Stomata are small openings or pores on the underside of leaves that allow for gas exchange. They regulate the intake of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and release of water vapor from the plant. Opening and closing of stomata is controlled by guard cells surrounding each stoma and allows the plant to take in CO2 while limiting water loss through transpiration.
