Some movies and
TV shows that show
mental illness…
#Movies4MentalHealth
split
Euphoria
Ozark series on Netflix - Ben's character Bi-Polar
ginny and goergia
Crazy ex- girlfriend
Yes beautiful mind great story!
16. #Movies4MentalHealth
Characters with
mental illness are
portrayed as…
#Movies4MentalHealth
crazy
bee and puppycat anxiety
Up and down
over the top
Bens character in Ozark was spot on with the depiction of bi-polar disorder
I've been trash-watching Law & Order SVU, often the mentally ill are the suspect,
criminals
and how it affected the family
out-cast
bipolar/having mixed personalities
co-dependency

MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk
about and explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental
health" within your own cultural communities?
we don't speak about it
I grew up Jehovah's Witness, and pursuing any mental health assistant was
discouraged
we dont talk about it, we dont validate those with mental illness
it doesnt exist we just need to stop being sensitive
Mental health is portrayed as, I speak with this with my mother, and we are
open, so my cousin suffers from borderline-personality disorder...etc
in my husband's family, however, we are talking about it now because our
niece has been diagnosed with schizophrenia
it's looked down upon as we are expected to only turn to the church and no
doctors.
it's hard to know what to do...very taxing on the family
Yes i believe it is called toxic positivity...where we are feeling like we are being

21. #Movies4MentalHealth
How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
shameful
like a weighted blanket
stigma is a big problem for all of them, guilt and shame
Stigma it seems in the film feels like they are being shut out of how they are truly
feeling
isolating
here's fear of the unknown
No problem, and I think it is frustrating especially during the pandemic
n the blak community, it's very passive aggressive. We shouldn't be feeling things,or
we can't because it's something we should be able to get over and when we don't we
don't know what to do or why we feel like it.
uncertainty
sort of like a guilt trip
22. #Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Embarrassed
fear
Staying consistent with getting help
That someone may not understand or will make fun of it....
not knowing how to get help, how to find resources, or not finding the right
resources
feeling scared
[Stigma
judge
not being taken seriously
yes judge or being judged
I feel like sometimes people want to help fix me right away, but oftentimes I
just want to be heard and understood.
criticized

Wow this one's my favorite!!
the music and words are powerful
that was so well made
powerfully written strong personalities absolutely enjoyed it, almost made me tearful when he
said: "Come Home."
I think it is fascinating learning about the history especially images/videos from the 1930s and
so forth!
powerful
made me think about Racial Battle Fatigue
es!!! me too, the traditions
mental health and psychology have come so far, to consider runaway slaves mentally ill for not
wanting to remain in bondage is crazy to me
Yeah it was not deserved
27. #Movies4MentalHealth
What are some practices
that help support
your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
setting boundaries
As a former anorexic, Cooking healthy food for myself and my partner is cathartic
and healing
art episodes
Going are walks hiking. Alot of self-care
what helps me is facing the situation/experience - and organizing it in to what is real
and what comes from lies
Yes practicing boundaries and knowing who are the real ones in my life and working
out is a super power, almost healing
drawing and journaling helps with my wellness
seeing a therapist from church helps a lot...who can give me advice from a
Christian-based perspective

They're so brave
I can imagine my mom being like them when she came here to California
LOVE!!!
10/10
yes! love this
favorite one!
o sweet
microaggressions!
Awwwe I love how this coincides with racism and friendship towards the
end, looks like no on wanted to help them, as if they are aliens
the trope of an old white person dismissing a woman of color
Is there a longer film for this, or any other films from this artist? Also, Ms.
Soo passed away?
I think it teaches humility and consideration
I think both felt homesick because of it being a new world for them,
everyone else were being pricks to them,, pardon my french haha, but
looks like it's a true story I love that!
Being the only non-white person in the room
33. #Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support
ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
understand our differences
Yes I'm a mutt, so i don't believe in racism, we all live under the same planet, so i
believe in being supportive and lend a helping hand and reaching out when
possible :)
Putting ourselves in other's shoes and looking our for others' interests
Amen being understanding and open-minded, as well, as flexibility
knowing that everyone has their own experience and undertsanding that
because of that, we have different opinions on certain things
unfortunately history repeats
Being a voice for those who don't have a voice
Right on!
Truly listening is priceless. That's why we have 2 ears and 1 mouth =)
