William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" Literary Analysis In William Faulkner's story "A Rose for
Emily" his main character Miss Emily Grierson's deranged behavior leaves the reader questioning
her mental status. Emily comes from a family with high expectations of her a sort of "hereditary
obligation" (30). Emily has been mentally manipulated by her as so indicated in the line of the
story "we did not say she was crazy then we believed she had to do that we remember all the
young men her father had driven away" (32). There is already proof of mental illness in the family
"remembering how old lady Wyatt, her great aunt, had gone completely crazy last" (32). The first

During the conversation Miss Emily tells the men "See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in
Jefferson" (31). Colonel Sartoris has been dead for almost ten years. Emily's behavior not only
shows mental instability but also that she may be delusional and confused. "She was sick for a
long time. When we saw her again, her hair was cut short making her look like a girl" (32).
Through this image the narrator portrays Emily regressing back to her youth. It is at this point
that Miss Emily is being seen around town with a young contractor named Homer Barron. Emily's
behavior takes another dramatic strange twist when she visits the druggist and requests some
poison. The druggist asked Miss Emily "What kind? For rats and such?" (33). to which Emily
responds "I want the best one you have. I don't care what kind" (33). It is at this point that we
truly begin to question if Miss Emily has foul intentions. "She will kill herself" "She will marry
him" "She will persuade him yet" (33). These statements were made in regard to Miss Emily's
relationship with Homer Barron. Homer himself had stated that he liked men, he was known to
drink with the younger men in the Elks Club, and that he was not a marrying man. In light of

Stephen King Literary Analysis Essay
Stephen King's "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" is a marvelous and unusual text. Within the
first part of his book, also called C.V., he explains his life experience up to the day he finishes the
book. King expresses his life with multiple literary elements that assist the readers on imagining
his life of adventures, catastrophes, fears, and loves. Following are three of my favorite passages
that caught my attention. King gets drunk for the first time on his senior class trip to
Washington. He expresses that "At some point after that I am in my bed. The bed holds still but
the room starts to spin around it, faster and faster. It occurs to me that it's spinning like a turntable
of my Webcor phonograph, on which I use to play Fats Domino and now play Dylan Clark Five.
The room is the turntable, I am the spindle, and pretty soon the spindle is going to start tossing its
platters," (King 89), shows how King was so drunk, that he imagined the room was spinning. In
this passage, King gives off the impression of how it feels to be drunk by applying imagery about

aquarium. In the cage is a white rabbit with a pink nose and pink–rimmed eyes. In its front paws is a
carrot–stub which it is contentedly munching. On its back, clearly marked in blue ink, is the
numeral 8," (King 105). Stephen mentions the rabbit in a cage to send a "telepathic" image to the
reader, which is also known as imagery. To receive this message, we read the detailed paragraph he

Dreams are a compelling force in people's lives. They are what propel them forward each and every
day in an effort to reach something better. The American Dream has been sought after by millions all
over the world for hundreds of years. This country was founded on the belief that anyone could
achieve their dreams. However, in the 1920s these hopes and aspirations began to splinter until they
ultimately shattered. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism, setting, and
theme to depict the unattainability of the American Dream.
Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald's use of symbolism helps create an ambiance of longing. He
dominantly uses color to represent and convey specific messages to the reader. These colors are
woven so seamlessly into the story that one would not think very much of them. However, they
play a large role in shaping the novel. Fitzgerald uses yellow to represent money, and Gatsby's
desire to be included among the elite "old money" social class. His longing is shown through his
yellow car and his yellow suit. Although yellow represents a major aspect of the novel, the green
light at the end of Daisy's pier holds the most significance. When Nick says, "Gatsby believed in
the green light ... " (Fitzgerald 180), he is referring to Gatsby's American Dream and how he

Many people can easily recognize the story of The Little Mermaid. After its international success
through the Disney movie in 1989 children and adults all over the world were able to fantasize
freely about this princess fairytale. However, what many people don't know is that the debut of the
movie The Little Mermaid is not the original plot of the story following Princess Ariel. Born in
Denmark, Hans Christian Anderson wrote over 40 stories which have now greatly influences
modern day disney films. The original literary piece written about a mermaid princess was written in
1836 which is said to be the inspiration behind the disney movie, The Little Mermaid portraying the
character of a young mermaid circling through the challenges of love.
It can be said that the movie of The Little Mermaid has the fundamental elements of the literary
piece as it follows the story of a young mermaid princess, coming of age and falling for a human
prince. Some challenges that are presented through both the film and the literary piece are very
similar. For example, Ariel which is the name of the mermaid princess throughout the film grows up
without a mom as does the character from the story by Anderson. In both plots the mermaid's father
is the king of the sea making her one of the princesses as they both have multiple sisters. However,
there is a distinctive similarity between the original mermaid story and the most recent story setting
connecting them thoroughly. The key element of both stories is demonstrated through the
introduction of the human prince that became the main reason for the mermaid searching for a way
to become human. Connecting straight from this point comes the next similarity that ties in the
conflict for both scenarios. During the two stories the same quest for becoming human was
developed. This was the leading cause of the journey following both princesses. Due to them being
sea creatures, especially royalty it was a great struggle to find the right solution that would allow
them to become complete humans by having legs instead of a fish tale to survive on land.

Stephen King is a man of many talents and personalities; not only is he able to scare his readers
immensely, he is also able to make them laugh. I chose a passage from Stephen King's On Writing
for this assignment; the passage stuck in my mind for a long time after I finished the book. His

In the poem 'Still I Rise' by Maya Angelou, the poet uses repetition, metaphors and similes to express
to her audience about how she has overcome racism in her life through demonstrating a strong, proud
and defiant attitude to inspire others.
The poet uses repetition of the word 'rise' to show that she has overcome and risen above racism.

Another use of a metaphor in the last stanza relates back to the key idea of the poem. In the line, 'I
am the dream and the hope of the slave,' Maya Angelou is directly comparing herself to what a slave
dreams about, which is equality and freedom. She is calling herself the 'ambassador' of equal
rights, and therefore stating herself as a leader who will make the first step to rise up against racism
and fight for equal rights. This again shows her strong, powerful approach to overcoming racial
inequality.
Lastly, the use of similes in the poem effectively conveys the key idea further. In thesimile, 'Just like
moons and like suns...still I'll rise', the poet is comparing herself to the moon and the sun, which
are two very powerful things. The common phrase, 'the sun will always rise tomorrow' directly
connects to this simile because by comparing herself to the sun, Angelou connotes to the reader
she is certain that she will always 'rise' again tomorrow just like the sun, no matter what happens
to her. By showing her determined and resilient attitude to not give in to oppressors through this
simile, it strengthens the key idea of this poem. Further use of similes also helps to reveal Maya
Angelou's bold and powerful attitude, for example, when she says, "'Cause I walk like I've got oil

The literary device that is going to be used to pair up with the primary context is Symbolism. In the
Story The Thing in the Forest, there is plenty of symbolism in this short story. The whole story is
essentially a symbol. There are plenty of objects in this story that have a very different meaning,
referencing to the time period in the piece of literature. In The Thing in the Forest there is a great
deal of symbolism. For example the whole story is a symbol for the war going on at that time,

Furthermore, the writer has used the "Inverted Pyramid" technique, meaning, all the key

used by Duffy to give the stanzas the rhythm of natural speech which makes the persona sounds
more violent and aggressive.

Analysis of "The Necklace" Many women dream of living a rich life, full of luxury, riches and
servants. In the short story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, a middle–class woman named
Madame Loisel desires that life style very much. In "The Necklace" Madame Loisel's vain desires
cause many conflicts and her ultimate downfall. One small conflict in the story is Madame Loisel
vs. her husband. He is always trying to make his wife satisfied and she never appreciates him or
their way of life. De Maupassant makes this clear in the beginning by telling the reader that "she let

At the last moment, she remembers her rich friend and she goes to her to ask her if she could
borrow some jewelry. Her friend agrees to let her borrow a necklace that appears to be made of
diamonds. All of Madame Loisel's desires are fulfill at the ball. She charms everyone and her
beauty is recognized. She is happier than ever because she has fulfilled her vain desires. She has
finally lived her dream. All of her acts show her desire for the upper class life. Her next act,
however, causes her downfall. Her greed and pride finally catch up with her after the ball and she

Nonetheless, that is not what it is called true love. The truest love of all is the one that remains the
same by death, the one that is left unchanged. The narrator devoted his whole life to his woman,
even in death. That is true love, when it is certain that there is love and it is a realization that both
lovers could never live without each other. This goes hand in hand with the narrator, as he finds it
difficult and almost impossible to part with the love of his life. He believes that without her, he
finds no purpose in life. She does pass away, but that doesn't stop him from being with her one bit.
Death is the ultimate barrier, in this poem.
Annabel Lee's presence is kept alive in his mind through his dreams at night. "For the moon never
beams, without bringing me dreams of the beautiful Annabel Lee" (Poe 34–35). Her eyes are seen by
his eyes, every night; her love is seen by his love, as without that, night never comes. "And the stars
never rise but I feel the bright eyes of the beautiful Annabel Lee" (Poe 36–37). For the narrator,
nature revolves around this grand feeling that the two lovers share. This goes to show that even

poem, "What it's Like to Be a Black Girl", by Patricia Smith, (1991), are both about the coming of
age of young girls and the conflicts that they encounter. The two pieces explore issues that most
young girls have with their bodies and others during their puberty years. The literary elements that
will be compared in this essay is imagery and symbolism. The main conflict in both pieces that will
be explored is individual versus self. These literary elements and conflict will help us to explore the

"First of all, it's being 9 years old and feeling like you're not finished". It's as though, the changes
that are to come are going to be better than what's already been. The main change she hopes is that
she will be considered beautiful because unlike Connie in the first story this 9 year old girl don't
believe she's pretty at all. So she's hoping that, what's to come? Is better than what's been?
Although there are many different literary techniques used in these two pieces imagery is an
element that is depicted in the both of them. Imagery is a literary technique that appeals to the
senses of its readers. It gives the reader a visual of what the writer is feeling about what he or she
is writing. In the poem, "What it's Like to Be a Black Girl", by Smith, (1991), imagery is used to
display the writers feelings of being black and not necessary proud of being black, "it's dropping
food coloring in your eyes to make them blue and suffering their burn in silence". The writer
could be using the word blue as a way to depict the wanting to have beautiful blue eyes like many
White women as opposed to the dark brown or black eyes that she probably possessed. Imagery is
also seen in the way how the writer explains her encounter with the opposite sex. "It's finally having
a man reach out for you then caving in around his fingers". It is having a man finally paying
attention to you but not knowing that he only wants to control your body.

Literary Analysis Reflection
I was not introduced to the idea of analyzing literature until probably the sixth grade. Since then,
my definition of the term "literary analysis" took a different direction with every new teacher that
tried to break down such a concept. It was first taught to me as summarizing a piece of writing,
including all of the main points. Moving on to the next couple grades, I learned that it involved
understanding so called literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, allusions, and imagery to name
a few. In the ninth grade, I reached a major turning point in my perspective on analyzing literature. I
was taught that it is the act closely examining a piece of writing to find significant symbolism, roles,
or effects of characters, settings, or parts of the plot. By the end of my sophomore year, I've come to
define it as interpreting the author's writing through deep examination and making a logical and
arguable conclusion based off of my findings and my supported understanding. Consequently, there
are no right or wrong answers in your interpretations as you are to prove your point with evidence
from the text. With my current knowledge, putting analysis into an essay is somewhat similar to a
persuasive essay for a mock trial class in terms of the argumentative position you take. My recent
experiences with analyzing literature have been immensely profound, but there are certain strategies

The assigned reading of "Good Readers and Good Writers" by Vladimir Nabokov probes the
subject that is the necessary attributes an individual must have in order for them to be successful
readers and writers of literature. A list of ten rules is then stated in the essay and sets them as the
baseline commandments that an individual must follow in order to be some kind of a devoted
"good reader". While the criteria sets the standard for a "good reader" it aligns with that of a good

In order to make this reflection as honest as I can, I'm going to have to reveal that my beliefs and
idea on reading do not synchronize with those of Perrine and thus it is difficult to incorporate her
advice and provide an unbiased reflection that does not conflict with the author's analytical
interpretations. What is perhaps the punchline of the text states, "Immature readers seek only
escape. Even when they think they are reading for interpretation or some useful moral, they insist
that what they read return them always some pleasant or exciting image of the world or some
flattering image of themselves" (Perrine 2). While the previous quote may not be completely
applicable to me because the text was assigned, I can see myself getting lost within the text and
with that, my interpretations. Had I perhaps distanced myself and not been allowed to get "lost"
in the text then I would have provided an interpretation for the assigned novels with less emotional
bias in it. Perrine then goes onto say an immature reader tends to "make fixed demands of every
story and feel frustrated and disappointed unless these demands are satisfied. Often they stick to

Literary Analysis Reflection
Before high school, if I was asked what it meant to analyze literature, I would simply say that it
meant summarizing the plot of a story. Little did I find out, it was much more than that. During my
freshman and sophomore year of highschool, I started learning more and more about analyzing
literature. At first, it was really hard to understand because I was still used to doing it the easy way,
which was plainly summarizing. But with a lot of practice and dedication to learning about literary
analysis, I was able to learn a lot. Now, I see summarizing and analyzing as two completely
different things. When summarizing, you're basically rephrasing what happened in a piece of text
and you can't state your own opinion or make arguments. Literary analysis is the opposite of that.
When analyzing literature, you're able to work closely with a piece of text or picture to find
evidence that proves the overall theme or message. One of the more interesting aspects of
analyzing that has to be talked about first is poem analysis. I've never been a huge fan of poems
because I've never really understood them at all. When I began learning about literary analysis, the
first thing I thought about was to apply it to poems to help me create a better understanding. I must
admit, poems are a little hard to analyze because everybody understands them in a different way.
With the use of figurative languages as well, I had to pay close attention to any connections that
author had made. One strategy that really helped me analyze poems better was looking at the title
of the poem and the author. The title of the poem is important to me because whenever I don't
understand a poem, the title usually has the topic of the entire poem in it. When I've obtained both
information, I would do some research on the author and learn a little bit about his background.
Many authors would have a drive or motivation to start on a piece of writing and sometimes when
you learn about their background, it is very easy for you to understand their poems. A good
example would be a poem with the title The Butterfly by Pavel Friedman. At first, this poem was
hard to understand because it just mainly spoke about what seems to be the life of a butterfly who

My Literary Analysis Assignment
I tried to submit my literary analysis paper again after I made the new account on Turnitin.com.
The website told me to copy and paste my text in the space provided, so I did. I then realized after
submitting it that my paper wouldn't turn up with the MLA formatting I had used in my google doc.
As you know, I've been trying to submit this paper since 3:15 on Tuesday. I'm not sure what to do to
correct this. The website won't let me resubmit my paper so I can attach it in the correct format. Is
there anyway you can change the assignment settings?
I am sorry that this has been so difficult. I did share the paper with you yesterday through Google
Docs to show that it was done on time correctly.

A Rose for Emily: Literary Analysis Essay William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" Literary Analysis In William Faulkner's story "A Rose for Emily" his main character Miss Emily Grierson's deranged behavior leaves the reader questioning her mental status. Emily comes from a family with high expectations of her a sort of "hereditary obligation" (30). Within the first part of his book, also called C.V., he explains his life experience up to the day he finishes the book. For example, Ariel which is the name of the mermaid princess throughout the film grows up without a mom as does the character from the story by Anderson. In both plots the mermaid's father is the king of the sea making her one of the princesses as they both have multiple sisters. However, there is a distinctive similarity between the original mermaid story and the most recent story setting connecting them thoroughly. The key element of both stories is demonstrated through the introduction of the human prince that became the main reason for the mermaid searching for a way to become human.
