5. George Lima ’48, Tuskegee Airman
George Lima helped found the University’s chapter of
Omega Psi Phi, a black fraternity, and he studied
sociology partly “to get my head straight about this
business about segregation and discrimination,” he says.
Mr. Lima founded the Black Air Foundation, a non-profit
organization that is dedicated to empowering youth
through education. His remarkable experiences as a
“Tuskegee Airman” came to the attention of the public
in the documentary “Black Men Can Fly”.
The Inman Page Black Alumni Council honored George
Lima during the 2010 Black Alumni Reunion for his
outstanding contributions to the Black community at
Brown University and beyond.

6. Thomas Brown ’50, Trustee Emeritus
A native of Fall River, Thomas Brown is most
remembered for the lifelong battle he fought in
Boston to achieve diversity in employment.
A member of the class of 1950 at Brown
University, he immediately took a more venturous
professional turn for that era. As an associate at
the Marvin and Leonard Advertising Agency he
became the first African-American to be
employed at a management level in that
industry.
He was a member of the Brown University Board
of Trustees.

7. Danielle Dunlap ’10, Peace Corps Activist
Danielle Alexis Dunlap graduated in 2010 from Brown
University with a degree in Neuroscience.
She was one of 69 Americans sworn in as Peace Corps
volunteers on Aug. 30, 2011 at the residence of the
U.S. Ambassador to Ghana as part of the 50th
anniversary celebration of Peace Corps in Ghana.
Throughout her service, she carried out activities aimed
at improving the quality of life for her community in the
areas of nutrition, HIV/AIDS and malaria awareness,
and sanitation.
While in Ghana, Danielle raised money to build a clinic
in her community. That community chose to remember
her by naming the clinic after the name they had given
her, "Mama Grace."

Partner Scholarships
Since 2006, IPC has partnered with Brown to send highperforming, low-income, African-American students to Brown
pre-college summer programs they would not otherwise be
able to afford.

10. Original “Marie Moses Grant” named for
Marie Moses Irons ’82
One of Brown University’s first AfricanAmerican female Computer Science
graduates.
“… She was executive director of technology for
the Pontiac, Mich., school system, where she
increased the number of computers in the
classrooms and trained teachers and students to
use them. She was previously a computer
consulting manager at Coopers & Lybrand, a
public school teacher in Detroit, and a computer
programmer at CSC in Baltimore...”
Inspired by a strong desire
to honor the legacy of
alumna Marie Moses Irons
’82 after her tragic death
in late 2002, ten ‘82 alumni
started a grant fund
administrated by IPC-NY to
send 2 middle school
students to Brown’s SPARK
Program.
That fund – The Ethel
Tremaine Robinson
Foundation – was housed
external to Brown.

13. Roland Laird’s Dedication to SPS
“He focused on the big picture, but never lost the
details...did the student have the right shoes,
enough socks, enough spending money, a rain
coat?
He put so many miles on his car, driving students
back and forth to Providence...sometimes with the
student's family in the car or a single mom who
was worried about where the heck her child was
going.”

14. Roland later expanded the IPCNY scholarship effort to send
high school students to the
Brown Leadership Institute.
Eventually, he became a source
for identifying African American
high school applicants for NSF
Summer Fellowships.
IPC-ATL joined this effort in
2012, with Roland’s help.
