BYOD – Bring Your Own Device
Tami Blake
IT743
Summer 2012
 BYOD Concept
 Students bring their own mobile device to school
 Teachers incorporate use of mobile devices into
      curriculum
 Provides students with a 21st Century digital
      learning environment
 Shift to new ways of teaching and learning
 Why the push for BYOD?
     The majority of students
        have their own mobile
        device already
     Schools can spend less
        money on technology
     Enables teachers to
        leverage interactive digital
        curricula
     Increases student
        engagement
     Makes the curriculum more
        relevant to the student
• Bandwidth
• Network
• Support
• Security
• Usage Policies
• School Owned Devices
• Technology Training
 How will you handle the increase in
    bandwidth used?
 What about students who don’t have a
    mobile device?
 Do you need a separate acceptable use policy
    for mobile devices?
 Will teachers need technology training?
 Plan for large increases in
  the number of devices
  accessing the internet
 Get a good estimate on
  the number of devices
  you anticipate
 Make sure your usage
  policy defines correct and
  legitimate usage of
  devices
 Make sure infrastructure
  is adequate
 Budget for additional
  equipment and staff
 Define network access
  guidelines
 Evaluate network security
 Define when and where
  students may use mobile
  devices
 Will students be required
  to use school network or
  can they use their own
  service provider?
 Set restrictions on what
  types of content can be
  uploaded or downloaded
 Teachers may need training
 in:
  ▪ How to use devices
  ▪ Integrating mobile learning
    into their classroom
 When will you offer training?
 How much support will be
 provided for students and/or
 their devices?
How are teachers and students using their
mobile devices to enhance learning?
 Sharing content
 Creating Content
 Communicating
    with other students
    and teachers
 Study Groups
 Peer Tutoring
 Instant messaging
 Social Media
 Devices such as
  clickers allow
  teachers to gauge
  learning in real time
 Online tools such as
  Polleverywhere can
  also be used and
  save the expense of
  purchasing
  equipment.
 E –readers such as the Kindle and Nook provide an
alternative to carrying around heavy backpacks.
Students can view their textbooks easily on
devices designed for reading in mind.

                             Most textbook
                             companies now provide
e-books in place of or in
                             addition to traditional
                             textbooks
And always remember....

Technology should enhance the learning
experience and not distract from it.
