The Cloud Capability Assessment consist of 192 questions
equally divided among the six Cloud Adoption Framework
(CAF) business and technical perspectives. Each question is
assigned a rating from 1-5 that maps to the cloud stages of
adoption:

A report including highlights and observations, key takeaways,
a functional rating (1-5), and a radar chart with

Reservation Platform Optimization
Company: G6 Hospitality owns, operates, and franchises nearly 1,400 economy lodging locations
under the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands in the United States and Canada, and the Hotel 6 brand in
India.
Challenge: To meet rapidly changing customer expectations in a digital-first world, G6 knew it
needed to promote a new technology mindset and culture throughout the company and use
unique solutions to move faster, adapt quicker, and evolve in shorter iterations to realize its
technology leadership objectives in the hospitality industry.
Solution: Concentrating on increasing the 'option value’ of its technology platforms, in which it
can better anticipate ever-increasing evolution cycles of change within its industry, G6 developed
and embarked on what it called its IT 2.0 strategy on AWS. After evaluating several companies, the
team chose to work with APN Premier Consulting Partner Flux7 to build its platform on AWS. G6
has realized 100 percent uptime on its AWS cloud-based Above Property distributed reservation
system since the initial deployment in 2017.

TransferWise
PostgreSQL and MySQL to Amazon RDS and EC2

Company: TransferWise is a global financial technology company working to develop better ways
to move money around the world. Since its launch nine years ago, the company has experienced
global business growth, with more than six million people and businesses having switched to
TransferWise from more traditional providers due to its low cost, ease of use, and greater
efficiency.
Challenge: Keeping pace with its growth was challenging because TransferWise hosted its
application environments in on-premises data centers that made it difficult to scale and ensure the
constant availability customers expect. “In a physical environment, space is constrained by cost
and geography,” says Thomas Hewer, technology lead at TransferWise. When TransferWise started
providing services in new regions, the limitations of the company’s on-premises data centers were
clear.
Solution: TransferWise began its cloud migration by using a hybrid cloud storage architecture to
move its data backup environment to AWS. The company shifted all its backups to AWS using AWS
Storage Gateway, a hybrid cloud storage service that provides on-premises access to cloud
storage. So far, TransferWise has moved hundreds of PostgreSQL and MySQL databases into a
combination of Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) and Amazon Elastic Compute
Cloud (Amazon EC2) with Amazon EBS.

Migration to Amazon EC2 and S3
Company: Igenomix is one of the world’s leading providers of solutions for fertility problems. The company
works with both fertility clinics and individuals, delivering testing services that help increase the chances of
becoming pregnant and having healthy babies. The testing process involves analyzing genomes—made up of
DNA—to detect mutations. All testing is done through next-generation sequencing (NGS), an advanced method
of analyzing DNA that delivers more in-depth results compared to traditional sequencing technologies.
Igenomix runs eight specialist laboratories worldwide.
Challenge: It’s no surprise that next-generation sequencing—also called high-throughput sequencing—is a
compute-intensive activity. “We generate an enormous amount of data,” says Jorge Jiménez Almazán,
bioinformatics director at Igenomix. “We conduct six sequencing runs a week for just one product. Each run
generates 100 gigabytes of data.” But that’s just the start. Further processing, primarily for quality control
purposes, means the company ends up with five times that amount of data for each sequence.
Solution: Igenomix runs its NGS workloads using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) in the EU
(Ireland) region, with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) providing backup. Jimenez Almazán says,
“We have about 7 terabytes of data in Amazon EC2 and almost 60 terabytes residing in Amazon S3, where it has
to be kept for at least two years, as required by law in Spain.” The organization found that getting started on
AWS was a fast process. “We worked with a partner to set up our infrastructure,” says Seguí Real. “It took us just
two weeks from establishing our requirements to running our first NGS workloads.
“Thanks to AWS, we can further accelerate our research on genome sequencing…Before, it would take us 12 hours to test 4 samples of 600 genes. Now,
we can test 24 samples of 600 genes in the same time. As a result, we’ve seen a 600 percent increase in the number of samples we can analyze. This
means we can better serve our customers and increase our revenue because we can process more samples. Even more importantly, it means we can
gather more information about genes in a shorter space of time and therefore accelerate our understanding of genetics.”

G6 Hospitality Reservation Platform Optimization Company: G6 Hospitality owns, operates, and franchises nearly 1,400 economy lodging locations under the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands in the United States and Canada, and the Hotel 6 brand in India. Challenge: To meet rapidly changing customer expectations in a digital-first world, G6 knew it needed to promote a new technology mindset and culture throughout the company and use unique solutions to move faster, adapt quicker, and evolve in shorter iterations to realize its technology leadership objectives in the hospitality industry. Solution: Concentrating on increasing the 'option value’ of its technology platforms, in which it can better anticipate ever-increasing evolution cycles of change within its industry, G6 developed and embarked on what it called its IT 2.0 strategy on AWS. After evaluating several companies, the team chose to work with APN Premier Consulting Partner Flux7 to build its platform on AWS. TransferWise PostgreSQL and MySQL to Amazon RDS and EC2 “We realized quickly that using Volume Gateway and Amazon EBS Snapshots was an effective way to get the data robustly into AWS...It was a simple way of doing the migration that worked with our database team’s existing processes and knowledge.” Thomas Hewer, Technology Lead, TransferWise Company: TransferWise is a global financial technology company working to develop better ways to move money around the world. Since its launch nine years ago, the company has experienced global business growth, with more than six million people and businesses having switched to TransferWise from more traditional providers due to its low cost, ease of use, and greater efficiency. Challenge: Keeping pace with its growth was challenging because TransferWise hosted its application environments in on-premises data centers that made it difficult to scale and ensure the constant availability customers expect. “In a physical environment, space is constrained by cost and geography,” says Thomas Hewer, technology lead at TransferWise. When TransferWise started providing services in new regions, the limitations of the company’s on-premises data centers were clear. Solution: TransferWise began its cloud migration by using a hybrid cloud storage architecture to move its data backup environment to AWS. The company shifted all its backups to AWS using AWS Storage Gateway, a hybrid cloud storage service that provides on-premises access to cloud storage. So far, TransferWise has moved hundreds of PostgreSQL and MySQL databases into a combination of Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) with Amazon EBS.
  • 68. © 2019, Amazon Web Services, Inc. or its Affiliates. Igenomix Migration to Amazon EC2 and S3 Company: Igenomix is one of the world’s leading providers of solutions for fertility problems. The company works with both fertility clinics and individuals, delivering testing services that help increase the chances of becoming pregnant and having healthy babies. The testing process involves analyzing genomes—made up of DNA—to detect mutations. All testing is done through next-generation sequencing (NGS), an advanced method of analyzing DNA that delivers more in-depth results compared to traditional sequencing technologies. Igenomix runs eight specialist laboratories worldwide. Challenge: It’s no surprise that next-generation sequencing—also called high-throughput sequencing—is a compute-intensive activity. “We generate an enormous amount of data,” says Jorge Jiménez Almazán, bioinformatics director at Igenomix. “We conduct six sequencing runs a week for just one product. Each run generates 100 gigabytes of data.” But that’s just the start. Further processing, primarily for quality control purposes, means the company ends up with five times that amount of data for each sequence. Solution: Igenomix runs its NGS workloads using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) in the EU (Ireland) region, with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) providing backup. Jimenez Almazán says, “We have about 7 terabytes of data in Amazon EC2 and almost 60 terabytes residing in Amazon S3, where it has to be kept for at least two years, as required by law in Spain.” The organization found that getting started on AWS was a fast process. “We worked with a partner to set up our infrastructure,” says Seguí Real. “It took us just two weeks from establishing our requirements to running our first NGS workloads. “Thanks to AWS, we can further accelerate our research on genome sequencing…Before, it would take us 12 hours to test 4 samples of 600 genes.
