Hello, It’s Tony Fortunato And Peter Ciuffreda from the Technology Firm In this session we will be showing you how to use the free live screen recording program CamStudio. Enjoy
so what is CamStudio? CamStudio is a recording program which records live actions on your screen as you perform them. So it creates a video of what you record on your screen? Exactly Does CamStudio require an installation? Yes. It requires a quick installation like most other Windows programs. You may also want to search online for additional codec’s to get full use of different video and audio options.
Why would we use CamStudio? CamStudio is good for capturing things as they occur. A great example is recording a live data capture for future reference. CamStudio is good for presentations, and for training others. I can see that.
Even though you see the main application screen, it will minimize when you start the recording. This is why we strongly advise you get familiar with the Shortcut keys Before you start, you would want to check the recoding file format. Most of the times you will select Record to AVI. If you are not sure, just leave it as an AVI format
The important thing to note is that the larger the region, the larger the video file will be. Play with various region sizes to figure out what works best for you I typically change my screen size to 1024 x 768 resolution so the video doesn’t seem small. So, by making the screen resolution smaller and using the Autopan feature (next slide), you can get pretty good details, while maintaining a reasonable file size.
Unfortunately the Options can not be restored to default settings easily. Please note the existing settings before you go experimenting I usually check off the “Do not Record Audio” and add it later. You will find that this will immediately reduce the file size. Couldn’t you use Easy Capture to quickly make a note of the current settings Great idea …….
The Keyboard shortcuts you should get familiar with are; Record/Pause Stop The Pause key is helpful to pause your recording while you add an annotation or move things around. The Stop key is used to finish your recording and prompt you for the filename Test your keyboard shortcuts to ensure that they do not conflict with any other applications
On busy screens, the Cursor Highlight option is helpful to direct the viewer to specific items For example, if you want to explain how to decode a packet and need to illustrate a point, you would use this feature. Hiding the cursor would be helpful when recording a video, or if the cursor is distracting
Flash format is more web-oriented if you plan to embed this video in a webpage Most of the time, you will Record to AVI and convert it to whatever format you need later.
The advantage of having Flash files, is that you would not download the video file and have to worry about various versions of the same video or copyright issues. The only challenge is that you would need a flash player, webserver or create a webpage to watch your videos. You can also use a 3 rd party video site like youtube, but remember, now its on the web for all to see.
If you want to either explain what you are doing or highlight something specific, an annotation would help. Again, this is where the Shortcuts will help create smooth transitions.
Hope this Quickstart will help you get started with CamStudio Have a good day folks, bye for now.
