2012 Tim Wade slides - Leading Change? Yes We Can!

Explanatory slides from Tim Wade's leading change sessions. Tim Wade speaks to corporate, government and convention audiences about leadership, change, psychology and productivity for positive performance results. The focus is on the mindset of the leaders and the recipients of the change information. He presents information on how the brain processes, filters and then interprets filtered information from which the person responds. But if the filter is negative or destructive, then the response will be inapproriate. For this he introduces his V9 profile to encourage people to Lead, Develop, Give and Seek in order to transition to and maintain a "mindset of victory". Change leadership requires us to acknowledge that our audiences may be responding poorly to change instructions as a result of their default mindsets, more so than from the quality of the communication or the extent to which recipients have been trained. The poor results then show in performance evaluations, but the problem stems from styles of thinking. Tim Wade says that the starting point is awareness, including awareness of our relationships with self and with others. As we improve both, we begin to transition to a Victor mindset, because to do both, we would be asking better questions, and developing our self-confidence and our desire to help and develop others towards a common beneficial goal. www.timwade.com

  11. 11. Goal Clarity, Learn Skills, Victor Mindset, Positive Action, PersistenceWhen we think about the Olympics, or any sort of race, the purpose is to get to the finish lineand fast. When we think about the things we want to do, share and have in life, it’s importantto be clear on what those things are. Athletes know what their goal is. They know whatdirection they need to move, how to prepare, how to begin, how to end, and how to altertheir execution plan during the race. They are willing to learn skills from mentors and coaches. They persist through physical and emotional pain by taking positive action and keeping fixedon their goal. Their mindset is positive and focused on victory. They believe they can do it andthey take action daily to ensure they have the best chance of winning. Are you doing this too? © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  12. 12. Organisational Goals: DO SELL EARN More More More GIVE LAUGH More More To do these better, we need to be better Communicators. To inspire OTHERS to do these better, we need to be better Leaders. We need to increase our awareness of how we relate to ourselves and others. © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  13. 13. DO SELL More More Success = Effectiveness EARN More LAUGH More CHANGE GIVE Change Actions & Thinking More Better business is finding ways to increase effectiveness in all these 5 areas.Doing this will mean that we will face the need to change some things. Anyimprovement, growth, development and advancement requires change. Buthow to we feel about change? How do our people respond to change? © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  14. 14. To Increase Results…First Increase Self-Awareness: How am I behaving? How do you work? What powers you? What drives you to do the things you do? And what stops you or holds you back? To change our results, we need to understand the answers to these questions… © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  15. 15. How? - Increase Self-Awareness BROWN What you focus on looking for, you will see more of. Look for more brown around you, and you will see more brown and be less aware of everything else. Look for what is negative and impossible and destructive, and you will see more of that. Look for what is positive and possible and value-adding, and you will see more. Choose. © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  16. 16. Your Brain’s Information FilterYour brain filters out what you have told itto consider as unimportant through amechanism called the reticular activatingsystem (RAS).You tell your RAS what’s unimportant by:• specifying what is important (goals)• specifying what is unimportant (throughprioritisation)• training it to respond to what isimportant (through your actions, decisionsand habits, whether good or bad)You are training your mind (whetherdeliberate or accidental), and this createsthe way your mind is set to respond toinformation… your mindset. © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  17. 17. Like radio waves that are already all around us, we can tune into differenttypes of mindsets. Which we choose is up to us, but it can be influencedby our workplace or environment and our strength of character. In the V9profile there are 4 different mindsets that depend upon our relationshipwith ourselves, and our relationship with other people. © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  18. 18. Fear and procrastination are mechanismswe employ to regain a sense of stability orcontrol when things seem too uncertain orare changing too much. We have a needfor Stability and a need for Change. Theseconflict with each other causing us stressbecause they are at opposite ends of anemotional continuum. When we have toomuch of one need and it feelsuncomfortable, we tend to move awayfrom it and towards the opposing need. This is what is commonly referred to asour “comfort zone”. If we change our emotion from discomfort to excitement,we learn to expand our comfort zone and accept more change. We willstrengthen those we attach more emotional significance to. Four needs conflictand influence our emotional responses to situations. We need Change (variety, adventure, surprise, uncertainty) and yet we also need Stability (certainty, control, comfort), and we need Individual Significance (feel special, unique, stand out from the crowd) yet we need to also feel Team Acceptance(connection, love, belonging, part of the crowd). © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com

  22. 22. Change takes discipline, leadership, faithOur mindset has been and positive reinforcement. created by habit. Leaders of change need help too, as well as guidance in their discipline, leadership,We need to change it faith and positive reinforcement too. Give by habit. them assistance, training, coaching and professional external support as well as internal support structures. “Successful people formed the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.” - Albert E. N. Gray, 1940 The above quote doesn’t say that successful people LIKE to do the things that failures don’t like to do. They might not like to do them either, but they form the habit of doing them anyway. © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com

  24. 24. If we want to change ourresults, we first need tochange our minds…• We are conditioned to think a certain way (mindset)• What we think about determines our moods/ our feelings / our emotions (character) Most managers and• Our feelings can determine the extent of our trainers try to change actions (motivation) results by addressing only• Our actions determine our results a change in actions… they need to learn to go deeper. It is learnable. CTEAR © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  25. 25. 26. 26. Cultivating a Positive Possibility MindsetMake a habit of deliberately tuning into only one “radio station” of themind… deliberately choose to have the Mindset of Victory. To do this, practice looking for what is possible and what is value-adding… Theeasiest and most effective way to do this by asking better questions.Instead of “What’s wrong with this?” ask “How can I help this becomeeven better?” Instead of “Why am I so fat?” ask “What can I do now tobecome even fitter?” Observe your own thoughts, language and focuswhen observing, describing or commenting about events, situations, ideas or other people. Also pay close attention to the stories you tellyourself or others about you. This can be challenging as the roots aredeeper and we are more convinced bythem. It’s how we identify withourselves… our identity. Are you REALLYwho you keep saying you are? Did thosethings that happened in your past reallyhappen TO you or did they perhapshappen FOR you? Change your mind. © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
  27. 27. Remember: just going through these slides is not enough. You must take positive action, even if it at first feels unpleasant! If you need help: ASK. “Successful people formed the habit of doing things that failuresdon’t like to do.” Albert E. N. Gray, 1940 © 2012 Tim Wade www.TimWade.com
