Mission College lands LEED certification
Mission College's newly constructed Gary G. Gillmor and Family Academic Center has been awarded
LEED Gold certification.
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a green building certification program
through the U.S. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn
points to achieve different levels of certification. Two buildings at West Valley College have earned
LEED certification--the Language Arts and Social Sciences Building earned LEED Silver and the
Campus Center earned a basic LEED certification.
PAMF donates $50,000 to area food banks
To help provide meals for those in need, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, part of the not-for-profit
Sutter Health network, donated $50,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San
Mateo Counties and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County this holiday season.
The contribution is part of a $252,000 donation by Sutter Health to 27 food banks throughout
Northern California, which includes the Alameda County Community Food Bank in the East Bay.
"We are honored to make this donation on behalf of our employees, doctors and volunteers, whose
hard work allows us to be a compassionate neighbor to families in need," PAMF CEO Richard Slavin
said. Two particular features include the building's geothermal system that uses the ground as its
heating and cooling agent and solar panels, which will help offset one-third of the building's power
consumption.
Other green building features of the Gillmor Center include water-efficient landscaping, use of
certified wood, efficient lighting controls and use of low-emitting materials.
The building is the first structure at Santa Clara's Mission College to earn a LEED certification and
the first in the district to earn gold certification. Green Building Council that recognizes best-in-class
building strategies and practices. Gold is the second-highest certification.
The Gillmor Center earned points toward gold
certification in a number of categories. Over the past
six years, Sutter Health's donations to community food
banks total more than $1.4 million.
