I am pursuing my bachelor's in Leather Designing and once i went on internet during my Design project to look for the types of bags and i couldn't find any list or any ppt with all the types of bags and details. So, putting together all the information i had, i made a presentation myself..!!
2. Athletic bag: A soft, roomy bag used to carry sporting equipment and apparel to the gym.
Backpack: A bag that is supported by the shoulders with double handles and lies across the back. Backpacks are supported on either one or both shoulders. A slightly larger handbag designed to be worn on the back like a backpack. Backpack Handbags can have one or two shoulder straps and can be carried by both or by just one like a sling bag.
3. Beach Bag: A large handbag, sometimes of canvas, used to carry personal items, as a bathing suit, towel, and suntan lotion, to and from a beach. Beach bags are colorful large bags usually made of cloth, straw or other such material. Some of the high end beach bags have a plastic lining inside which protects the bag from moisture. Beach bags are also ideal for other picnics and even the gym. The best beach bags are the colorful ones sold on the roadside.
Baguette Bag: A rectangular bag that reminds a baguette in shape. It is long from side to side and small from top to bottom. A small, narrow, rectangular shape purse, resembling a French loaf of bread (baguette).
It has short thin straps so that it can be worn over your shoulder and sit just under your armpit. A pretty baguette bag adds oomph to a flirty feminine top and fitted classic jeans ensemble. This is an effortless sexy date look.
4. Barrel Bag: Shaped like a barrel or closed tube, usually with shoulder-length straps.
Bowling bag: A popular 1990s "retro" style for younger women, modelled after American bags used to carry bowling balls. A bag originally made to hold a bowling ball, this has become a fashion item. A round, medium to large handbag with a shape that resembles a bowling ball.
5. Bucket bag: Shaped like a bucket, medium-size or large, with shoulder straps and a drawstring closure Bag that is taller than it is wide with a rounded bottom. Named because they resemble a bucket shape.
Clutch: A clutch is a small handheld bag that is tucked under the arm or carried by hand. No little black dress can ever look sleek, elegant, polished and complete without a clutch. No A-list celebrity ever hits the red carpet without the most gorgeous sought after clutch bags to accessorise their haute couture gowns. While day time glam calls for a clutch with minimum embellishments, opt for a bejewelled one for a dazzling night look. Small but long bag (rectangular), evening bag without a handle. You have to clutch it – hence the name.
6. Cosmetic case: Bags of varying sizes and shapes with a zip closure lined to hold cosmetics.
Coin Purse: Sometimes known as a change purses. A coin purse is a small bag designed to hold coins and other small items.
7. Feed bag: Bag that is used to feed an animal (such as a horse); covers the muzzle and fastens at the top of the head.
Doctor's bag: These are modeled after a Victorian era doctor's bag for making house calls. A traditional doctor's bag is a duffel-shaped leather satchel used primarily to carry small medical necessities when making house calls. The classic doctor's bag is flat- bottomed with rounded sides, slightly elongated. Two large handles come together over the top for easy carrying. The mouth of the bag has a collapsible metal frame that springs open when handles are separated and tugged. The gaping mouth makes it easy to see into the bag and extract items.
8. Drawstring Bag: A purse that closes with a drawstring at the top, may have wrist- or shoulder-length straps, popular as an evening bag style.
Duffel Bag: A large bag usually used for travel or sports. The name comes from Duffel, a town in Belgium where the fabric used to make the bag originated. Duffel bags are often used by sailors, and are sometimes called sea bags in this capacity.
9. Envelope bag: A flat, square or rectangular bag with a triangle-shaped top flap that folds
over like an envelope.
Fold over clutch: A clutch with or without a handle that can be tucked or folded.
10. Half-moon Bag: Shaped as a half-moon.
Hobo Bag: Medium-size crescent-shaped bag with a top zipper and often a slouch or dip in the Centre; a modern, casual silhouette. This soft, slouchy semi-circular bag has one shoulder strap. A hobo bag is casual bag that helps you look stylish without really trying. They pair nicely with breezy gypsy skirts, linen pants, vests and sandals. Think of a picnic or a jazz concert in the park and your hobo bag will be your perfect handbag of choice. Most often these bags are made of soft material. This bag goes well with the “boho chic” kind of outfits. They can be teamed with casual pants or long skirts. They can also be carried with casual kurtas. A large crescent-shaped shoulder bag or any large bag that hangs from your shoulder and has a main compartment closure (unlike the "tote" which is normally open top).
11. Kelly Bag: This bag is a classic structured style that was originally created by Hermes for movie star princess Grace Kelly. It oozes sophistication and timeless style in its beautiful uncluttered design and looks fantastic with a suit. Like the satchel, it's a great bag for the office. The Kelly bag is a trapezium closed with two straps. Four studs on the bottom, itself made of three layers of leather, enable it to stand on the ground. It is sold in eight sizes, ranging from 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) to 50 centimeters (20 inches). The padlock, keys and hardware are made of white or yellow gold. The construction of each Kelly bag requires 18 to 25 hours of handicraft, with each item being created by a single artisan, resulting in high retail prices. By the mid-1990s, a Kelly bag was priced at US $3,500.
Kiondo Bag: A hand woven handbag made from sisal with leather trimmings. It is indigenous to Kenya.
12. Laptop Bag: Like the name suggests this is a bag meant for carrying a laptop computer. Good laptop bags have a separate compartment for a charger.
Laptop Tote Bag: This bag saves you the trouble of carrying a handbag and a laptop case to work. This bag is a tote made of leather or similar material. It has a separate case for your laptop and individual sections to put other personal belongings.
13. Messenger Bag: One long strap worn across the body, inspired by bags worn by urban messengers to deliver business mail, a modern silhouette. A roomy bag with a long strap that lies across the body, winds around the chest and rests the bag on the lower back. Usually made of high quality, durable and water-resistant materials. Messenger bags are often used by bicycle messengers, though they are increasingly becoming an urban fashion icon.
Minaudiere: A small ornamental case for a woman’s cosmetics, jewelry, or personal items that is often carried as a handbag. A small rectangular evening bag, usually hard- bodied, sometimes held inside a soft fabric bag that serves as a sleeve, embezzled with pieces of metal, semi-precious stones or beads or covered with fabric or leather.
14. Muff: A winter bag made of real or faux fur, wool or velvet that has zippered compartments and a slip opening for hands.
Pouch: Small bag such as a pocket, teabag, money bag, sporran, etc.
Saddle Purse: Shaped like a horse saddle, may have equestrian motifs and hardware to emphasize the design.
15. Satchel Bag: A structured handbag with double handles, locking hardware and a wide, flat bottom. May be large or small. A purse that usually has a top closure, top carry handle, and a flat bottom. Satchels may have a triangular side profile. Also known as a 'postman bag', a satchel is a great bag to take along to the office. If you find one in leather or patent leather, it can look very professional and smart. This is the ideal bag for students and also for picnics.
Saddle Bag: A large bag (or pair of bags) hung over a saddle. Many designers use saddle bag as an inspiration for their designs. Therefore, their bags are called saddle bags, even though they are not actually saddle bag.
16. Shoulder strap Bag: This is perhaps the most common type carried by women today. This type consists of a single or double strap that goes over the shoulders. This type comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. This bag is very versatile and goes with all casual and semi-formal clothes. The oversized shoulder bag teamed with jeans adds a touch of class.
Sling Bag: A small bag with a long strap, similar to a messenger bag but much smaller.
Trapezoid: Shaped as a trapezoid, usually made of stiff material.
17. Tote Bag: A medium to large bag with two straps. Sometimes sold as a reusable shopping bag, this bag can carry anything that is too large for a common handbag – also called a ‘Shopper’. They also encourage green living as they eliminate the need for plastic bags when buying small items. Totes are oversized bags usually made of cloth or other soft material. These bags are perfect for traveling, running errands, grocery shopping etc. Carrying this bag while grocery shopping is not just a style statement but also an environment friendly option to reduce plastic.
Weekend Bag: A bag of a size to carry clothing and personal articles for a weekend trip.
18. Wristlet: A clutch shaped bag that comes with a leather or bracelet-looking strap allowing you to use your hands freely. a clutch shaped bag that comes with an attached leather or bracelet-looking strap allowing you to hold your bag and dance freely.
