those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through
Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life
has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Condemnation - the exact sentence (penalty) handed down after
due process (establishing guilt).
4. What is Condemnation?
Romans 8:1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are
in Christ Jesus…
Romans 8:3 He condemned sin in the flesh…
Matt 27:1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders
of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: 2 And
when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to
Pontius Pilate the governor. 3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him,
saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the
thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.
Mark 16:15And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the
gospel to all creation. 16"He who has believed and has been baptized
shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
5. Guilt, Shame and Condemnation
Guilt, shame and condemnation (the sinner’s penalty) are
before-conversion states of mind or feelings. They should have
nothing to do with your walk and relationship with Jesus
today. That kind of penalty is not part of His kingdom—God
does not use shame and condemnation with his kids.
----Steve Berger, Pastor, Grace Chapel
“Shame is a painful feeling of having lost the respect of others
by our own improper behavior . . . guilt describes our self-
condemnation for what we do, while shame shames us for
who we are. You feel guilty for yelling at your child; you feel
shame for being a bad parent.”

9. Romans 8:3
3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was
weakened by the flesh…
7:21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good,
evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight
in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me,
waging war against the law of my mind and making me a
prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a
wretched man I am!
8:7 The mind governed by the (of the) flesh is hostile to
God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8
Those who are in the realm of the (in) flesh cannot please
God.
10. The Law was Powerless
• Law is good.
• Under old covenant, we delight in the law and DESIRE to do
good.
• The law only defines some of the possible good and bad
actions. It does not HELP us DO what is good – it actually
makes it harder. (i.e. coveting)
• Jesus message was that the only way we can truly fulfill the
law is to LOVE.
• We do not love by being commanded to love, but we love
because He first loved us.
• Jesus fulfilled the law for us AND gave us His Spirit.
• Do we love by the flesh or by the Spirit?
11. Romans 8:3
3 For what the law was powerless to do because it
was weakened by the flesh…
Hebrews 7:18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting
aside of a former commandment because of its
weakness and uselessness 19 (for the Law made
nothing perfect).
Hebrews 10:11 Every priest stands daily ministering
and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which
can never take away sins;
12. Romans 8:3-4

Hebrews 10:11 Every priest stands daily ministering and
offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can
never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one
sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of
God, 13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies
be made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He
has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
