MAKE-TO-ORDER
A process choice decision in which
goods and services are generally
produced and delivered as one-of-a-
kind or in small quantities. They are
designed to meet customer
specifications. They are considered
“custom” products.
WHAT IS IT?
Customers receive an added benefit by
availability of custom goods
A higher standard of quality is maintained.
Products can be personalized which can add
sentimental value
Customer service level increased as
communication and follow up more necessary
with custom items
WHY MAKE TO ORDER?
In order to conduct our group conversations, we
first used text messaging. It was quite difficult
to follow as SMS text messaging is greatly
effected by how good your cell phone signal is.
We then moved to a free app GroupMe that
works on Android, IPhone, and the computer.
GroupMe allows photo and file sharing and
does not delete conversations when you exit out
of the program
METHOD OF GROUP COMMUNICATION
GROUPME
We chose five(5) different businesses to
determine whether their products were
make-to-order. Each one of these
companies are in a different field, or genre.
The five companies that we have conducted
research on are: Speakeasy Original, Dell
Computers, Subway, Edible Arrangements,
and Patton’s Metal Working Solutions.
RESEARCH ENTITIES
 Speakeasy Original - Specializes in custom made to
order jewelry.
 Dell Computers - A computer company that specializes in
a plethora technological devices.
 Subway - A sandwich company that targets customers
who are trying to live healthier lifestyles.
 Edible Arrangements – This company makes custom
order fruit arrangements that are assembled to resemble
a bouquet of flowers. The fruit is obviously edible, so
hence an edible arrangement
 Patton’s Metal working solutions - This company
specializes in custom made steel products. This
company produces standard and made to order goods.
RESEARCH ENTITIES DESCRIBED
When this company was found they had
products that had already been created. These
products would be considered standard
products as there is no way to customize them
in it’s current form.
However, the owner focuses on customizable
jewelry in which you can customize as you
please.
SPEAKEASY ORIGINAL
Why make-to-order products?
The owner is a metal worker and this is a side
business. He enjoys making jewelry on the side
and has no store front or physical site to display
products.

The Assemble-To-Order strategy is designed to get products into
customers' hands as quickly as possible while allowing for the
product to be slightly customizable. Dell is one of the leading
manufacturing companies that have mastered the system which
is dependent on the integration of information technologies
throughout all aspects of the company's operations.
Dell is described as being "virtually" integrated, as opposed to
vertically integrated, which is why it is considered to being one
of the leading companies using the ATO business model as
oppose to using the MTO business model.
DELL
Dell is also capable of matching the diversification of
products with the new marketing styles. However, this
can only be done with the products produced by the
designated manufacturers. If the consumer requests
or desires to add a product that is not available
through Dell, then the requested cannot be granted. If
the consumer is purchasing a Dell product they are
obligated to use what Dell is offering. This is the
defining reason why it is not considered to be a make-
to-order manufacturer.
DELL
Why assemble-to-order products?
Assemble-to-order allows for Dell to make the product to the
customer’s liking but still get them the product quickly.
Reducing the ability to customize allows them to reduce the
time to complete the product and also still allow the customer
to pick what they want.

Assemble-to-order is "The configuration of standard
parts, sub-assemblies or services that can be selected
by customers from a limited set." Subway uses this
process choice for it’s sandwiches. The customers are
allowed to pick and choose what breads, vegetables,
meat, and sauce to put into their sandwich. However,
like Dell, you can only select from the choices placed
before you.
The remainder of Subways products are standard
products. The cookies, chips, bottled drinks and
fountain drinks are all products that come as is.
SUBWAY
Why assemble-to-order products?
Subway has made strategic choices in what products to sell and
use for it’s sandwiches. Making the sandwiches make-to-order
would cause for a higher skilled workforce and increase costs in
it’s usually lean stores. In it’s current model, the workforce
does not have to be highly skilled in culinary arts as all they
have to do is assemble the sandwich the way the customer
requests.
SUBWAY

Edible Arrangements products are make-to-order. The main
reason for them being made to order is because fruit perishes
quickly. While they do have ideas for fruit bouquet’s and treats
that would be considered assemble-to-order, they allow you to
make your own bouquet’s and pick the fruit(s) that you want to
include in them.

While the vast majority of the products are standard, some of
the products can be customized to the customers liking. The
customer can send drawings showing the specifications of the
product and Patton’s makes it just as they request.
PATTON’S SALES CORPORATION
Why make-to-order products?
As a distributor of steel, any customizable options Patton’s
provides for its customers adds value and distinguishes them
from the competition.
