Why do this? In order to wonder — what are effective ways of designing the future? Design fiction is making things that tell stories. It's like science-fiction in that the stories bring into focus certain matters-of-concern, such as how life is lived, questioning how technology is used and its implications, its ability to speculate about the course of events; all of the unique abilities of science fiction to incite imagination-filling conversations about possible habitable, life-affirming future worlds. Flying kites and balloons for aerial photography engages people in ways often not considered, as the Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science (PublicLab.org) demonstrates. As an ideal, Publicly Initiated Scientific Research (PIScR) is a way we engage in research creating new ways of knowing and understanding, of exploring and doing, of tapping into our potential and of giving rise to unheard voices. As Gertz and Justo argue in their book "Env. monitoring with Arduino": understanding brings knowledge and with knowledge comes the power to make decisions that can change our lives for the better - from holding polluters accountable, campaigning to lower electricity and gas bills, to getting to know ourselves again for the first time! Our role is to untap the potential of people to address issues that are important to them; to acknowledge and push for a belief in people - in their abilities, their skills, their passions, their knowledges; which at the moment is highly undervalued and underestimated. Play is a key component in our work at Citizens Without Borders: engaging with individuals and groups through play it is not only the way we learn but it also builds memories and experiences harnessed in enjoyment for doing something close at heart; it makes us feel a part of something greater. When engaging with DIY technologies and engaging in DIY research there is a very powerful element at work - there is genuine joy when learning that you are able to do, sense, or create something you did not think you could, especially, when you have made the invisible visible with your own hands. Playfulness embodies a sense of "involvement and detachment, self-expression and self-transcendence, individuality and cooperation" (Gwen Gordon, 2013). Boundaries become fluid, defences dissolve and give way to spontaneity. I believe that it is in this context and with this attitude that exploration and experimentation for discovery in publicly initiated scientific research can be kindled. It is important to continue giving impetus to this by creating playspaces because many people are already taking initiative in solving their own problems, they are ingenious and resourceful, imaginative and creative - and they know the power that knowledge can bring.

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems. You can learn how handle your issue about standard libraries.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.

Firstly, by harnessing DynamoDB global tables, we ensured global service availability and data replication across regions, boosting performance and disaster recovery. Next, we'll explore how we seamlessly integrated real-time updates into the app using Appsync subscriptions, making the experience dynamic and engaging for users. Finally, I'll discuss how provisioned concurrency not only improved performance but also kept costs in check, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of serverless architectures. Through these strategies and the inherent scalability of serverless technology, our application effortlessly handled massive user loads without manual intervention. This session is a real world example to the power and efficiency of modern cloud-based solutions in enabling seamless scalability and robust performance with Serverless
